Military conscription

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 09/01/2026 10:25

There is lots of talk about if ww3 happens then military conscription will happen

This is basically people who sit in an office safely saying we need to either send ourselves or out children to fight and die in horrible conditions

Am I unreasonable to think that anyone who thinks this is a good idea

They should be the first ones to sign up and to lead by example

Any politicians who think this is a good idea, there children should be the first to go

Russia is literally sending troops in wheel chairs and crunches to the front line

So age, disability and gender will not be a problem for anyone who supports any conscription policy's, they can go first

Also the UK will not be invaded, we are not Ukrainian, If we were more like Ukraine I would be more in favour of this as the country itself is under threat

It is no good saying whether or not your loved ones would go. If the worse would happen and the country was going to be invaded by enemy forces, there simply is no choice..

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 09/01/2026 11:25

I hope all the people who are for this

They and there families will be first to sign up

I think it's easy to say that we should do this as everyone always has an excuse why it should not be them

It's easy to assume it will be someone's else family and children who will go first and they will get to continue their lives as normal

But gender, age and any other reason should not be an excuse

If you think this is a good idea, you should go first

Do know what can happen to people when their country gets invaded? You and your family can't avoid the violence if that happens. It wouldn't just be Keir Starmer getting replaced by someone speaking in a foreign language.

GaIadriel · 22/01/2026 05:55

I agree that our treatment of veterans is shameful (partly because the public don't really seem to care about men's issues as much) but we wouldn't be fighting for our government. We'd be fighting to protect ourselves. It's not like Keir Starmer is going to go and kick their arses for us!

The Ukrainians have been equipped to an increasing degree with current generation weapons for use on the battlefield (e.g. NLAW, up to date modern self propelled guns and battlefield missiles - Atacams, etc) aprons and are still receiving financial support...they aren't fighting with sticks and stones.

The Russians are using their best available equipment and soaking up massive casualty numbers....it's all turned into an old fashioned slog and a numbers game.

Yes in a NATO context NATO air would (hopefully) make a difference but if you want a template for a 21st century landware then Russia/Ukraine is it..you need armies.

Problem is maintaining a standing army if any size is very expensive.

In recent years Europe/UK governments have been increasingly unwilling or unable to spend on defence and so to stop public disquiet to some extent have been quite happy to go along with the idea that it can all be done by cyber/drone/bit of air power at a push...frankly that's delusional, but it goes down well with those that don't agree with defence spending or think their kids could be called up to fly drones from the safety of their bedrooms.

Yes, UK army bosses have been clear that if UK were invaded we would need conscription and drones are not sufficient, ad they clearly are not sufficient in Ukraine or anywhere else.

When there is a war either you stick out your chin and fight for your country or you are a problem to your country - although in WWI I think the conscientious objectors actually found a very elegant solution in which they helped humans not the war.

However, I see that Macron’s recruitment of volunteers was oversubscribed on the first day, so maybe the French will stand between us and The Worst. Vive la revolution ahem.

WW2 also had conscientious objectors. My grandmother remembers meeting a 'conchie' when she an evacuee. Yes, they had to do jobs to help.

There would still be that option now they said but you would have to convince a tribunal.

Women couldn't vote in World War 1. The world moves on.......

Women weren't in combat in WW2 either.

Women serve in combat now so this is different.

PollyBell · 22/01/2026 04:57

With all the 'school mum', play date, birthday party angst, they unfriended on social media, left me on read but haven't replied, can you imagine if people were conscripted?

Milothebunny · 22/01/2026 04:37

AmIthatSpringy · 09/01/2026 12:17

How do they treat them?

Is that a serious question?

They leave our veterans to freeze to death on the streets and instead put illegal boat men in hotels & provide food. They deny our veterans housing but yet make illegal boat mens housing a priority. They don't provide aftercare or support to our veterans, as a result many are left to fight their demons alone which often results in addiction problems and many taking their own life. In some parts of the country they even failed to honour our veterans on remembrance Sunday last year finding ridiculous excuses.

Our veterans gave everything to this country and receive nothing in return. The country is a disgrace when it comes to how veterans are treated!!

