Should the person who earns more pay more for joint holiday friends not partners

Just that really.

2 friends going on holiday, should the person who earns more pay more say 75 ler cent of holiday cost, neither person wealthy, but one is part time and the other is full time so earns more.

Welcome thoughts as I am unsure.

Pay for themselves, if they can't afford then don't go.

Eviebeans · 04/01/2026 17:49

50/50 on cost of holiday and each provide own spending money

OrigamiOwls · 04/01/2026 17:48

Each should pay their share. Why should the full timer subsidise the part timer?

CinnamonBuns67 · 04/01/2026 17:48

Absolutely not. Not the higher earners problem the other person doesn't earn as much. They should pay their equal share of the holiday.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 04/01/2026 17:48

Absolutely not! My friend earns more than me and this thought would never enter my head. I’m the holiday organiser so she very generously will treat me to lunch, a bottle of something etc. which I think is lovely.

On the flip side I’ve paid for a friend’s flight before as she was struggling and we both really wanted to go on holiday. But it wasn’t expected.

Helplessandheartbroke · 04/01/2026 17:48

No

ConnieHeart · 04/01/2026 17:48

No

WarmGreyHare · 04/01/2026 17:47

No,
Edited to add, they definitely shouldn't be expected to. But if the wealthier person wants to go on a more expensive trip/nicer accomodation etc that they know they other person couldn't do then they might offer to pay the difference if they really want to go together.

TheCurious0range · 04/01/2026 17:47

It would depend. I go on a long weekend with old uni friends once a year, I want my own bedroom and I'm happy to pay extra for that, I know others earn less than I do and are happy to pay less and share beds/sleep on sofas so I'm happy to pay the difference between accommodation types as is another member of the group

Not often you get 100% agreement on AIBU.

What's the context ?

noidea69 · 04/01/2026 17:47

HappyFace2025 · 04/01/2026 17:46

I'm guessing the poorer friend!

she's the rich friend who has been asked by poor friend to pay more i reckon.

Whyherewego · 04/01/2026 17:47

I've always earned more than my uni and school friends. In this situation, We would split the holiday costs evenly like hotel, flights etc but I might buy more rounds of drinks or pay for the majority of a meal by generous "rounding" so yhat it kind of worked iut that I paid a good bit more.

TessSaysYes · 04/01/2026 17:47

I don't think so

Yes, I think so.

noidea69 · 04/01/2026 17:46

Best thing i've read on this site in a while this.

Only way better off friend would pay more is if they are trying to shag the poor friend.

HappyFace2025 · 04/01/2026 17:46

murasaki · 04/01/2026 17:45

Which one are you?

I'm guessing the poorer friend!

ChavsAreReal · 04/01/2026 17:45

No. Is there some context you're not telling us?

murasaki · 04/01/2026 17:45

Which one are you?

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 04/01/2026 17:45

Another vote for no here.

Pancakeflipper · 04/01/2026 17:44

No.
Unless the person who earns more is totally desperate to go to a particular destination and really wants the friend to join them. Maybe they owe the friend a huge favour? Otherwise you go where both can afford.

Hufflebuffs · 04/01/2026 17:44

i am really intrigued why you are asking. It’s an obvious no to
me.

Iloveacurry · 04/01/2026 17:44

No. Perhaps book a cheaper holiday that both can afford. A friend is under no obligation to sub another friend …

Idontjetwashthefucker · 04/01/2026 17:44

Absofuckinglutely not

caringcarer · 04/01/2026 17:43

Each pays their own way of friends.

momahoho1 · 04/01/2026 17:42

No should about it. Pay equally unless the higher earner is badgering the lower to go and book a higher cost accommodation and is offering, that’s different
