How did people cope with rain/snow/wind/ice before we had all these dire warnings and ridiculous hyperbole? We just got on with it - schools and offices open, no panic buying, no scaremongering. If you lived through the Great Storm of 1987, this is nothing.

1987 was a hurricane in October - hurricane's don't tend to trap people in their houses without power for a week like snow storms can.

Oh and 18 people died in that storm...

TommyAtkins · 08/01/2026 16:08

I’ve just popped into a hardware store to get some firelighters.

People were in there panic buying sledges. I I hope they’re not going to be disappointed though, as the weather forecast is predicting rain around here

For Christ's sake did the poster say that? No of course not, honestly....other posters have mentioned where they are so why not?

There are other areas too. This post shows whose understanding the weather and who isn't.

Only idiots go out in heavy weather conditions when they dont have too.
You are repeatedly told not to go out unless you have too.

Yes i do realise that...

I assume when you say South Coast you don't mean Cornwall given they are now under a red weather warning

Wintersgirl · 08/01/2026 15:54

Laserwho · 08/01/2026 15:06

We don't all live on the South coast.

My storm planning:

I have moved my car well away from neighbours wheelie bins (this is my usual pre-windyweather prep)

TreeDudette · 08/01/2026 15:51

WallaceinAnderland · 08/01/2026 15:27

The storm forecast is for high wind and rain, not snow.

Not in North Wales, our forecast is for heavy drifting snow. The snow from last weekend has only just melted here.

Leo800 · 08/01/2026 15:50

Schools have been shut early here & all trains cancelled tonight. We’ve just had an emergency alert through on our phones so it’s looking quite serious. Have got the candles out & everything charged in case of a power cut.

BoredZelda · 08/01/2026 15:50

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 08/01/2026 14:31

ook you do you. But I’m not the one panic buying because it might be a bit snowy.

I wonder if you are the same kind as people from Aberdeenshire who haven’t been able to get anywhere for the best part of a week, but despite there being an amber warning for snow last week are now complaining they have no food in and are blaming the council for not doing better to keep every single road open?

ThePerfectWeekend · 08/01/2026 15:49

We've had snow (4-5 inches) for a week. Does it only count if it happens down South? I'm on my way North Yorkshire to Liverpool and back shortly to drop DD at uni. I can't go earlier.
I keep checking the route and it looks OK. I'll book in somewhere if it's bad and always travel prepared.

TheWibble · 08/01/2026 15:49

I'm going to the supermarket on my way home tonight, to grab a basket of provisions. I'm not panic buying, but I usually do my food shop on a Friday evening as well, so I'm low on essential supplies. I'm leaving work a bit early to try and get home before the storm. I'll work from home tomorrow if the roads are bad.

NettleTea · 08/01/2026 15:48

my son is down in Falmouth at uni. Just sent him the warning.
His reply

RIP

JohnBullshit · 08/01/2026 15:47

Not expecting anything too dramatic here, but we're on the edge of an amber warning area and will almost certainly get a lot of rain, and it only takes a small difference in location or temperature for that to turn to snow. Don't have any particular preparations to make, really. The shopping is usually done by this time of the week, and it is.
I hope I haven't jinxed anything now and made my roof fall in under a ton of snow.

Pancakeflipper · 08/01/2026 15:47

Cancelled tonight's plans as it involved being very rural and coming home on country roads that won't see a gritter unless the tractors come out to play.

On Monday I stuck a loaf of bread in the freezer. Freezer is full of stuff and we have loo roll.

Teens are hoping for a day off school and there will be disappointment if no decent snow for sledging.

Cherrysoup · 08/01/2026 14:38

We're on the edge of where it may hit. My work has already sent a message saying we may be closed but please to try to get in despite adverse conditions (hmm, ok, but there'll be no kids to teach!)

I work in a school and volunteer for a charity.

The charity has sent out a national communication to staff and volunteers saying stay safe, don't attempt to drive anywhere, work from home etc etc.

School has sent out a message which equates to get your backside into work by any means possible. 🙄

HessianSack · 08/01/2026 15:46

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/01/2026 14:39

It's due to be wet and blustery on the south coast, nothing more. I've seen a lot worse forecasts!

