To wonder why the mainstream media is not reporting the massive anti-regime protests in Iran?

There are currently massive anti-Islamic regime protests all over Iran by civilians, many of them chanting for the return of the Shah.

These protestors are incredibly brave, many of them have been killed, shot or taken away by the regime police.

The protests, some of them hundreds of thousands strong, all over Iran have been widely reported and documented by exiled Iranians on places like Twitter/X but the mainstream news has been strangely silent, especially the BBC that would normally have non-stop, headline reporting if this was about happening anywhere else.

AIBU to hope the regime falls and that the Iranians finally taste freedom after 47 years (and that the BBC should be reporting on this)?

I’ve seen coverage for some days now, on multiple MSM channels.

It has been a big news week with the tangerine lunatic kidnapping the leader of another country and seizing ships on the high seas, his ICE goons killing a protester, plus extreme weather in the U.K. There have been many competing stories, but Iran is still very visible.

Pillypolly · 09/01/2026 07:44

It’s all over the news. It was on BBC news last night too.

Sparron · 09/01/2026 07:42

Its quite simple...

...it's a story about secular and moderate people against an authoritarian islamist regime. Obviously the Iranian people are hateful bigoted islamophobes, so its no wonder the media in this country doesn't want to cover it until its impossible to ignore.

Binus · 09/01/2026 07:12

Worth pointing out that the complaints about the BBC ignoring the protests began before the US removed Maduro.

Blarghism · 09/01/2026 07:11

If people click on the articles on it, they will post more. It's all about advertising revenue unfortunately.

Dagda · 09/01/2026 07:10

They are covering it everywhere. It’s just not top news.

Iran brutally represses journalists so it makes it more difficult to get material out. The regime has now implemented some kind of internet black out. The state controlled media isn’t showing that the protests exist: so it’s a very tricky environment.

Although I doubt that protests against the government would get large amounts of international press anyway. I know there has been deaths and arrests (which will be difficult to estimate) but these aren’t at the scale that it would take to shock the world really.

Top news seems to be Trump and Venezuela, then the ICE shooting.

Bringemout · 09/01/2026 07:08

It is also just really interesting from a human point of view, many Iranians are not religious at all, mosques have been closing due to non attendance. But I’ve also I’ve seen footage of women in chadoors protesting (always need to bear in mind that just because you are religious doesn’t mean you think young girls should be raped and beaten to death for uncovering their hair) so this isn’t just young secular people, not just about economics either, I’ve seen imams complaining that the regime has undermined islam with their actions. There are a lot of people on the streets for a lot of reasons. This is not just economics it’s years of latent anger. I saw some brilliant footage of an Iranian news reporter starting her broadcast with a song, it’s illegal for a woman to sing in public in Iran.

I think a free secular Iran would be an amazing place and I truly hope the Iranians will be able to set themselves free. I’m rooting for them. I imagine mossad is giving them a hand quietly.

Binus · 09/01/2026 07:03

They're doing some reporting now, but it's been over a week and there was very little at the start. So it's more than worth questioning why. PP is correct that the BBC had nobody on the ground in Gaza either, so it's not that.

Bringemout · 09/01/2026 06:59

notimagain · 09/01/2026 06:55

I suspect part of the problem might be a lack of reporters on the ground, no/little ability to get images out, etc, the sort of thing rolling news outlets rely on.

It's easy and cheap to stuff pages and fill air time with news about Trump or the goings on in Westminster..not so easy to do a live report from downtown Tehran, at least ATM.

There is loads of footage, same as Gaza, no reporters on the ground yet we had extensive coverage. Plenty of analysts to talk to about Iran as well.

This has been going on for something like 12 days, I’ve been following it for a while.

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/01/2026 06:57

I saw it on the TV news yesterday

Bringemout · 09/01/2026 06:57

Yeah I was surprised by how little coverage it got. I watched an interview on Andrew Marr with Tudgendhat and it was really obvious that Marr had no idea about Irans (Hezbollah drugs/weapons manufacturing) connections to Venezuela.

I think a lot of journalists themselves seem to not really understand the deal in Iran. If the Iranian regime falls there will be a massive reordering, they spend billions on Hezbollah, Houthis, Hamas, various iraqi militias every year. This is extremely significant, even if you don’t have any interest in Iranian people the impact of the regime collapsing should be of some interest to the global desk.

Personally I think a lot of news is dumbed down and a lot of reporters are incurious these days. Print media is still better tbh. Perhaps if the riots were led by drag queens then the bbc would muster up some enthusiasm for coverage.

They are.

I listen to news radio constantly. It’s being talked about on radio 4 and 5, and on the World Service (a lot), and LBC.

I’m really interested. I think for a lot of people though, UK news (the storm) and news from America (the shooting in Minnesota) is of greater interest.

I think that’s pretty much all the key MSM covered then, even GB News have it as the second story on their website.

So what was your point OP?

Agreed. They're not reporting much on it because people don't care. Proof being this thread was started at 7pm last night and has barely gotten 30 replies. Protests against the government is not exciting news, regardless of which country it takes place in.

Media websites always prioritise stories that get them the most clicks and ad revenue (exactly same reason why MN allows obviously fake or AI generated threads stay up for a while). Stories about Trump always get traction because he's a professional ragebaiting. Most places have an algorithm to organise their articles based on viewer interaction within minutes of it going up.

The most obvious answer is capitalism. It doesn't always have to be a conspiracy theory.

Dolamroth · 09/01/2026 06:29

It's also v prominent on their BBC Persian service

Twiglets1 · 09/01/2026 06:25

They haven’t given it very high priority up until now. But to be fair, this morning the BBC are reporting what is happening in Iran as their fifth news item. And the Telegraph are reporting on the widespread protests and government reaction of an internet blackout. A few protesters have been killed, unfortunately.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 08/01/2026 23:23

FatEndoftheWedge · 08/01/2026 20:13

@SpikeGilesSandwich but in islam it's said you are born islamic so surely it is a race ?

It’s a belief system, it’s not a race.
Unfortunately, it’s a belief system that is hostile to unbelievers which makes it a problem.

1apenny2apenny · 08/01/2026 22:21

LBC have been covering this, a lot from Iain Dale but also Ali Miraj and Sheila Fogherty.

nigelisalier · 08/01/2026 22:16

Mine looks different. But definitely there on the right.

Changingplace · 08/01/2026 22:09

canuckup · 08/01/2026 20:33

It's far down the BBC page. In small print

Obviously Trump, well, er, trumps all news

It really isn’t, it’s currently the 5th row down on the front page of the BBC app.

To wonder why the mainstream media is not reporting the massive anti-regime protests in Iran?

EmeraldRoulette · 08/01/2026 20:29

The only MSM I've seen reporting it are talking about it as if it's purely about the cost of living

The sky article looks as if it's doing the same thing

So I'm also wondering what's going on with MSM - I don't really use it so it's more idle curiosity.

lljkk · 08/01/2026 20:15

I've heard this news a lot starting about 5-7 days ago on CBS & BBC. I'd say yabvu.
