We’ve got 30cm snow forecast. I’ve bought in some wood, coal and kindling and have got plenty of food in. I live on the top of a huge hill that becomes impassable with any snow. I’m quite looking forward to a few days in the house

InfoSecInTheCity · 08/01/2026 15:41

We’re under an amber warning but the actual forecast just says sleet and a bit of rain with pretty low level 15 mph winds so it will either be snowmageddon or a wet squib or anything in between here. We’ve always got full food cupboards, I always have powered banks charged because DD is crap at remembering to charge her phone and we’ll just stay in for a few days if needs be. Not really expecting much.

KimberleyClark · 08/01/2026 15:41

Not really. It’s pissing down here at the moment. Although snow is forecast for tonight I doubt it will stick. We rarely get substantial snowfalls here. Have bought a couple of 2 pinters and some bread and other basics just in case.

TheWytch · 08/01/2026 15:40

Not expecting any more than a bit of rain and possibly some wind here, so no special plans or precautions.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/01/2026 15:38

Yes i do realise that...

Well it seems you didn't.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/01/2026 15:40

cardibach · 08/01/2026 15:08

But you can appreciate that some people on MN might be? And that it’s on the south coast so your dismissive ‘I’ve seen worse’ is a bit out of place?

Of course. Apologies if I seemed dismissive, i was referring to where I am.

Laserwho · 08/01/2026 15:39

No trains will operate between Manchester and Sheffield from 6 pm tonight and all day tomorrow. No replacement buses will run either all due to the snow forecast. It might be worth checking out trains in your area.

MannersAreAll · 08/01/2026 15:38

People just don't know how to drive on snow any more - unless you're ancient like me!

I don't think the massive increase in automatic cars helps that either.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/01/2026 15:38

Laserwho · 08/01/2026 15:06

We don't all live on the South coast.

Yes i do realise that...

rainbowunicorn · 08/01/2026 15:38

God, the arseholes are out in force today.

Ridiculousradish · 08/01/2026 15:37

I live in West Cornwall and we've had a red alert for wind. Pretty used to wind and rain down here but this looks a bit scary. Schools shut at 1:30. Have got candles and gas stove out just in case.

ohtowinthelottery · 08/01/2026 15:36

@Alexandra2001Where i live, they're still gritting the same roads they always did, inspite of our Council being virtually bankrupt! People just don't understand how gritting works, nor it's limitations. And yet they rant on FB that nothings been gritted when it's not true (and noni don't work for the Council!)

People just don't know how to drive on snow any more - unless you're ancient like me!

I'm more than happy for the media to report the weather forecast - it's the frenzy being whipped up by the newspapers in response to the forecast that is unnecessary.

Leftsidefacing · 08/01/2026 15:35

We’ve four feet of snow weighing everything down outside. Its beautiful but….limiting. I’m hoping for rain.

FatLarrysBanned · 08/01/2026 15:35

Red alert here (Cornwall) Had message from DD's senior school earlier saying they wanted all pupils offsite by 3pm sharp, no afterschool/homework clubs.

We've just told anyone in the office who needs to get across the Tamar Bridge to leave now.

Powerbanks are charged, torches are ready and radio has batteries. Probably just have an early night and hope it's all blown over by the morning.

FrostyPalms · 08/01/2026 15:34

Well I don't live in the UK, so no. But I do live somewhere where we occasionally get very bad storms with the potential for flooding and power cuts, so when there's one of them coming then of course I, along with everyone else in my area, stock up on bottled water and non perishable food just in case, and make sure we have candles and that all our devices are charged. Most importantly, that we have plenty of wine and snacks.

MannersAreAll · 08/01/2026 15:34

WallaceinAnderland · 08/01/2026 15:27

The storm forecast is for high wind and rain, not snow.

Where I am the amber warning is for snow.

WallaceinAnderland · 08/01/2026 15:33

GalaxyJam · 08/01/2026 15:30

In my area, snow is forecast.

Just snow, or are you also getting high wind? I'm only going by the BBC report which says only SW, mostly Cornwall are on red alert and it's not for snow.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 08/01/2026 15:30

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 08/01/2026 14:33

Because I don’t have either of those things. And usually I would scroll on and ignore but posts like this are just so ridiculous. It’s posts like this that stay fuel shortages and toilet roll shortages.

Fuel and toilet roll shortages because she’s doing her shop a day early? Get a grip. There hasn’t been any scaremongering on this thread, it’s actually let a few people no there’s a warning in place. Which is useful considering it’s a red warning in some places.

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 08/01/2026 14:26

It’s getting people in a panic, by mentioning storm, and grocery shopping.

Do what you need to do too feel safe n any given situation but why come on to the internet and fuel panic.

No it isn’t “getting people in a panic”, it’s called inviting people to say whether they are likely to be affected by the storm and talk about it. Hurricane force winds are predicted for parts of the south west - aren’t people even allowed to mention a news story without being accused of scaremongering?

Goldfsh · 08/01/2026 15:30

Rosamutabilis · 08/01/2026 14:40

I'm right on the edge of a yellow snow warning area. It's pouring with rain and the forecast is for heavy rain all night even though we're technically in the warning area. It's no way cold enough for snow and the sky is rain sky not snow. I would like some snow but we don't get it very often, often have a winter with none at all.

Me too - it's so boring! I love some dramatic weather, but it's just WET and pretty warm. I'm sulking.

Just got back from Pets at Home as my very elderly Jack Russell (he’ll be 17 in the Spring) needed some more jumpers, but that’s all. He's now rocking a nice chunky grey number.

So rude not to post a picture of this handsome fella in his new jumper 😄

TreeDudette · 08/01/2026 15:30

We live in rural North Wales and often lose power due to bad weather so I checked we had enough coal and wood in for the fire and popped my battery powered lights on charge. Our standard "emergency" kit (that doubles as camping gear in the summer) consists of a camping gas stove, a few bottles of water and some long life milk so we'll survive a few days. Fridge is already full.

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 08/01/2026 14:21

Live my life and not scaremonger on the internet probably.

I truly hope you are right but we've got a rare red weather warning in the south west. Winds expect to be 90-110mph by the coast. I live very near the coast.

Oreosareawful · 08/01/2026 15:28

I’m in the amber warning area. I’ve asked a friend with a 4x4 if she can do my pony if I can’t get there.
I’ve told work I hope it hits us hard so I don’t have to go in tomorrow 😂 I did my big shop on Tuesday as usual, so no need to buy anything 👍🏻
