I eat in a local restaurant weekly after work, so I typically go in with no makeup on. I am 35 and suffering with really painful cystic acne. Tried everything, my face is a mess.

Anyway, I go in on New Year’s Eve fully made up in makeup. The owners wife turns to me and says, wow, I didn’t even recognise you with makeup on, you look so much better with makeup on. After seeing I was embarassed and me mumbling ahh I suffer with my skin she stands and lists all the things allergy, hormones, everything as though to help. Yet making me feel worse and more of a spectacle. What she was saying is. God you look dog rough when I see you in the week. You should continue to paint your face to hide the offensive marks. I didn’t fucking appreciate it. Not one bit.

So got me thinking. What dumb shit have people said to you that ruined your day?

A so called friend who turned up to my Mum's funeral caked in make up saying: "I wouldnt be caught dead with no make up on," tinkly laugh
Nope, don't see her any more

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 06/01/2026 07:58

I was with my dad when we bumped into a relative of my mum's. My dad had mixed dementia, she patted him on the shoulder and said "Are you all better now?"

Some people just can't help themselves.

But it doesn't just mean that does it? It also means unable to speak so equates that condition with being stupid . That's why it's offensive.

Yes that’s what why we now use mute.

Get a grip!

ProcrastinatingAlways · 06/01/2026 07:52

Was in America, out for Halloween and got talking to an American girl (we were both in our 20s) and she asked where I was from. Having said England, she replied, ‘ah that’s lovely, which language do we speak here?’

user491057 · 06/01/2026 07:51

I'm 5'10".

I was waiting in a shop queue minding my own business when this scruffy, short man behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said nastily "You're tall for a woman aren't you?". I looked him up and down and replied "Yes, and YOU'RE short for a man arent you?" He shut up then. 🤣

Idontjetwashthefucker · 06/01/2026 07:43

Is it...why?

It’s just a very odd thing to say. So odd it’s funny!

Ginburee · 06/01/2026 07:47

I met someone for coffee after my died died and she spent time telling me how she couldn't imagine never talking to or hugging her dad again.
I haven't seen her since.

Manename · 06/01/2026 07:45

Have told this before.
Due to taking anti depressants I had put on a lot of weight very quickly (10kg/1st 8lb in a month)

Hadn’t told many people - man at church - did you know that your face has got very fat? (Actually I didn’t until then)

ElderlyCat · 06/01/2026 07:43

And for the others who mentioned it, I also always got are they natural about the twins and ‘were you trying for twins?’ Not sure how you can ‘try’ for them, maybe there is a secret position I don’t about!

Amberlynnswashcloth · 06/01/2026 07:42

Attended the walk in health centre with a skin infection and the receptionist asked me how it happened to which I replied that I had no idea - it just became infected. Then she asked me what it was infected with to which I replied that I had no idea presumably some sort of bacteria but I couldn't possible know which.

What a daft set of questions!

ElderlyCat · 06/01/2026 07:40

@ItsStillWork I used to get this all the time too! Made even worse by the fact my girl twin has down syndrome and my boy twin doesn’t! People were always disappointed when I said no too, like I had the rubbish version of twins 😂

I can’t even begin with the list of stupid things people said when my DD was born with Down syndrome but ones that stand out off the top of my head are ‘you don’t look old enough to have a Down’s baby’ and ‘how bad will she be when she’s older?’

My son was a late talker(3 before he spoke single words) in a taxi one day and the taxi driver was trying to speak to him, I said he can’t answer you he’s non verbal.. the taxi driver told me I should try talking to him, that’s what he does with his grandson and he can speak full sentences.

Ahhh that’s great, you know, in the 2 and Half years of his life I’ve never spoken a word to him!🤦🏻‍♀️

My parents also blame autism on not talking to children. They recently berated a friend for causing it in his grand daughter as she had too much screen time.

