Military conscription

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 09/01/2026 10:25

There is lots of talk about if ww3 happens then military conscription will happen

This is basically people who sit in an office safely saying we need to either send ourselves or out children to fight and die in horrible conditions

Am I unreasonable to think that anyone who thinks this is a good idea

They should be the first ones to sign up and to lead by example

Any politicians who think this is a good idea, there children should be the first to go

Russia is literally sending troops in wheel chairs and crunches to the front line

So age, disability and gender will not be a problem for anyone who supports any conscription policy's, they can go first

Also the UK will not be invaded, we are not Ukrainian, If we were more like Ukraine I would be more in favour of this as the country itself is under threat

I’ve said the opposite of that. Ie that you and others need to be aware there is no guarantee so if troops are sent to Ukraine it could end in direct conflict with Russia.

Hopefully you will be briefing Parliament if it comes to a vote. The prospect of a peace deal is still pretty remote, sadly.

EasternStandard · 11/01/2026 18:28

AnnasFangs · 11/01/2026 18:24

Well if you want cast iron guarantees where war and conflicts are concerned you are bang out of luck! If only that were the case.

I wondered how you ended up on the other thread given your posts on this one.

Of course you can’t get a cast iron guarantee, that’s the issue.

Soldiering and policing are not really compatible. Ask anyone who served in Northern Ireland.

True.

SerendipityJane · 11/01/2026 18:18

AnnasFangs · 11/01/2026 18:16

Exactly. The argument seems to be we should only provide peace-keeping forces if there is a cast iron guarantee that a ceasefire will hold?

And before anyone starts, peace-keeping forces won't involve conscription. The forces who do the job will have already signed up for the job.

Well there's no point doing anything if it doesn't go as planned then. May as well give up.

It’s not a contentious point. If you listen to anyone on this speaking on behalf of the military they’ll say the same.

Ik you want others to go, I’m with the op those who seem keen as you do feel free. And no it doesn’t matter about age and ability, it’s all the same in the end.

There’s no point in being there if you can’t back it up should the ceasefire fail.

One of the 3 you are referencing is already in the armed forces, so is already signed up to fight...

The UK has taken place in ceasefire operations many times in the past 50 years.

Admittedly it hasn't always been invited. But it's something that is part of regular training.

The issue that could happen is Starmer wanting troops in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. We’re there and that breaks, we’re in conflict with Russia then.

It can’t be some posturing photo op ‘boots on the ground’ shite. If we’re there and conflict starts, we’re in it.

I hope all the people who are for this

They and there families will be first to sign up

I think it's easy to say that we should do this as everyone always has an excuse why it should not be them

It's easy to assume it will be someone's else family and children who will go first and they will get to continue their lives as normal

But gender, age and any other reason should not be an excuse

If you think this is a good idea, you should go first

Its either " signing up" or "conscription" they arent the same thing. which are you talking about?

In the event of a war there actually will be a lot of people who will put themselves forward. They will want to defend their homes, kids and lives because that will be their instinct. The same instinct that makes you opposed to it.

It could be your children or ours but if they are adults "signing up" is a free choice.

If it is conscription we are all in the same boat so there is no "going first"

In what world is he a warmongerer? He can't stand up to his own mps, let alone an enemy aggressor. His whole thing on the world stage is appeasing Trump, if in doubt give him another state visit.

I'd say he is neither.

I don't think it's the fact they are pampered

The military lifestyle is something you need to want to do

If you don't want to be there then it will probably just be a drain on everyone else

Just like everything else in life

You need to want to do it

Exactly my point. The " forced" people are a waste of resources really

GaIadriel · 11/01/2026 17:13

We don't have a population who would be up for a fight any more. We have a tiny professional army, and lets face it most of the population are so fat and lazy they would be just too easy targets. The US won't step in and save up again. We will just be Russian at some point. Schools ought to start teaching Russian so that we are more to be prepared.

Even without the US there's no way Russia is taking out NATO. Remember that training exercise where a £100m Swedish ultra quiet sub defeated a whole US carrier group and 'sank' the £6bn US Ronald Reagan undetected (sent a picture of it in the crosshairs basically showing they could've blasted it).

Repeated drills had the Gotland sub repeatedly penetrating the Reagen's defences (anti-sub aircraft, ships, and submarines) and sinking it - the Reagen alone being 60x the value of the Gotland. Following this the US had egg on their faces and requested to borrow the Gotland for two years to study it.

https://jobs.army.mod.uk/how-to-join/can-i-apply/age/

I'm 50+ which definitely puts me outside of their recruitment.

If conscription comes and this changes then it's a different kettle of fish.

Changing it so older posters who are keen can do it sounds like a good way to get the whole electorate behind it or not.

Rather than some thinking yeh the young people who haven’t had as much life can do it instead.

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 11/01/2026 17:05

Thechaseison71 · 11/01/2026 08:06

I'm for it and a good few of my family are or have been in the forces. Although it would be a pain training pampered youngsters who are made to be there

Obviously. But why would be do that if, as I wrote he will never introduce conscription? He will always choose appeasement.

Of course "he" may not always be PM.

Chamberlain (much maligned as an appeaser) was ousted in 1940 and we got Churchill who was a little less keen on appeasement than history has recorded.

And conscription can't be introduced without the agreement of Parliament. So the only thing Starmer can agree to is a bill being laid.

If you actually understood what the provisions of the ECHR were you would know that plenty of signatories to it also have compulsory military service.

It's axiomatic that anyone who uses the phrase "human rights lawyers" knows very little about human rights.

We have such a british centric island view of this which would changed instantly if we were about to be invaded

We are an island. We can't help it.

Well we can. But that needs effort.

Parliament isn't going to introduce conscription without the agreement of the Prime Minister. What a ridiculous thing to post.
