If Trump offered you £1 million to vote for your country to become part of US, would you?

This is hypothetically one of the options available to Greenlanders.

We're Scottish. I say no, DH says take the money and move.

Trump is a rabid cesspit of a human being and I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire. I certainly wouldn't sell my country out to him.

Wow - it’s a massive - and very good - question TBH @Mochudubh. My initial thought was “yup, gimme the money” but the more I think about it, the greater the moral dilemma. If this could be bought where would it all end? What else might be asked of us.

I feel awful that I could be tempted and be so fickle but my thinking was that the massive amount of money would mean my family and I could distance ourselves from the impact of the worst outcome, because the money would give us greater opportunities, but that’s so selfish and in real life I’m not a “I’m alright, fuck everyone else” person.

Pretty glad I’ll never have to make that choice!

Greenland is a small (head count) country with a very high abundance of natural resources. Going independent isn’t a question - they’ll be picked off by USA/China/Russia. The question is who they select as their protector (if they don’t stick with Denmark)!

What if there were a referendum and the Greenlandic people said they wanted to join the USA? They have the right to self-determination, no? Just like the Brits decided to leave the EU— their choice to do so even though it was a dumb decision and they’re suffering economically from having done so.

For the UK, that would be about £67Trillion. For context the entirety of the national debt is under £3 Trillion. So if it went to the government and then was distributed, that would pay off the national debt, give enough cash to fix literally every broken road/hospital/school etc, probably to cut taxes by a good chunk as we could have a massive national wealth fund and then still give every individual half a million quid.

Just back of the envelope:

3 Trillion - National Debt
New hospitals, schools etc - NHS capex was about £14Bn. So I can't see it would cost more than another £3-5 Trillion to sort everything out.

That would leave £60 Trillion. In my imaginary scenario, I want £34 Trillion left to give everyone half a million quid. So £26 Trillion left for the national wealth fund. At 2.5% draw down (very conservative) that would give £650Bn per year. Total UK tax revenue is about £1 Trillion so they could cut taxes by 50% and still have much higher revenue for day to day spending.

It would also bankrupt even the USA I think so not a scenario I anticipate is likely to come to pass.

Anyway, the long and short of it is that while I have absolutely no desire to join the USA, it is enough money that it would be with considering - but presumably it would have to be very carefully managed or you'd just end up with hideous inflation.

I really am about to go to bed but just had a quick look at the thread. I think this is the essence of my original question. If enough people accept Trump's bribes, is that democracy or not?

I love America and it would make visiting easier and I could always move so the money went further if the local economy adjusted.
