Should the person who earns more pay more for joint holiday friends not partners

Just that really.

2 friends going on holiday, should the person who earns more pay more say 75 ler cent of holiday cost, neither person wealthy, but one is part time and the other is full time so earns more.

Welcome thoughts as I am unsure.

My first thought was no and the lower earnee should not suggest it. However it can cost almost as much for 1 person to go on a holiday solo as for two people, certainly on a package holiday. In thiscase if the higher earner was going to go alone anyway but fancied company it might make sense for them to offer this arrangement to their friend.

The fact the OP hasn’t been back suggests she is the CF.

To be fair she did only post 21 minutes before your response.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 04/01/2026 17:58

Come on OP, don’t leave us hanging

justmyluck1234 · 04/01/2026 17:58

50/50 regardless of earnings

GreenPoms · 04/01/2026 17:57

The fact the OP hasn’t been back suggests she is the CF.

shuggles · 04/01/2026 17:55

Ignore, I can't read.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 04/01/2026 17:55

Absolutely not. I holiday with a friend who is muchhhh richer then I am, we split everything fairly - she makes allowances for my budget in her expectations and I make sure to come with enough money.

She saves the week on a private island for the richer friends 😂

TwistedWonder · 04/01/2026 17:55

I went on holiday this year with someone who thought because I earn more than her and I recently got my divorce settlement (my share of the house equity) that she wouldn’t take enough spending money and that I should make up her shortfall - she’s mortgage feee btw

Needless to say I won’t he going away with her again - despite her already suggesting it

arethereanyleftatall · 04/01/2026 17:55

Lol, of course not!!

Happyjoe · 04/01/2026 17:52

Nope.
Either afford to go on holiday or can't. It's that simple.

L0bstersLass · 04/01/2026 17:52

No. The holiday chosen should be affordable by both parties.
If the higher earner wants to treat their friend to a round of drinks or a meal out once while they're away then that's up to them, but they should not be paying a higher proportion of the basic cost of the holiday.

SoOriginal · 04/01/2026 17:51

Never

noidea69 · 04/01/2026 17:47

she's the rich friend who has been asked by poor friend to pay more i reckon.

Hadn't considered that!

Anonymouseposter · 04/01/2026 17:51

Definitely not.

SplishSplash123 · 04/01/2026 17:51

No

helpfulperson · 04/01/2026 17:51

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 04/01/2026 17:39

Nope.

Exception if one person wants to stay somewhere more luxurious and voluntarily makes upgrades and treats their friend.

I love a bath and a balcony so will pay supplement for that sometimes.

But generally no, it's 50 50.

Shufflebumnessie · 04/01/2026 17:51

No. If friends are going on holiday then it's 50/50 regardless of financial circumstances.

I think the only times this wouldn't apply was if one of the friends was insistent they had a bedroom and the other person was on a sofa bed in the communal area. Or, if the higher earner wanted a hotel that was out of budget for the other person & the higher earner was happy to cover the difference.

TwistedWonder · 04/01/2026 17:50

Absolutely not. You both pay for yourself

gamerchick · 04/01/2026 17:50

Par timer made a choice to be part time. You don't get to get things cheaper because of it.

Probably better not to go on holiday if one person thinks like this.

TimeForATerf · 04/01/2026 17:50

Absolutely, not.

MyNattyCrow · 04/01/2026 17:50

Why on earth would anyone expect a friend to subsidise their holiday?

it’s not like it’s a partnership where resources are pooled and shared. Expecting your friend to pay for half your holiday because you work PT and therefore earn less is totally ludicrous.

Nourishinghandcream · 04/01/2026 17:50

I once went on holiday with someone who held this (frankly bizarre) opinion, unfortunately they did not announce their decision until we were actually on our way (I was the higher earner in this situation).

Needless to say the friendship did not survive.

landslide51 · 04/01/2026 17:50

Definitely not! Although if one person is very set on something that they know the other can't really afford then they might offer to pay towards it.

YorkiesForAll · 04/01/2026 17:49

No way!

tinytemper66 · 04/01/2026 17:49

Absolutely not. I earn more than my two friends but we split the bill 3 ways.