I have cancer. I don't tend to tell people unless necessary. But the amount of people who will then launch into a tale about Auntie Violet/Uncle Fester who died a terrible death with that exact cancer. Just why? I'm shit with people and small talk yet even I realise that's totally inappropriate.

This! I have cancer and it's often the first thing people say when they find out. 'Oh I knew such and such who had that, she died of it'. I cannot fathom how people think this is helpful!

Stargazingstargazer · 06/01/2026 07:35

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/01/2026 22:53

Ooh twins. Are they natural?

I’d forgotten that one! So unbelievably prying. I’m more forgiving of the boy-girl twins ‘are they identical’ one though, because I once said that to a grown up girl twin who had just pointed out her brother across the room. 😳. I then went on many years later to have boy-girl twins! I think it’s just verbal diarrhoea due to the twin fascination thing.

"But isn't it lonely? It just seems selfish."

I'm single and childfree. It's neither.

They never think that having a baby because ''I waaan one'' is a selfish choice though.

itsme43 · 06/01/2026 07:31

One of many examples - 5 days postpartum - mil says - “bet you can’t wait to lose your pooch”.

People say dumb shit ALL the time.

Puppylucky · 06/01/2026 07:28

pinkstripeycat · 05/01/2026 23:45

Ummmm dumb means thick or stupid or thoughtless so OP has used the word correctly.

But it doesn't just mean that does it? It also means unable to speak so equates that condition with being stupid . That's why it's offensive.

Bojosgirl · 06/01/2026 07:25

itstrue · 05/01/2026 23:23

I was holding my newborn identical twin daughters when a man who I didn’t know (was a friend of a friend) told me how he always had a fantasy of a threesome with twins!

OMG. Just why. Think you win the most inappropriate thing to say award. Can't tell you how shocked I am.

MaggieBsBoat · 06/01/2026 07:23

So many

  • do you know how to use birth control? (Pregnant at a lovely dinner party, random US woman speaks her mind. I mention her nationality as she did approximately 100 times that evening, as a way of explaining her rudeness after she saw everyone’s faces. No. I’ve lived in the US and don’t know anyone as rude as you madam. I think it’s just being an ass)
  • when did you give birth?? Why are you still fat? (Two weeks post partum. Random Scottish woman. Nationality mentioned for equity)
  • pakis are the worst for it! (Said by the lollipop man to me while I’m walking my British Pakistani children home from school, talking about running red lights. Idiot)
  • Muslims make me afraid (said to me, a Muslim, in front of my kids, by an ex friend)
AquaForce · 06/01/2026 07:21

My friend was with her son in his buggy. A woman told her not to worry, it had taken her a long time to lose the baby weight as well.

That's bad enough but what's worse is, he's adopted. That lead to a very awkward question where she asked me if she was fat 😳

"You don't look autistic"

What do autistic people look like? 🤔

Oh yeah that classic! 😡

Pricelessadvice · 06/01/2026 07:15

Cystic acne is bloody awful. So sorry you had to deal with such an insensitive person OP xx

@OneDearFawn Roaccutane doesn’t always cause depression. Most people aren’t affected in that way by it and it is revolutionary. You could try it and monitor mood?

The issue is that if you or your family has a history of mental illness, including depression, you are contraindicated. I would have loved to go on it, but my beloved grandmother had bipolar disorder and due to a spate of suicides linked to the drug the limitations for use are really strict. I suppose one could withhold family information when discussing with the doctor, but if OP has had a personal diagnosis of depression in the past, they won’t be able to prescribe it.

My non identical twins boys were around 15 months old and getting their first haircut.

A fellow mother in the hairdressers asked if they were twins. I reply - Yes they are.

They are not identical twins though are they ?(one had white blonde hair like his father who was with me and the other had mid brown hair like
me). I reply - no they are not.

Are you sure they are twins ? They really don’t look alike at all. Reply - yes definitely twins (fake laugh).

Really? - Yup (now I’m a bit bemused).

Turns to my husband

Do they have the same father?
