DUMB SHIT People say

I eat in a local restaurant weekly after work, so I typically go in with no makeup on. I am 35 and suffering with really painful cystic acne. Tried everything, my face is a mess.

Anyway, I go in on New Year’s Eve fully made up in makeup. The owners wife turns to me and says, wow, I didn’t even recognise you with makeup on, you look so much better with makeup on. After seeing I was embarassed and me mumbling ahh I suffer with my skin she stands and lists all the things allergy, hormones, everything as though to help. Yet making me feel worse and more of a spectacle. What she was saying is. God you look dog rough when I see you in the week. You should continue to paint your face to hide the offensive marks. I didn’t fucking appreciate it. Not one bit.

So got me thinking. What dumb shit have people said to you that ruined your day?

"Your house always makes me feel better about the state of my house" 😆

I also remember going to the doctor 15 with a sore throat and coming out with a prescription for "that acne on your forehead". One spot! He was really into dermatology though and I don't think he could help it.

whoamitojudge · 06/01/2026 08:59

I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic a few years ago and was talking about it to someone at work who said “ oh you don’t look diabetic” 🤦‍♀️

OneDearFawn · 05/01/2026 22:54

Definitely, just why? Not nearly the same level as you but my dad was recently in hospital with prostate issues so catheterised. In the waiting room the guy next to him was telling him he’d had to have his bladder out, permanent catheter could never wee again and it was a blood bath weekly getting a new one in and out. My face as he’s recounting this story and he doesn’t pick up the social que!

I wish you all the best with your treatment and I don’t blame you for not wanting to unload ♥️and go through it privately

That's shocking. What pm earth is wrong with these people?

Busydaybadge · 06/01/2026 08:51

Someone congratulated me on my pregnancy at work. I wasn't pregnant.

My parents also blame autism on not talking to children. They recently berated a friend for causing it in his grand daughter as she had too much screen time.

My mil insisted on attending a meeting with my son's senco and it became obvious she was trying to blame me letting him on the computer too much (senco put her in her place!)

BatchCookBabe · 06/01/2026 08:50

Are we talking about dumb shit, or nasty shit? Because @OneDearFawn what that woman said was nasty. 'You look better with make up on' is a mean thing to say. As is 'you look better without make up' to someone who usually wears it and is seen one time without it.

I have had quite a number of people say cunty things to me over the years/decades. One example is a man (a colleague of DH) saying 'still got that big belly then, I thought you'd had the baby!' 😆 13 DAYS after I had had my first child. 13 fucking days. I had been in hospital for 10 days after having a c-section, and had hardly moved for 5-6 days because of the c-section. My DH said 'she had the baby less than 2 weeks ago dickhead!' The bloke just laughed. I was annoyed, but OK actually, as I was grateful I wasn't married to him.

Then I have had comments from rude and ignorant people about my choice of husband, my car, my house, my weight, too many to mention. Whilst lots of people are perfectly nice, sadly some people are rude and opinonated twats, who think the earth would fall of its axis if they didn't spout their rancid opinions and views. They just assume everyone needs to hear the shit they spout, because they're sooooo fucking important! 🙄

I don't know why some people are like this. The 'I tell it like it is' brigade. No mate, you're just an arrogant twat who nobody likes.

JustYourAveregeMillennialMam · 06/01/2026 08:49

I have an autistic son, I get some absolute pearlers on a daily basis 😂

”I’m so sorry” it’s autism babe not a flesh eating disease.
The classic “he doesn’t look autistic”
“He’ll grow out of it I’m sure” well if you’re sure… 😂
”Oh I don’t know how you do it I could never.” Well I do it cause I love my son but either way I don’t suppose I’d have much choice either way.

People just have no brain 😂

Katemax82 · 06/01/2026 08:46

My stepdad when he found out I was having my 3rd boy..",when will you know if he's autistic?" (My 2 older sons are)
Another time.."let's hope he's not autistic!". When he said that I was tempted to tell him to try saying that to my 6ft4 autistic son who wouldn't appreciate it one bit

Mumwithbaggage · 06/01/2026 08:44

I was in hospital to be induced. Midwife says oh how lovely, you're having twins. I pointed out that if she'd read my notes she'd have known that one had a lethal heart condition and would not survive (she lived just 24 hours). Was 30 years ago now but I still remember it very clearly. I've been through enough to put up with crap from people. I often look tired as I'm pale and if people tell me so, I just ask if they are always that rude.

diddl · 06/01/2026 08:44

ItsStillWork · 05/01/2026 22:46

Boy girl twins.

strangers: “are they identical?”

🙄

I can imagine me saying that😊

Couple of times I've had to stop myself & let my brain catch up with the logic first.

Luckyingame · 06/01/2026 08:39

Dumb shit people say?
Oh, " I'm a nice person".
I start avoiding these bastards, who are anything but nice.

Theunamedcat · 06/01/2026 08:39

Im surprised he is autistic he is so friendly....like autistic people arnt friendly? What?

God never gives you more than you can cope with.....yes he fucking does endlessly and relentlessly

My son was a late talker(3 before he spoke single words) in a taxi one day and the taxi driver was trying to speak to him, I said he can’t answer you he’s non verbal.. the taxi driver told me I should try talking to him, that’s what he does with his grandson and he can speak full sentences.

Ahhh that’s great, you know, in the 2 and Half years of his life I’ve never spoken a word to him!🤦🏻‍♀️

Must have been very awkward, you and the bairn sitting in complete silence for 3 years 😂 I’m sorry the driver was so insensitive. Seriously, do some people just not engage their brain before opening their mouths?

