Military conscription

To be anyone who prefers time at work than time with their family needs to reconsider their life choices.

I work with loads of people who don’t really want to be there - but they did once & that’s why they signed up. I think that’s completely different to actually conscripted people and far different to regular jobs that have 28 day notice periods.

Germany invading its neighbours does not make a world war. If one country invading another made a world war, the planet would have been in a constant state of world war since time immemorial, right up to the present day.

Britain could not have joined WW2 late because there no world war already ongoing to join when it (and France) declared war on Germany in 1939.

We don't have a population who would be up for a fight any more. We have a tiny professional army, and lets face it most of the population are so fat and lazy they would be just too easy targets. The US won't step in and save up again. We will just be Russian at some point. Schools ought to start teaching Russian so that we are more to be prepared.

Warfare today is very different. It will be mostly sitting in bunkers flying armed drones attacking civilians, remote controlling robot dogs with machine guns or exploding tanks. Or flying fighter jets or bombers.

Different to some degree but still highly risky..

In the Ukraine conflict Russian counter measures have forced many of the operators of small drones to operate from hides pretty much on the battlefield....which the Russians try and find and target with artillery or their own drones.

Flying fighters and ground attack aircraft is no guarantee of surviving...the loss rates on both sided has been high - as would be expected.

I'd certainly caution any thinking that there are safe roles or specialisations.....

Because the rich old men will bomb the shit out of you anyway, without resistance? A bomb doesn't care about your political views, it just kills you and flattens your home.

I'm for it and a good few of my family are or have been in the forces. Although it would be a pain training pampered youngsters who are made to be there

This doesn’t apply to Ukraine / Russia though. It’s millions who have been sadly used in this way.

I cannot sign up for conscription as I'm over 30 and they don't take anyone over 30 in my country, but I will happily be mobilised in whatever way is required of me. As I'm trained as an aircraft mechanic I would likely be mobilised into maintenance work - everyone should do what they can do best, and use what useful skills they have.

My partner will be mobilised, as will most men I know, who already served their time as conscripts and are now part of the roughly million strong reserve force that my country has wisely trained.

What would you do?

I'd be regarded as a liability for health reasons. If I could go to the front and make tea or do something in a military hospital where I wouldn't need to be supported by others (without being in the way), I believe I should serve. I simply wouldn't be physically able to do a lot of the standard soldiering. Maybe I could hide in a trench and fly drones. They're welcome to any skills that could be useful.

My father was in WWII as a teenager. He never said much about it. His uncle died in WWI. They weren't conscripted. They went over from Ireland.

Edit: I think conscription is necessary in some circumstances.

Conscription worries me as my 17 year old ds attempted to take his own life when he was 12. We were told afterwards that he would never be able to join the armed forces as a result (much to MIL's annoyance). I don't know what would happen to people like ds. Would he still have to go and fight or would he be given other war related work like in a factory or hospital.
