To ask why people are so utterly bonkers?

Reading about the man who faked being a naval officer to attend memorial events. The lengths he went to, getting a suit altered and buying medals of the internet. Was a professional teacher as well. Madness.

Then the ten people prosecuted for saying Brigitte Macron was born a man. Again, the efforts involved and they mostly appear professional people with full lives. Just mad.

Then you get the people on here pretending with fake stories or just trying to troll people. It’s just bizarre. It’s like validating you are indeed the saddest person ever.

I don’t get it. Is it the internet age? It’s like a boundary has been removed and people in freefall.

I am much more sceptical these days. A woman I knew well was apparently online claiming to be a qualified psychologist and psychotherapist variously specialising in trauma, addiction, ADHD, autism and also problematic pornography use. She also claimed to be working on 2 PhD's simultaneously. None of it was true but if you had heard her speak online she was very convincing and had even been invited to speak at conferences off the back of her online presence and backstory which was all entirely made up. She doesn't even have a single A level to her name, never mind a Ph.D. She did get caught out in the end.

Also see the Sally Walker Salt Path scandal. Just lies and self pity she even says it in the book that if you believe it yourself you can make other people believe. She is also far from the only writer to be caught out like this and many others who have do doubt got away with it.

Now when I think I always retrain some seed of doubt because in the end many people are just selling themselves as one thing or another, one idea or theory and there is often a good degree of bravado about it and its a fine line between gassing yourself up and utter fabrication.

I think there is a bit of a conspiracy theorist in all of us depending upon the topic.
i’ll be shot here but I have do think there is evidence that Brigette may have been born male “I know”. It could be easily disproven by Brigette. I know that she shouldn’t have to prove anything.

I know Candace is known as toxic but she is a good researcher.

An earlier poster said that the actual writer of the book about Brigitte has not been sued. That is interesting.

Why did they prosecute the people with Brigette Macron? Who cares if she is or isn't a man?

That’s a good point. It’s a bit what people think of me is none of my business.

I read something that said if someone said you are actually a Martian and not from earth you’d not be offended or spend ten minutes defending yourself and explaining that you weren’t . So when someone makes a judgemental comment treat it like a Martian comment and don’t get defensive. We get defensive because it hits a nerve.

appreciate there is more to the macron situation.

For a myriad of reasons from mental health issues, attention seeking, loneliness, low IQ, conspiracy theorists...people have always been this way. It's just more prominent now social media and forums exists. In the 80s/90s and before you were not confronted with it as often as once you were home, you didn't have a computer in your hand 24/7.

I think this summarises it well - it’s a mix of things , people wanting to belong, untreated mental illness, more family and relationship breakdown, loneliness, lack of a natural progressing order no matter how hard you work, my son has ditched his lovely , pretty, hardworking live in girlfriend after a few years because of the fear I think of missing out and expectations on ‘his time’ - I honestly think the internet has created all kinds of issues and expectations, whilst being a fantastic thing in other ways

My favourite bonkers conspiracy theory is the one that says Australia doesn't exist. I mean, where do you even start with that one?

People do seem to have become madder in recent years though. Less pleasant, more paranoid, more fearful...its not a good combination.

Covid Lockdown and the internet. The world has changed unfortunately.

Was on a train the other day. Not many people on it. A woman got on with a big suitcase, found an empty table for 4 and put her suitcase on one of the seats. Not really the done thing, but as I said, the train was pretty empty. She then opened the suitcase and got out a tupperware box containing some smelly fish and various bits of fruit. She cut up the fish and the fruit on the table (juice everywhere) and then put the small pieces of fish and fruit into smaller tupperware pots. Then she got her laptop out, looked vaguely normal for a while as if doing some work EXCEPT she was nibbling on bits of fruit/fish from her various pots. Then she got out a big plastic wallet full of loads of crumpled bits of paper, and a flask which I assume contained tea or coffee, AND a plastic bottle of milk AND a nice mug, and proceeded to prepare her beverage. I can kind of understand not wanting to buy a cup of tea in a disposable cup, but why not add the milk to the flask beforehand and drink out of the flask lid like you're meant to? She was clearly enjoying her picnic - of which I would say she was definitely a few sandwiches short.
I've had quite a few weird train encounters in my life. There are so many bonkers but (hopefully) harmless people out there.

