I said what I said, and my husband thinks it’s weird lol

There's a lot of heavy, awful stuff going on in the world at the moment. I saw this thread and thought That's more like it. I needed a bit of light relief. I also like to learn about which foods to avoid. I only eat beans if I know that I'm not going to be with my partner for a few days. That's out of respect for him

Zov · 08/01/2026 22:04

@NCbecauseIamadmittingIlikethesmellofmyfarts Yes, and it's been scientifically proven that people like the smell of their own farts. And it's normal to do so.

NCbecauseIamadmittingIlikethesmellofmyfarts · 08/01/2026 22:02

You want the truth, he whole truth and nothing but the truth?!

Fine.

Years ago, my husband told me he likes the smell of his farts (which are rank btw) and I said it was disgusting to which he replied that's it's not, it's just honest, everyone likes the smell of their own farts.

And you know what? I've never admitted it to another living breathing soul but he's absolutely right. I love the smell of my own farts and I love farting. The longer the better, the louder the better, the smellier the better. It's incredibly satisfying.

And what's more, when I sit down to a curry or a big Christmas dinner with a nice solid helping of sprouts, my main thoughts are the delicious food and the creativity and how grateful I am for a wonderful meal but at the back of my mind there's a little voice saying "the farts from this are going to be great, I'll look forward to them".

Never admitted it out loud. Never will. Never fart in front of people. And it's definitely not some weird fetish. But I do enjoy it and I truly believe so do most people in their own little way.

Your husband is a massive liar.

Oh my goodness you actually made me laugh with that Gif. My standards must be slipping.

Just don’t snap and fart.

UncannyFanny · 08/01/2026 21:54

Well being mine only ever smell like lavender I suppose yes, I do like the smell of them. Saves a fortune on air freshener.

LemonDrizzle10 · 08/01/2026 21:52

My chemo farts were something else! My chemo buddy suffered the same so we can definitely blame the meds!

My DD looks nervous when I eat asparagus; luckily for her there’s a short growing season. I love the stuff!

When I was in hospital a few years ago I didn't fancy a cooked meal so I ordered leek and potato soup with a roll.

The wind after eating that was pretty horrific but my saving grace was it was just after Covid lock down was lifted and the ward of 4 beds was empty apart from me so I was able to let them go with no embarrassment.

Thank goodness.

Processed onion here too! Chuck in some leeks in and my fluffs honk.

Fluff 🤣🤣

Zov · 08/01/2026 21:45

Very normal to not mind the smell of your own farts - and even enjoy it a bit.

Why you don't mind your own farts

  • Familiarity breeds comfort: Your body's microbiome produces a unique scent, and your brain recognizes it as "self," making it less threatening or repulsive.
  • Relief association: Smelling your own gas can be linked to the positive feeling of relieving bloating and pressure, a connection absent with others' farts.
  • Habituation: Your brain filters out constant sensory input, including your own natural body odors, preventing you from being overwhelmed

Evolutionary disgust: Humans evolved to find the smell of other people's bodily waste disgusting as a protective mechanism to avoid potential pathogens and disease.

"Otherness" factor: Unfamiliar smells from others' excretions signal potential danger or contamination, triggering a stronger negative reaction

I do find it funny though, when posters on Mumsnet claim they never fart in front of anyone/never fart in front of their partner. And some even claim they never fart!

I love a really rollicking good FART when I have had trapped wind for a few hours, and it finds its way out. Ahhhhhhhh, the relief! Grin

Alpacajigsaw · 08/01/2026 21:44

I know if I find my own vile they must be particularly bad. My lucky husband.

Just because I find fart humour boring and childish doesn't mean to say I don't have a sense of humour.
it just means I have a different sense of humour from you.

Lighten up.

I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t find them funny in certain situations.

We will need to agree to differ then.

Same here!

Processed onion for me - Baxter’s French onion soup, pot mash (back in the day) and sage and onion stuffing are a no no

Well i do realise they are a natural bodily function.
It's the finding them funny bit I don't understand. Or why people want to talk about them. They happen. End of story

Growlybear83 · 08/01/2026 21:16

There are regular farting threads on Mumsnet and there always seems to be a very big division between people like me who find farts funny and realise that they are a natural bodily function and others who appear to be disgusted and are insistent that everyone has enough warning of an impending emission to trot off to the toilet or garden to let rip 😆😆

DappledThings · 08/01/2026 21:20

Somewhere in W H Auden's travel memoir Letters from Iceland that I read during my degree he quotes an Icelandic proverb that "every man likes the smell of his own farts".

Now go ahead and call this thread childish 😂

I read the very beginning of the thread.
I made a comment.
And since then have merely been answering posters who have quoted my posts back to me.
I'm truly amazed at the number of posters who are so invested in the subject of farts. Who knew?

Why even open this thread then. Bore off 🥱

It may come as a shock to you but I can open any thread on MN that I want to open.
And, shock horror, actually post an opinion. Even if you don't like my opinion.

Have you ever thought how boring life would be if we all thought exactly the same as each other?
