I eat in a local restaurant weekly after work, so I typically go in with no makeup on. I am 35 and suffering with really painful cystic acne. Tried everything, my face is a mess.

Anyway, I go in on New Year’s Eve fully made up in makeup. The owners wife turns to me and says, wow, I didn’t even recognise you with makeup on, you look so much better with makeup on. After seeing I was embarassed and me mumbling ahh I suffer with my skin she stands and lists all the things allergy, hormones, everything as though to help. Yet making me feel worse and more of a spectacle. What she was saying is. God you look dog rough when I see you in the week. You should continue to paint your face to hide the offensive marks. I didn’t fucking appreciate it. Not one bit.

So got me thinking. What dumb shit have people said to you that ruined your day?

Not as serious as many posts but it did somewhat upset me. A friend said I wasn't smiling on a photo she took "because of your teeth". I have got crooked teeth but I tend not to give a fuck. It really made me wonder if my teeth are more ugly than I realise. Yeah they probably are but at least I'm not a thoughtless, shallow cow who would say something like that.

I’ve got a huge gap between my front teeth (not fixable) and I hate it. I hear comments about other people’s teeth and it makes me wince as I wonder what people are saying about mine! That said at 46 they aren’t changing any time soon so 🤷🏽‍♀️

piscofrisco · 07/01/2026 07:36

I have one objectively stunning child and one still good looking but not as stunning child. The amount of times people comment on it in front of them BOTH is incredible. ‘Oh wow child a, you’re stunning aren’t you? You wouldn’t think she was your sister would you child b?’ Or ‘isn’t child an amazing looking Pisco?’ When child b is standing next to me. It’s affected them both very badly in different ways. People have no tact at all.

When I was a teenager I wore natural looking make up most days. One day I went make up free and went to the local shop, the kind older woman at the till gasped and asked me if I was ok, she thought I looked really unwell 😂 this was genuine concern though I really don’t think she’d noticed it was make-up vs no make-up.

you have my sympathy with adult cystic acne, I had it for years. I tried everything (but roacutane), just seemed to get worse. The thing that fixed it for me was stopping almost every treatment. I only wash my face every other day in the shower, gentle exfoliate with a flannel, hyloronic acid, basic moisturiser, otherwise I just don’t touch it. Sorry for more unsolicited advice, I often want to give unsolicited advice to strangers but of course bite my tongue because it’s incredibly rude, only doing so here because it’s all anon and hopefully not embarrassing like it would be in public. I had been reading about products damaging the skin barrier and skin microbiome, but some exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells. Been clear for about 6 years and recently tried to drop the hyloronic acid and the cysts were back after few weeks 🙄

People do look better with makeup, that’s the point of it but yes rude to say. So many of these have no bad intentions but are clumsy compliments. It’s just better to not say anything!
I told someone they look amazing last year, she is the type who posts her photo lots and likes getting likes. I was told later she has an ED and I felt bad I’d conplimented her when she was in the thick of it. I just avoid it now

Yeah, the older I get, the more I realise it's just better not to say anything about people's appearance. The person who's lost weight might have cancer, for example. If you want to say something nice and give someone a boost, it's best to compliment their clothes or accessories or say how such-and-such a colour looks good on them.

A bloke once told me that he ‘understands statistics’ and there are only 3 million single fathers in America versus 12 million single mums which means single mums are the problem as they are basically all sleeping with the same men.

Oh that made me laugh out loud.

You wonder sometimes if people hear themselves.

I have to deal with a lot of older people as part of my job. many are well into their mid- late nineties. Many have a few mobility problems/ arthiritis heart problems etc. . So many times they say to me " I never ever thought I'd end up like this ". I honestly want to ask them well what did you think you'd be like if you lived to a great age, did you just think you would carry on doing ten mile hikes forever and nipping up the stairs like a twenty year old ? Of course I don't and I probably am just being mean but everytime I hear it I just think what on earth did they expect ?

They probably mean't they thought they would be dead before then!

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, my SIL told me to be careful because people die from that. Thanks SIL,that hadn't occurred to me at all!

Fecking hell. In all three of these cases, it sounds like the women don't have a brain cell between them.

I have also heard the ginger comment. A woman I know said exactly the same thing... when she was pregnant (2022 I think it was.) I said 'do you know if it's a boy or a girl yet?' when she was 6 months gone. And SHE said 'I don't care, as long as it's not a fucking ginge!'

What the fuck? Confused

Ginger hair is awesome. My niece has a DH who has a ginger haired mum, although he is blonde. She is planning on 'trying for a baby' next year, and is praying the baby will have ginger hair. There's a 25-30% chance or something. (His brother has ginger hair.)

Agree - ginger hair is absolutely beautiful. I wish I had flame-coloured hair! I'd grow it down to my bum if I did.

27TimesAway · 06/01/2026 14:41

Oh hearing of the stupid things people say when pregnant, when we announced I was pg with DC1 a distant relative of DH's looked me up and down and said 'Well, you've got your feet under the table properly now haven't you?'.

DH was so incensed that he refused to have anything to with her or go to her funeral some 15 years later from that point on.

