I eat in a local restaurant weekly after work, so I typically go in with no makeup on. I am 35 and suffering with really painful cystic acne. Tried everything, my face is a mess.

Anyway, I go in on New Year’s Eve fully made up in makeup. The owners wife turns to me and says, wow, I didn’t even recognise you with makeup on, you look so much better with makeup on. After seeing I was embarassed and me mumbling ahh I suffer with my skin she stands and lists all the things allergy, hormones, everything as though to help. Yet making me feel worse and more of a spectacle. What she was saying is. God you look dog rough when I see you in the week. You should continue to paint your face to hide the offensive marks. I didn’t fucking appreciate it. Not one bit.

So got me thinking. What dumb shit have people said to you that ruined your day?

@BatchCookBabe re the ginger thing, my Dh is ginger, well was ginger when he had all his hair. My sister is also very vibrant ginger. Many people commented on this while I was pregnant, not blatantly saying it but saying 'would you mind if you had a ginger baby?'

OMG just remembered something else when my 3rd was born, i took him for his heel prick test and the nurse literally boomed down the corridor 'we've got a redhead'!

Yeah, this is why the best thing is to just say NOTHING about someone's bodily appearance unless it's to complement their accessories or tell them that the colour they're wearing looks good on them, or some such. You just never, ever know.

Whyyyyyy, just whyyyyy would you say that!!!

After 22 years of trying and IVF, I had a miscarriage at 16 weeks. I worked on a hospital ward and the ward priest asked me if I'd been off sick, when I told him about miscarrying my IVF baby he told me that my baby was "an abomination against God"

Jesus fucking Christ.

Even if his religious belief is that babies should only be conceived the old-fashioned way, his choice to say such a thing to a bereaved mother is very UNreligious and a sign of a cruel person. He deserves someone to write a complaint about him to his superiors, because that is NOT how a priest is supposed to behave.

When i gave birth to my 3rd son, my friend's mum commented 'Don't worry love, hopefully the next one will be a girl' not even a congratulations!

I used to work in customer service and customers would often say ‘oh I can see you have a cold because your nose is red’. Nope, just the rosacea, but thanks for pointing it out! It happened so often, and I used to have to just agree that I had a cold to avoid the awkwardness. I started wearing makeup after that I and I never go anywhere without my concealer now.

I have rosacea and during a flare up, my cheeks and nose are very red. I can disguise it with make up, but one day my cousin called round early in the morning before I put my concealer on and before she even said hello, said Your nose is bright red!
Not terrible, but so annoying and inconsiderate, as she knows full well that I have this condition.

First time at a m/ h drop in session the key worker remarked " you don't look depressed ". What does a depressed person look like exactly? What a way to invalidates someone's feelings. Some people are utterly shit.

A few years ago when I was a support worker, I was queuing at a Morrisons cafe with a young man I was supprting who had Down’s syndrome. We were happily deciding what we wanted to order, when I felt a tap on my shoulder and a very kindly lady said “ I’ve got one of those at home” WTF!

I don't think it is unfair to say that being of normal size is more attractive than being obese. Would 'more attractive' be better wording? FYI would say the same about someone who was underweight gaining weight.

I have to agree, and I don't think you said anything wrong. Most people will look better at a normal/healthy weight than they do when they're obese. As you say, that poster wouldn't have said anything if you'd said someone who weighed 6 stone looked better and healthier when they reached a healthier weight of 8 and a half stone.

I was holding my newborn identical twin daughters when a man who I didn’t know (was a friend of a friend) told me how he always had a fantasy of a threesome with twins!

I had these exact same comments when my baby daughter was still born, absolutely crazy, I think people just don’t know what to say. Sorry for your loss.

My daughter was stillborn too. Sorry for your loss x

The rude colleague at work who we all detest

I was eating a doughnut

Rude colleague "How much weight did you lose again, didn’t you win a slimming world award for it?"

Look Jane a singular doughnut-the first I’ve had in weeks isn’t going to cause me to regain the 6st I lost.

My sister was trying some sort of tough love approach in trying to get me to lose weight. I said now isn't really the time for me to be thinking about that. She said "why isn't it a good time? Is it Christmas or something?"
No, it's just that I had a baby 10 days ago, I'm EBF, I'm still very sore and I'm sleep-deprived. I don't really feel up to coming jogging with you or eating nothing but salad. So fuck off.

My mum would say “ oh you look so tired and run down etc etc “
If I look tired and run down then how about you don’t mention it OR if you’re going to mention it then say you’re concerned and are going to help me with my 3 small children

Yes, quite. This comment is only acceptable if you are finishing you sentence with "when do you want me to have the kids/let me do that washing up for you/why don't I sit here while you go and have a lie-down/here's a fuckton of chocolate and a big glass of wine".
DO NOT comment on how tired someone looks unless you immediately follow it up with some love and support, you absolute pinecones.

OtterlyAstounding · 07/01/2026 22:22

I have to say, that article sounds very r/thathappened (aka, a fantasist's invention).

I don't see why women would have any reason to be nasty to an attractive woman unless the more attractive woman was the sort to go around trying to cause trouble, inserting herself into relationships etc. I'd wager it's likely something other than sheer looks at play, such as a personality clash, or insecurity on one friend's part that would come out in some way even if her friend wasn't 'stunning'. But then, I haven't studied it, just guessing.

When my baby daughter died we were told "god only takes the best" or he must have needed another angel. Or I know how your feeling as when my 80 year old gran died. Yep not the same. Sometimes people don't realise saying nothing is best lol.

DH and I having dinner with in-laws at their house. MIL, as usual, is doing everything for FIL. Getting up from the table to fetch him sauces, napkins, drinks, a better knife etc. FIL never lifts a finger. MIL has been his dutiful doting wife servant like this for decades.

After MIL gets up to fetch him something else for the umpteenth time, FIL turns to DH and says "look at this son, you could have a wife like this"

I'm sat right there. RIGHT. THERE.

🤣🤣🤣

Lollipop81 · 07/01/2026 22:09

Interesting. Is the suggestion that the more attractive a woman is, the nastier other women will be to her? I haven't found that to be the norm, if so, either in my own experience or through observation.

I've always found that, even in high school, it has to do more with personality, and social skills (so, the ability to fit in with social norms).

Just anecdotally, it seems so, from watching these two friends. I googled it actually, since a sample size of two isn't very much (and I would have no idea since am not at all attractive) and found this:

https://archive.ph/RHiJE/again?url=www.thecut.com/2018/04/what-its-like-to-be-a-really-beautiful-woman.html

I guess it's a hidden prejudice, if it exists, in that you wouldn't know how bad the hate can be if you are not stunning yourself.

Mum23plusC · 07/01/2026 21:32

From my MIL: Gosh you have lost weight haven't you? I thought you'd reached the age where you couldn't lose it.

also boy girl twins and an actual nurse said it to me when I took them for their hip scan!

Ooh god I'll never forget watching a game show (can't remember which one it was) in the early 2000s and everyone screaming at the TV because some woman was deliberating for absolutely ages over the question "are Tom Thumb and Thumbalina identical twins"

Even after the host said "ones a boy and ones a girl" and the whole audience laughed, she still had no idea.

Dad once had to give my title/name/address etc to a bank official to authorise me to talk to them on the phone on his behalf.
He told them that I was a Ms because I was a divorced person.
A conversation was had. Although I don’t think I was ever forgiven for not being “settled” ie married.

Many titles don't really matter. He perhaps thought Ms was right. I'm divorced but am called Mrs, Miss and Ms in various places. It doesn't mean anything and I wish we'd dispense with all of them!
