Made the lasagna without the lasagna

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ok, I’ll give you carrots, but peppers have absolutely no place in a lasagna.

Peppers do not belong in a lasagna I agree, and I'm shocked by the confidence posters have with their heathen lasagna recipes

There's nothing worse than looking forward to a delicious lasagna (or bolognese) to find it tastes of bloody red pepper. Almost as bad as sweetcorn

OneMintWasp · 06/01/2026 23:01

Bit late to this but pancakes are nice in a lasagne rather than pasta sheets.

FridayNightFever · 06/01/2026 22:39

I know no one cares by this point but I just have to share my thoughts -
Potatoes as a side - fine. I often have roasties or chips with a lasagne. And sometimes bread too. Love my carbs
Cheese in the sauce - more than fine. Plain bechamel is boring (I'm vegetarian, though, so that might be why). I also add mozzarella to my layers and on top.
BUT lasagna is just a form of pasta so using a different shape would have been an entirely acceptable solution to the problem.
If having potatoes on the side felt weird - put them in the fridge and have them with something tomorrow.
And salad in winter is fine. How odd!
Again, I know all of this is irrelevant now but, my god, I needed to get that off my chest.

There is a little-known internet law:

Doesn't matter what forum it's on - a thread about lasagna will always end in tears and vendettas.
Lasagna with potatoes might end in WWIII.

A horse’s head in the OP’s bed!

I really wish we still had a laughing emoji 😂

You’re not wrong though.

Perhaps Meloni will declare war?

Why is it bizarre though?? I’ve had this since childhood

Its bizarre because noone else does.

That is what makes something 'odd', when the (vast) majority dont do it. Just because YOU have had that since childhood doesnt chanhe that.

Hence why noone can understand why it would be 'weird' with pasta, but not with lasagna (which is pasta!)

SockBanana · 06/01/2026 21:59

I had no idea what sofrito was - just googled and I do use it, but didnt know it had a name.

Love this thread, and the OPs mad dinner. I'd eat it if that's all there was - don't think I'd cook it deliberately though 😆

ShiraShira · 06/01/2026 21:58

Presumably OP was planning on having double carbs!

Justbreathagain · 06/01/2026 21:56

This thread is hilarious. Obsession with potatoes, I have never had potatoes to a side of lasagne and never put cheese in the sauce. So funny. What did you mam say ? Did you ring her ?

Mussolini wouldnt have stood for this.

Italy just turned in its grave

So did Ireland. She overboiled the potatoes.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:38

The potatoes were to go with the lasagna, my family like some buttery boiled potatoes with it

I don’t think I can slice the potatoes-too soft 😬

katepilar · 06/01/2026 21:34

Just eat it with whatever you have, potatoes, pasta, cous-cous, rice, bread, salad...
This is the first thread when I just cant believe that this a genuine question you cant answer yourself.

You absolutely do use carrots. Those are one of the essential ingredients.

Anything else is what parents call “hidden veg.”

Alcoholrecovery · 06/01/2026 21:30

Potatoes with lasagne is my absolute favourite. I’m an over eater unfortunately but two large baked potatoes and butter with lasagne is one of my dream meals.

OhFeyreDarling · 06/01/2026 21:28

Weirdquestion1 · 06/01/2026 21:22

Make it as a baked pasta sauce and serve it over pasta.

Dinner was several hundred posts ago and yesterday

OhFeyreDarling · 06/01/2026 21:27

Brilliant post OP and you keep doing what the hell you like with your dinners. Gosh the food snobs on here have been more ridiculous than you.

Although I'm not sure I'm with you on salad not being able to be eaten when it's snowing, I love me some leafy greens regardless of the weather.

Oh for what it's worth, I put cheese in my sauce for 'Lasagne' too 😂But might have to up my ragu game after some suggestions on here

Agree! I don't think I would put pepper in, personally (though in keeping with my philosophy of absolute freedom to do what you like with your home-cooked lasagne, I would never say you couldn't put a pepper in). But I always start with very finely chopped carrot, celery and onion.

DBSFstupid · 06/01/2026 21:18

FOJN · 05/01/2026 15:14

OK I've read all the OP's posts and now I feel like I've smoked something illegal. WTF is going on?
Boiled potatoes with lasagne but no leafy greens because it's winter??????

😂😂😂I'm just catching up on this thread - I'm only on page 4 and feel as though I've been orbited somewhere far far away.....

It’s in the sauce. You slow cook the sauce with peppers and carrots, and then blend the sauce if you want it smooth.

You don’t just use onion, garlic and tomato.

Edited

I really don’t know at this point, everything I thought about lasagna since my childhood is a lie, Dh has never queried the boiled potatoes or cheese sauce though
I’m ringing my mum

Sorry but😂

soupyspoon · 06/01/2026 21:11

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 06/01/2026 21:09

I agree. Cooking should be fun, and as easy as you want it to be. The art of home cookery is using what you have and producing something reasonably tasty and nourishing!

@Brainfogtothemax I like to throw around the words "deconstructed", "fusion" and "pared-back" when naming my home experiments!

I think the vast majority of people on this thread have never seen an episode of Masterchef, with their rules and shock about putting this or that together

OP needs to apply pronto.