No way! Omg!!!

Of course worryingpis a choice. You choose to worry or you can choose not to. Self control.

You obviously don't suffer from uncontrollable worry but some people do. You, of course, could choose to understand that not everybody is the same as you, but for some reason, you chose not to.

My childminder had another kid who had the same name as my DS (imagine both called Alex). Both boys blond/ curly hair/ blue eyes. Someone who knew they both had the same name asked her: are they brothers? Like yes, if I had another one I will also call it Alex, for simplicity.

Ha ha! My neighbour's grandson asked if my other cat was 'a spare one'. But he was only four.

Pics of Chris Moyles didn't load well. Try again...

He's ugly in both, isn't he!? Some people get attractive when they lose weight. He ain't one of them!

YourDearDreamer · 06/01/2026 19:54

Gahr · 06/01/2026 18:47

How horrible of her. She probably feels bad about her weight and is being mean to build herself up.

I don't know about that bull I do know is if shes being called out for her weight and she knows how it makes her feel. Why do it to someone else.

Abd80 · 06/01/2026 19:44

This is just so RUDE ! I can’t believe this happened to you.
As someone who has had severe acne - have you been to a Dermatologist for Roaccutane treatment ? Really changed my life.

How rude and ignorant of that tutor. In the Renaissance, red hair was considered the height of beauty. Also, when I think of really stunning celebrities, (at least the women) a LOT have red hair. Think Rita Hayworth, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain, Karen Gillan. Plus Nicola Roberts from GA, who has really grown into her beauty. I still remember asshole Chris Moyles making rude remarks about her and calling her the 'ugly one'. I think she is now the most beautiful and youngest looking of them!

The irony of Chris Moyles saying Nicola Roberts is ugly! 😂 Look at him! (And look at her!)

Why do such unnattractive and repugnant men always make such derogatory remarks about clearly attractive women? You never get very good looking men saying such things... I saw something like this yesteday on Facebook. A female comedian in her 30s, had been trolled by a fat ugly man in his 50s. He'd posted pics saying 'Look at the sate of you!' He looked like Jabba The Hutt. 😆

My husband died suddenly and unexpectedly 2 years ago I was 41, my dad told me to have a great day less than a week later and I was told by numerous people in the first few months that I'm young I will meet someone else
fuck off

PollyAnna284 · 06/01/2026 19:30

I've struggled with alopecia on and off over the years, and it often leaves me with large, circular bald spots on my otherwise thick head of curly hair. For the first few years I would be devastated everytime a new spot would appear, and I would be so embarrassed i would wear my hair up when in public so it was not so noticeable. In time, I made my peace with it, and would actually forget about the various landing pads atop my crown. Sitting with a friend outside a pub one spring time, an older gentleman in head- to- toe tweed, and on the spicy end of one too many lunchtime sherries, saunters over and loudly proclaims to the garden "dear GOD, I've never seen a woman with male pattern baldness!! Are you diseased? It looks like a bloody crop circle!"

Luckily I had developed a thick skin by then and was able to find amusement in the shamelessness of it all- my friend and I will often still ask each other "are you diseased?" instead of " how are you?" -but it made me distinctly aware of how thoughtless and tactless people can be. Whilst the older gentleman was rather amusing, the group of women nudging each other and whispering as I stood in line for coffee, or the well meaning holistic therapist who approached me in the street to ask if I had considered rubbing unpasterised butter on my bald spots, can unexpectedly sting.

You have my sympathy, OP. If you feel inclined, I find a simple "what a strange thing to say out loud" often shuts down unnecessary comments, but perhaps it is worth branching out to less familiar environments for a while, so that you can eat in peace.. I often found that annonyminity gives me a sense of peace when feeling vulnerable.
Sending support and good thoughts to you ❤️

Yep 41 and since the age of 38 I have acne. Never had it as a teenager not a single spot. I tried a peel and had a reaction. It left a small burn mark and my cousin decided to tell me the 'truth' about my skin. Her words " I'm sorry but you've fucked your face up. I thought I'd let you know. I mean who the fuck says that to someone who you know is feeling low about their skin. I don't wear makeup never have done. I just dont get the time with 3 kids and 1 of them being epileptic, severely autistic, suffers from migraines and non verbal. This came as a shock to me as she's very obese and often was bullied by the family about her weight and I would talk to her and even got her to go to the gym with me. I was absolutely shocked so I know how you feel. Xx

How horrible of her. She probably feels bad about her weight and is being mean to build herself up.

I don't know why people do this.

One of my A level tutors was generally nice, but one day, while she was talking to our class about the heritability of different eye colours, she ended up mentioning the recessive gene for red hair, and joked that if her adult daughter had picked "the wrong husband", her children could end up with red hair.

People laughed, while the one student with red hair blushed scarlet, but the tutor didn't seem to notice.

I think red hair is beautiful and striking and I don't know why some people not only see it as a negative, but assume everyone else does as well.

How rude and ignorant of that tutor. In the Renaissance, red hair was considered the height of beauty. Also, when I think of really stunning celebrities, (at least the women) a LOT have red hair.