All she's missing is a Trangia stove, so she can rustle up a stir-fry next time!

Is it possible that she also had a tea bag or some instant coffee in her kit. She may be an only ever hot water in the flask person. DH is one also.

That would explain the milk and then, y'know why not a nice cup too.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 06/01/2026 05:09

Who doesn't put cheese in the bechamel for lasagne? How weird? What about for macaroni cheese?

Amyway, weirdos abound. Human nature innit.

sashh · 06/01/2026 04:50

There have always been bonkers people, the internet has just made it easier for them to contact each other.

And allows the less bonkers to look on and occasionally comment.

Things like the man with the uniform and medals would probably still do it and probably get away with it.

AnneShirleyBlythe · 06/01/2026 04:37

There have always been people like this! Many years ago a colleague used to regale us with stories of her SIL who was a compulsive liar. This young woman had been involved in so many bizarre incidents apparently.
There was an extremely tragic incident that made international news & is still remembered today & colleague told us SIL was claiming she was there and witnessed it! We were all scoffing & eye rolling but the following day she was on the front of all the papers! Her story was true for once! But boy did she dine out on it! Interviews in the Sunday papers/ magazines etc.

rainandshine38 · 06/01/2026 04:11

Lots of people but cheese in the béchamel sauce, that doesn’t mean a thread is fake! Bonkers people on here too!

🤔

Interested to see no one has talked about people who falsely confess to serious crimes like murder etc. I'm sure there's a lot of interesting stuff going on with them. People have been doing it for centuries.

I married someone who insisted the Holocaust didn’t happen. ( didn’t know that when I married him)

I know someone who genuinely believes the earth is flat. He has no other bonkers beliefs, just this one, and comes across as pretty normal, but the fact he thinks this blows my fucking mind.

How do sailing boats work then? and aeroplanes? and what is on the other side of the 'flat' or does earth go on forever? What about the other planets? Are they flat or dont exist? is the sun real or a flatpack from Ikea? we need details please!

EmeraldRoulette · 06/01/2026 01:38

@GameofPhones oh I know
But I'm much more puzzled by the real life interactions - people shit posting on the Internet, whether paid or not, I don't really think about because the Internet is just mad.

@floppybit so presumably he thinks all the world's missing socks slid off the edge? Or got pushed off the edge by cats.

One of the crazy guys I know went to a seminar about flat earth. I had to ask. He said to me that he doesn't actually believe it, but it's fun to go. And apparently you meet lots of fun people. 🤷🏻‍♀️ These are the moments where I think all these people are just trolling us.

alright, it's 130 a.m., I better get out there and change the batteries in the birds while everyone's asleep.

GameofPhones · 06/01/2026 01:31

EmeraldRoulette · 05/01/2026 22:37

Pretty sure none of the men I've met who into conspiracies are being paid by Russia....🤔😱😂 I would expect them to be a lot better off for a start!

I meant the conspiracy starters may be paid by Russia.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 06/01/2026 00:59

Capitalism, social media, stress, drugs, bad foods, imposter syndrome, who knows the correct reason.
There is a lot of madness and anger everywhere.

ChangedWhoIWas · 06/01/2026 00:29

What about the conspirators who say Australia doesn’t exist and that we’re all just paid actors - I, myself, am still waiting on my first pay Confused

PollyBell · 06/01/2026 00:14

I think some people are gamblers, alcoholics, drug addicts, have OCD or even paranoia people are talking about or judging them and yes believe in conspiracies

I think there is something in some people that would come out as any of the above or any other addiction

There are some people who need to believe in conspiracies, makes no sense to me but yes I do see it as like an 'addiction'

Our Walt actually blu-tacked a photo of himself and his 'comrades-in-arms' onto the corner of his computer screen.

Upon closer inspection, I realised that he'd printed out and cut out the regimental crest and had glued it onto a photo of him and his mates dressed up for paintballing.

😂Some of these stories are hilarious!! Thanks for the laughs😁
