Military conscription

I'm 55 and I would go tomorrow to help out.

I am able to shoot, run a range to train and have soldiering skills.

We would send children, an 18yr old isn't a child.

This is basically people who sit in an office safely saying we need to either send ourselves or out children to fight and die in horrible conditions

Well, if WWIII breaks out with actual combat involved, who are you expecting to save us? Armies will need more recruits, voluntary or othewise.

Seems like in your scenario a stark choice between remaining seated in one’s cosy office and dying there OR potentially dying in combat. But either way in a WWIII situation, dying is a very high risk whatever the choice.

This in spades. There is an entire army arriving on a daily basis from across the channel. Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, languishing in hotels. There’s your conscripted army sorted.

As it happens I think a dose of national service would teach some independence and toughen them up and realise that being called a name on social media is not anxiety inducing

I hear you. I also see a pp say we would not be in untrained cannon fodder territory but trained specialists, maybe so although some wars really are depressingly and unconscionably about fodder.

There are many roles which aren't front line fighting.
In one of the similar threads people were writing about their grandmas being conscripted for post office services.

People saying you wouldn't fight for this government- governments are coming and going. Results of surrender often last decades.

The question is, do you value your lifestyle and values? Do you believe that there should be at least a part of the world where democracy and human rights mean something?
If the UK would decide to sit out a war in Europe, than the island of democracy and human rights would shrink around you.

If things go completely crazy then you wouldn’t be writing this, you would want to play your part. It’s easy to be a keyboard warrior when it’s hypothetical. They will not need untrained cannon fodder, war isn’t like that now, we aren’t Ukraine as you said but we may need cyber security specialists, logistical experts etc. my own dc is in the military, 4 years of training and counting, still not qualified, conscripts really aren’t much use today

Why should my children, husband, brothers etc go to fight in a war that psychotic old men have caused?

Most people just want to live in peace and are dragged into war by power hungry men who have about 10 years left to live.

Hopefully the regular folk of the world make a stand we out number the warmongers in our millions!

I think if there was compulsory consciption everyone and his dog would develop a 'mental health issue' which would prevent them from joining up. Plus the 'I have a neurodiversity so i can't fight' etc... Then anyone left would try their hardest to be a key worker in some form. Having lived through Covid I give up on the idea of community. People were so incredibly selfish in different ways.

My great grandparents had a 20ish yo son in 1939, they made him get a job (building trains?) That was on the "protected from conscription" list, very sensible.

My GDad ended up fighting but was a lot younger so only caught the last couple of years

I can't imagine anyone would willingly want to be conscripted.
But if your country and your family are under threat, surely most decent people would want to do all they can to protect themselves and their freedoms.
It's a different stress and energy when you are under direct attack.
It's called being patriotic which, sadly, is not much in evidence of lately. I don't understand why so many British people are not proud of being British and willing to praise, improve and protect their own lot and heritage. You are labelled as far right if you so much vocalise strong support of your own country's freedoms.
Add to this the very large number of illegal immigrants who would not be interested in doing anything and would probably look to move elsewhere.
I also imagine a large number of people currently with some sort of serious medical issues would not participate because they simply can't.
I'm not sure who would be left for a conscription campaign. Age and sex would also play a role in selecting conscripts.
Also, you simply cannot say I don't want to do it. It would be mandatory. To avoid conscription you'd either leave the country, declare and prove some sort of medical incapacitation or you follow the required legal penalty (which would not be light).

Not the case at all,life in 80pcnt of ukraine is as normal minus some occasional air raids but people are so used to them bot everyone goes into the shelters anymore (i have family members doing business there and long time friends). Nightclubs,restaurants,supermsrkets,shopping centres,mc donalds, etc are open as usual- check google maps m, even dental treatment british tourists are going there as usual. id never fight for this country or any country tbh - i only care about my own family and myself tbh and we as long as we are safe i literally dont care where we are once we are together - any hint of that happening we pack up and move somewhere else.

Most people are the same - at the end of the day you are out for yourself and your own family / kids! nothing else matters. going to the front line as an inexperienced soldier - youll just end up dead - then what the fuck happens your kids.

You can bet the fucking billionaires and powerful people in charge wont be going to fight and neither will their families! so its a big no from me.

my friend always refused to get her sons their Israeli citizenship even though she's from there and when they were around 16 she stopped bringing them there even to visit out of fear that they would be expected to do their military time - it's just not worth it

Army 2020 was even more of a joke because they quickly realised it was a fucking stupid plan when you’ve now not got the manpower to organise a village picnic let alone anything else…..and then started sending out letters to all the people who were within 5 years of discharge offering the world to come back 🫠😂