Goditsmemargaret · 06/01/2026 08:32

Omg some of the post here's are mad, how are you all encountering such horrible people?

I hope this doesn't offend anyone but was the lady in the restaurant another nationality?

I remember years ago working abroad, I had been sent over in a senior role to sort out an underperforming team of three women. Every bloody morning when I'd arrive in my weight and appearance would be assessed. "Oh! These clothes are good. They make you look slim. You should wear these more often... What did you have for breakfast. Good that won't make you gain weight"

My colleague from home arrived over. She had been there the years before. "Oh no! What happened? You have gained so much weight."

Absolutely mad.

Back home I had cancer and was wearing a variety of long blonde wigs some years ago. We went to a local restaurant regularly. Finally I decide to ditch the wigs and reveal my cropped dark hair. They owner shrieked in horror when she saw me "why did you cut your hair. Why???" We actually couldn't stop laughing. It would have been terrible if I had cut it and regretted it.

Thank you!! I’d love roaccuntane but apparently they won’t prescribe if you have a history of depression or I’d be on it tomorrow! Thanks for the recommendation

I had good results from my second round of roaccutane, although it wasn’t easy to get through the NHS, about 18 months I think of trying everything else the GPs could think of (even if I’d already tried it). I remember the conversations around depression - always felt a bit daft that feeling low largely because I had acne might prevent me from having the medication that would help with the acne! I think talking about it to the dermatologist in that way helped.
It wasn’t a magic cure though, I’m still prone to acne now but I’ve discovered tretinoin really helps me keep it under control. Might be worth asking about that too.

notatinydancer · 06/01/2026 08:28

I met a woman at work who used to come in to my previous workplace she said ‘ oh look at you, you used to be so young and pretty’ 😂

Dontlletmedownbruce · 05/01/2026 23:33

I have found in life when you tell certain people what's happening especially if it's negative, they tell you about someone else they know who is going through the same thing. Then they give you the other person's story or half arsed version, and don't really listen to you anyhow. Like they swoop in and dominate what should be your story. It's made me very reluctant to open up. Examples:
When my Mum had cancer. How's your Mum. Me: up and down, she is on chemo at the moment etc. Other person: my aunts friend is the same.... (long anecdote about someone we don't know)
Surely if we are going to allow ourselves a conversation about the impact of cancer it should be my turn.

Similarly when I had a miscarriage, two of my friends on different occasions were like 'Snap' and told me about a sister and colleague.

Other dumb examples from strangers:
Ooh twins, are they identical (boy/girl)
Are there twins in the family? This i believe is a polite way of asking about fertility treatment.
Is he sleeping? Me: no, not much. Stranger: have you tried X? X being the most obvious thing like a dummy or music.

Can't relate to the rest, but just the baby sleep bit. My one year old is a teerible sleeper, day and night. Father of newborn, literally 2 weeks old, 'have you heard of white noise? I put it on last night and newborn went right to sleep'. Have also been told to 'just let her lie down', apparently I'm preventing her?? Also been told (by FIL) to stop letting her nap during the day, at all!

DD also isn't and probably won't crawl, due, as it turns out, to hip dysplasia. A few weeks ago FIL asked why I won't 'let' her crawl. Asked in the same tone he uses when criticising me for not allowing her cake and biscuits. She's just gone 12 months.

TTC first baby at 38 after suffering a MC earlier in the year last year... MIL- "I think you just need to relax...maybe you should go on holiday!"

Push back on ‘history of depression in the family’. My daughter’s mental health was horrendous over her acne and she got it, eventually, in her twenties. The Dr was more concerned about the possibility of pregnancy and staying out of direct sunlight than mental health problems.
See a different GP if you have to.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 06/01/2026 08:23

I have a house rabbit. If pets come up in conversation I often hear either; a stupid comment about eating rabbits or people feel compelled to tell me about their childhood pet rabbit who died in an awful way.

Yes! This is sooooo true! Never had it with our cat or dog, but people can't wait to tell you about rabbits with awful lives and terrible deaths.

Ive learned to stop them now. "If youre going to tell me.... then DONT".

Astrabees · 06/01/2026 08:22

This thread has reminded me of someone I used to work with who was prone to making this sort of remark, a pity really as she was quite kind deep down. I had a challenging and draining job and she would often tell me I looked tired, which annoyed me no end. Once, when things were better, I arrived at work dressed for a conference later in the day and with my makeup on. She took one look and said “Astra, you look amazing, are you having an affair? “

Proudestmumofone1 · 06/01/2026 08:12

Stating the obvious with this one, but the ‘but you look great!’ comment when in hospital or just come out of hospital and battling life limiting illness.

doctors, friends, family… oh and then they tell another person that I’m doing great because I seemingly looked ok for 5 minutes,,.

Double winner for this comment when I’m skeletal, wearing kids clothes and can barely walk but meet societies standard of ‘Kate moss 90s all bones’ look, so apparently ‘look amazing!’

Flowerlovinglady · 06/01/2026 08:04

I actually said to a friend that she looked "so incredibly young and slim" in her wedding photo. Yeah, I know. It was a case of blurting it out before realising I'd just called her fat and old.

reversegear · 06/01/2026 05:42

Wow just wow, did you report the comment?

Oh yes. It was one of a number of complaints from the all-female group.

MaggieBsBoat · 06/01/2026 07:59

I don’t get the fascination with twins at all. I’ve known loads. They’re just people. Like even the identical ones. What is the big deal?!!!
