He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!

My daughter bought me a gorgeous cake tin for Christmas and so I filled it with stollen and other Christmas treats.

I came home from work earlier, made a cup of tea and went to get a piece of stollen and the tin was no where to be found. Husband came home and I asked him where was the tin - in the bin he said!!

Apparently he thought the tin was a tin that came with the stollen and once empty would go in the bin! So he’d bunged it into the bin where it’s git a bit dented and looks a bit shit as the lid is bent.

Hes remorseful but absolutely thinks that the tin was a single use item. What a fucking Idiot!

He has ordered me a new one as DD told him where she got it from as I was raging but who throws cake tins away!!

AIBU, is it really such an easy mistake to make????

I think it’s worse than he took the last bit of Christmas stollen when it was your gift!

RyanFudgingMurphy · 10/01/2026 12:59

I had to get rid of loads of tins when I moved house last year (recycling or gave them away) but I’m rebuilding! Christmas is a good source of tin collecting. I especially like French and Italian ones 😍

TwoSaturdays · 10/01/2026 12:35

I have kept a musical M & S Christmas box (sadly not a tin) which we refill with chocolates made in moulds. (Shout out for M & S caramel, shortbread and chocolate crispies milk chocolate.) The tune gives away anyone sneaking a choc as @Vroomfondleswaistcoat says and always makes us laugh. We’ve had hours of fun with young children moulding the chocolates then poring over the illustrations to determine the time of day, the time of year, the animals and activities depicted. Love it!

WhineAndWine1 · 10/01/2026 12:33

Weird that he wouldn’t just ask if this is for keeping or for the bin (yes recycling police I mean the bin 🙄)

Yes these musical rotating Fortnum’s tins are the bees knees. Biscuit and tin are a double pleasure.

Lidl do them at Christmas too!

drspouse · 10/01/2026 11:14

I bought a Fortnum and Mason biscuit tin and DH did the same (you can even get refills which was my plan!)

I have a MUSICAL Fortnums biscuit tin that one of my DDs gave me for my birthday. I have disabled the musical bit because it was a dead giveaway when I just wanted to sneak a quick custard cream - the damn thing would chime out Happy Birthday To You so the whole house would know what I was up to.

It can't do it now.

And this year, I bought baskets to put round the tree with my (adult) kids Christmas presents in - one basket per couple and the basket was part of the gift. It looked lovely. I miss those baskets.

This really made me laugh. We need the laughing emoji back. Thanks for the lolz.

Tins matter!

😂😂😂

Pandasarethebest · 10/01/2026 10:46

Sometimes I buy things just for the tins!

LeftieRightsHoarder · 10/01/2026 10:37

I love my tins too. If I’ve been given a plastic ‘tin’ of biscuits I take it to a charity shop when I’ve filled it with small items. But proper tin tins I can always find an excuse for keeping.

TwoSaturdays · 10/01/2026 10:31

Thank you for posting a pic of your tin @SparklyGlitterballs. It’s beautiful. ❤️

Theresalittlebitofwitchinyou · 10/01/2026 10:26

90% of my tins the contents were given away I just wanted the tin!

SparklyGlitterballs · 10/01/2026 10:25

I want to see more of your fancy tins. This is one I've kept over the years. The lid has a dent now, but I like it too much to throw it away.

I have a tin or two, notably a heart shaped one with brightly coloured buttons on it. I use it for my staples stash at school. Another rectangular ’biscuterie’ tin has my reward stamps in it.

I’ve finally emptied some Kilner jars which had sloe gin/flavoured vodkas that didn’t all fit in a standard bottle. I’m moving this year and I’m hoping to have a shelf in the kitchen where I can display them, full of flour/coffee etc. Mum has a very old, huge sweet jar full of buttons that I covet. It’s been used for ’Guess how many are in the jar’ for various school fetes.

moonlitmeadow · 10/01/2026 10:09

Dh threw my vintage (looking) teabag tin away that I brought back from holiday because he’d used the last teabag from it. 😢

brightnails · 10/01/2026 10:08

work threw away my nice cake tin which they had recently given me with cake in it, then didn’t replace it 🤬

ninanest · 10/01/2026 10:03

YABU. He made a mistake, apologised and made up for it. Sounds like he's quite a nice husband. I can see it's irritating, yes but hardly rage worthy.

soupyspoon · 10/01/2026 10:02

UncannyFanny · 10/01/2026 09:04

Well obviously no woman has ever thrown something in a bin that a man wanted to keep. Ever.

Im going to do exactly that today

And it wont be an accident

And I wont be replacing it.

BlackCat14 · 10/01/2026 09:56

This is a daft thing for him to do, and it seems he really battered it before putting it in the bin for it to be so damaged!
However, he’s accepted fault and ordered you a new one, so I really wouldn’t be that bothered.

rainbowstardrops · 10/01/2026 09:33

So did he finish off the stollen as well?
He was an idiot but at least he’s ordered you some more.

mamaduckbone · 10/01/2026 09:23

Yes, idiotic, agreed!
Side question - where were said beautiful cake tins from? I need some new ones and want beautiful quality. My mum bought me my last set and she always buys cheap so they have rusted and dented.

YANBU I love a nice tin. Or box. And don't get me started on baskets. I am not allowed to get any more baskets.

I have a basket weakness. But tbf to me, I keep buying them in the hope that one can become a lovely breadbasket with a snowy linen cloth in it, keeping freshly baked rolls warm. Instead they all get filled with vitamins and medicine or rolls of flannels or tat that needs people to come and find it and put it away. I still need a bread basket.
