Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Strange thread, I'm wondering if the OP has ever cooked a meal before? The concept of adding potatoes to lasagne is bizarre.

RampantIvy · 05/01/2026 15:19

Are you an inexperienced cook @Brainfogtothemax ?
You could crush the potatoes and put them on top of the meat sauce, brush with melted butter or oil and they will crisp up nicely in the oven to give a crispy golden topping. Serve with a vegetable of your choice.

Use the cheese sauce with macaroni or other pasta shape for tomorrow's dinner.

Now looking at the sad, dry boiled potatoes in the pan, how do I make it into mash as they are cold and the butter won’t melt or mash into it?

What a shit day 😂

Add some milk, leave that to heat then mash it.
Don't you add any fluid like milk or cream to mash?

soupyspoon · 05/01/2026 15:16

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:55

She added some of the grated cheese on top too and grilled it, some in the sauce, remainder on top

Its the Bridge of Sighs for her. No mistake

FOJN · 05/01/2026 15:14

OK I've read all the OP's posts and now I feel like I've smoked something illegal. WTF is going on?
Boiled potatoes with lasagne but no leafy greens because it's winter??????

cooldarkroom · 05/01/2026 15:14

Cant you make potatoes into mash & serve with the gloop?
or make mash , civer in fridge & skittle fry in patties tomorrow?
Cut into chunks & intersperse with gloop?

Tana433 · 05/01/2026 15:14

I have always made lasagne using cheese sauce and also sprinkled cheese over the top for the last 5/10 mins of cooking. I have never served potatoes with it although sometimes we will have garlic bread. Also i have always called my shepherds pie 'shepherds' pie although it is made using beef mince not lamb and is technically a 'cottage' pie. I really cant bring myself to care that i might be doing it wrong at this point in my life. Both dishes are super tasty so.........

moresneakers · 05/01/2026 15:13

I’ve never heard of lasagna with potatoes?!! But yeah just stick the potatoes on top and do cottage pie.

Blarn · 05/01/2026 15:13

Every now and then thread annoys me nearly as much as the bloody Bosworth one. This one is very close to that list.

I found myself bored of pasta completely a while ago and a few times made a ragu and cheese sauce which I then layered on top of very crispy new potatoes roasted with rosemary and garlic, then gave it a quick grill. It was really lovely.

ManyPigeons · 05/01/2026 15:12

What do you need potatoes for with lasagne? They don’t go in there…

just mix pasta with the ragu and top with the bechamel and bake it.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 05/01/2026 15:11

Just chuck the mince over the potatoes and call them dirty spuds

Turn the pan back on?

Have you ever cooked anything before?

faial · 05/01/2026 15:10

Just mash the spuds (use the microwave or oven to warm them if they're too cold now) and have them with the mince mixture you've made. You don't need pasta AND potatoes in the same meal, that's far too much carbohydrate.

Lmnop22 · 05/01/2026 15:09

Send your DH or DS to the shop?

pouletvous · 05/01/2026 15:06

Am i thr only one wondering why you have boiled the spuds before the lasagne is in the oven?

no I’ve asked similar. OP is lamenting the spuds being so soggy and cold like that wasn’t always going to happen ? 😭

MissDoubleU · 05/01/2026 15:07

Sprinkling cheese on top of a lasagne doesn’t stop it being bechamel. A cheese sauce has cheese mixed into it. The cheese is incorporated into the sauce itself. What PP describes is a bechamel used to top the lasagne and a final layer of grated cheese which does not mix into the sauce, but melts/crusts on top.

Thats like saying the bechamel stops being a bechamel when you layer it on top of the mince sauce, because it’s now contaminated with mince and tomato’s.

You and the post you have quoted are agreeing with each other. Not sure why you have quoted. The OP clearly said she adds cheese to the bechemel as well as on top. So your quoted PP is right as you are.

No, OP has clarified that she puts cheese into the sauce as well as on top. Heathen.

um… I think you’re confused. The OP has made a cheese sauce. She put cheese into the sauce and melted it in, as a cheese sauce. Not a bechamel. Exactly as you’ve described so I’m really not sure what your point is?

Anonanonanonagain · 05/01/2026 15:08

MissDoubleU · 05/01/2026 15:03

You do realise lasagne is a pasta dish, don’t you? 😂

And it is THE pasta bake, the original one.

MissDoubleU · 05/01/2026 15:07

Bobiverse · 05/01/2026 15:04

That’s still not lasagne. Lasagne is made with bechamel sauce. You’re making cheese sauce. They are different things.

I add loads of stuff to food which “shouldn’t” go in because we like it that way, but at least I know I’m doing it and I know what changes I’m making.
Make what you want but know the difference. You haven’t made bechamel white sauce. You’ve made cheese sauce. Lasagne doesn’t have cheese sauce so that’s something your family does differently because of taste preference.

Use layers of sliced potatoes and call it moussaka

Are they raw?