No we can't..but I think everyone now should look at the situation and assess if they want to and are able to move to a country less likely to be directly involved in a conflict with Russia (and not seriously unstable in other ways). New Zealand is one, Uruguay another.

Edited

Thankfully 80% of people in my country don't think that way, and are instead willing to defend my country, otherwise life would be intolerable for all but the lucky few able to immigrate to somewhere like New Zealand.

Germany invading its neighbours does not make a world war. If one country invading another made a world war, the planet would have been in a constant state of world war since time immemorial, right up to the present day.

Britain could not have joined WW2 late because there no world war already ongoing to join when it (and France) declared war on Germany in 1939.

Hitler's plan was to take over Europe. If Britain hadn't declared war, that would probably have happened if he'd been successful at taking over the other countries.

Or immigration before it reaches this stage. Would need to be planned well in advance.

Men either needed to own property/be wealthy or undertake military service to get the vote. So arguably a lot of men had to sacrifice more to get it - PTSD, life changing injuries, etc.

If I'm not mistaken the suffragettes only wanted the vote for women who owned property so most women wouldn't have qualified.

The suffragettes weren't a monolithic group..people like Sylvia Pankhurst did campaign for working class women to have it too. Working class women like Dora Thewlis (mill girl arrested at 16 years old) agitated for it on their own behalf.

Natsku · 09/01/2026 18:53

The way I look at it, is what is the alternative? The alternative isn't being left alone by the aggressor because we don't have enough people to fight, its violence, rape, torture, repression, and mass misery. I don't want that for me or my children so fighting is the only viable option.

Or immigration before it reaches this stage. Would need to be planned well in advance.

I thought they made them president.

Multi millionaires usually find a way of getting what they want/influencing people. But you can be sure that if only women had to sign up to the draft and men got the same privileges for free all hell would break loose!

Dealing with mansplainers is one thing but having to agree to be used as cannon fodder at your country's whim is completely another! I'd be shitting it with Trump in charge were I a young US male

And this is the current American system which has been in place for many years...

Registration for Men

Selective Service System registration is required by law. By registering, a young man remains eligible for jobs, state-based student aid and employment in most states, Federally-funded job training, and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.

In a national emergency, Selective Service System will use the registry to provide personnel to the Department of War.

Penalties for Failing to Register

If required to register, failure to register is a felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or 5 years imprisonment. Also, a person who knowingly counsels, aids, or abets another to fail to comply with the registration requirement is subject to the same penalties.

But that doesn't apply if you have bone spurs.

I think from the UK perspective, it's not a great optic for people who have fuck all military experience to go around telling other people they have to do it.

Women back then not having the vote would be a fair point to not doing military conscription

It's something I did not think about

If women back then were not able to fully participate in society

But equally this does not mean that the women giving out flowers to men to shame them will get forgiveness

Apparently the child free are third on the list. Last in line for social housing but third in line for this.

Oh sorry. Second in line

I'm sure feminists will be up in arms at the suggestion that women stay at home while the men get to play the hero. 👀

A large proportion of the men would have had no vote either. Only property-owning men over 21 could vote. The poor couldn't.

Supporting our European allies and fulfilling our mutual agreement isn't remotely similar to Iraq and Vietnam though. You can be sure that the people who don't want to fight would mostly still want other countries to help if we were in Ukraine's position and their children were on the frontline and British women were being raped/civilians murdered etc.

You’re right that people absolutely would want allies to help us if Britain were invaded.
There is a moral obligation baked into alliances, not just self-interest, and also that defending a democracy from invasion is morally different from discretionary wars.

However that still doesn’t get you conscription in the UK, because moral obligation doesn’t equal political consent for coercion.

Allies don’t expect conscription-based equality. NATO and European defence do not operate on symmetry of suffering. Britain’s role is understood to be high-end capabilities, intelligence, air, naval and cyber power, and logistics and training. Not mass infantry.
Ukraine does not expect Britain to draft civilians. It expects Britain to play its comparative advantage.

The uncomfortable truth is that if we believe the cause is just enough, maybe people should be compelled, but democracies have historically only accepted it when the threat is direct and cost of refusal is national destruction.

And that in turn takes us back to all the other reasons why Britain is not best defend by mass man-power, how conscription weakens military outcomes and spills out its own morallly-uncomfortable consequences.