Cornwall has a Red warning for wind, which is pretty rare

Ilikewinter · 08/01/2026 15:46

We seem to be on the cusp of rain and sleet - current weather app shows 100% heavy rain from 6pm tonight til 8pm tomorrow. I hope the snow stays away and I'll look forward to the roads flooding instead !

cardibach · 08/01/2026 15:46

WallaceinAnderland · 08/01/2026 15:27

The storm forecast is for high wind and rain, not snow.

Where you are, maybe. There are several snow warnings issued.

BoredZelda · 08/01/2026 15:46

I bought bread and milk. But that’s because we had none and would have bought it anyway.

BloominNora · 08/01/2026 15:46

We're rural Midlands, in a valley with steep hills the only way of getting out and right in the middle of the Amber warning.

Local weather nerds (who tend to be much more accurate than the national weather for specific areas) are saying there will be a lot of snow - between 15cm and 30cm depending on how high you are with the winds causing drifts. They are also clear that it still might only be rain if it doesn't drop cold enough.

The weather patterns they are seeing on the charts resemble the big snow dumps of 2010 and 2015 in this area. In 2010 local villages were snowed in for over a week without power.

I've made sure we have enough wood and coal for the fire for a few days, have got food in for the animals and have done a shop this morning to make sure we have enough fruit and snacks to keep the three bottomless teenagers going if we do end up snowed in. DDs college has already pre-emptively announced closure tomorrow as most kids travel in on the train and it is unlikely youngest girl child's school will open as the bus won't get through the lanes.

It's all very well people saying its scare mongering over a bit of snow and people need to not panic, I was the same when I lived in a town, could walk to the shop, and when we did have big snow events, it only disrupted us for a day. And I'm guessing the majority of people don't live in the Amber warning areas.

It's different when you live rurally and there is experience in relatively recent years of being snowed in or you are not rural but are reliant on transport, medication etc , you'd be utterly stupid not to be prepared when an Amber warning has been issued

Best case scenario is we get a few hours of rain and we don't need to go shopping this weekend. But in a worst case scenario, at least I know we'll be OK for a few days if we lose power and / or can't get out of our lane.

Crwysmam · 08/01/2026 15:45

We are prone to power cuts, overland supply, so I have candles at the ready, all phones charged and doing all the washing I can. I have done very little over Christmas so big pile has built. We may be in the dark but at least we’ll have clean underwear.
We are right in the middle of the amber warning area so Friday may be interesting. DH & I are both retired and DS is still home from uni. I’m going to super heat the house so if the power does go then it will be a couple of days before it gets cold ( modern well insulated house, our boiler broke this time last year and it was 3 days before it became unbearable).
The boiler is due to be serviced tomorrow, I suspect they will cancel if we get as much snow as forecast.

cardibach · 08/01/2026 15:45

MarjoramTea · 08/01/2026 15:26

It's a fab marketing technique, and most people 'obey' Grin

2 cm of snow and our entire train network collapses. It's embarrassing.

That’s some level of conspiracy thinking that you believe the Met Office issue warnings so Tesco can sell a few more loaves of bread. Why do so many people suddenly think everything is a conspiracy to make them obey? Arent they confident in their own decision making? Do they rely on being told what to do? Because that seems to be what they think others do.
The train thing is nonsense.

Friendlygingercat · 08/01/2026 15:45

I live in surbarban Manchester and there is rarely deep snow here. Well cant remember any in the last 20 years. I keep my freezer well stocked so if by any chance Tesco dont make it with my saturday shop I can manage for another week at
least. The only thing that wrries me a bit is that there are big trees in the business park behind the house so if any of them blow down lets hope its in another direction.

Illbethereinaminute · 08/01/2026 15:45

No, school have said they are hoping not to close but if they do my husband will take the day off and I will walk to work.

We have essentials like milk, bread and cheese and since I have no plans to do my weekly shop until Sunday we have stuff in to eat.

It did occur to me earlier that the kids don't have wellies so if it does snow and they want to play in it they are going to get wet feet 😬
