Long story short - went in for c section on the 7th, all successful and baby fine, I was fine. on the 8th I was prescribed a very strong ibruprofen suppository, and then given another strong ibruprofen tablet around an hour later when the space in between Both
of these things should have been 12 hours. I started to vomit and felt dizzy and very nauseas when it happened (at this point didn’t realise what had actually happened - just thought they were giving me the prescribed doses) and did wonder why I started to feel unwell.

responsible midwife came to my bedside around 8 hours later and profusely apologised and admitted to what she had done.

I sat there and I was in shock and just accepted he apologies.

now I’ve actually let it sink in… this could have been a lot worse and could have been my newborn or another baby it happened to.

I also googled symptoms and, and it could be fatal, but I appear to have gotten off lightly with some minor sickness and nausea and dizziness.

I have huge medical anxiety anyway but this has tipped me over the edge.

patient experience nurse came round this morning, and just on her general rounds
and I explained to her what happened and she was just as shocked and doesn’t understand how it happened and has let me log an official complaint!

shall I make a claim or leave it alone?

Thanks

We seem to live in a World where so many want compensation. What do you think would happen to the midwife? She apologised and you are OK.
I think it’s sad you are even thinking about it.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 09/01/2026 14:32

There isn’t anything to claim for here. Put in a complaint with PALs if you feel it will help, but you’ve no chance of a claim for medical negligence.

Henbags · 09/01/2026 14:31

By all means, “complain”, but I doubt very much you can “claim” for this.

As a PP said, the team will Datix this and it should hopefully be dealt with internally.

I wouldn't make a claim, if you mean compensation. The mistake needed reporting so they can ensure it never happens again, and a sincere apology.

This. Ask to see your medical records and I would email PALS to say this is what happened and the effects but you believe you got off lightly but were still ill.

WTF is this world coming to.
Just had a baby via c section your both (assumably) healthy and recovering well. You should be in a baby bubble and not thinking about claiming against the trust who has safely delivered your baby.

Yes it could have been worse and yes it shouldn't have happened but clearly she felt terrible about it and it will have been documented and no doubt she will face action from the trust. Why claim for that against the NHS who are already in dire needs.

Concretejungle1 · 09/01/2026 14:28

I'm bit confused sue for what, Nothing has happened to you, injury wise? Yes complain, You definitely shouldn’t have been given them in short amount of time but it seems weren't given more than a fatal dose. ( then i’m not medical).
i’d expect an apology and to see how it wouldn’t happen again. Im guessing this may be causing anxiety as you’ve just given birth, speak to the staff for reassurance that you are fine. Enjoy your little one. Ask for reassurance how the staff can endure this won’t happen again.

They made a mistake
The lady responsible apologised
No harm done
Now you want money from the NHS that needs every penny it can get
Vile

ladyofshertonabbas · 09/01/2026 14:17

I would probably log it, but not pursue money. But do make sure any symptoms you felt are logged.

LIZS · 09/01/2026 14:17

A complaint means an investigation as a Patient Safety Incident. It sounds as if the responsible midwife spoke to you under the Duty of Candour, notifying you of an error. What do you hope to achieve as an outcome? You presumably have had no serious consequences as it was fortunately picked up quickly and your symptoms may have not been directly linked. The hcp who administered the second dose may receive further training and the learning shared across the unit. It is unlikely you would get any payout though.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 09/01/2026 14:17

What do you think you can claim for here?

Definitely complain - you need to be sure that it down happen to anyone else.

Sue: different story really. As first response said, can you quantify what you hope to gain?

You can still make a formal complaint without suing, which I most definitely would do.

Baguetteandcheese · 09/01/2026 14:14

Negligence for what exactly?

How do you know for sure your nausea and vomiting was because of this? Did you exceed the dose recommended in 24 hours? How strong is ‘strong’.

They should have reported it using the Datix system and this would have been followed up with the staff involved as you got an apology, which is part of it.
It shouldn’t have happened obviously, but what are you claiming for? Nothing happened.

Indianajet · 09/01/2026 14:14

Bargepole45 · 09/01/2026 14:14

I am struggling to understand why you think you should receive compensation? What exactly are you being compensated for? What loss have you incurred?

By all means make an official complaint though.

Denbyregency · 09/01/2026 14:12

What’s your quantifiable loss?

What harm did it cause you?

is it in your records that you were given the wrong dosage and are the symptoms you experienced recorded in your notes?
