Should the person who earns more pay more for joint holiday friends not partners

Just that really.

2 friends going on holiday, should the person who earns more pay more say 75 ler cent of holiday cost, neither person wealthy, but one is part time and the other is full time so earns more.

Welcome thoughts as I am unsure.

Just two friends who are not living together, not romantic partners? One person earns more than the other? OP wants to know if the person with more money should pay more? For real?

OP, please tell me you're not the cheeky fucker that thinks your friend owes you a holiday? F. F. S. 🤦‍♀️🙄
If I were the wealthier friend I would drop you like a hot potato.
If you cannot afford to go then stay home.

TitsInAbsentia · 04/01/2026 20:54

I'm really hoping OP is the full time worker and not a CF...

No, you each pay your own way.

Maybebaby10 · 04/01/2026 20:42

Nope

Thanks everyone

Neither is a CF really in the friendship, part timer saving for something specific so little spare cash, full timer thinking like someone upthread said that the cost difference between 1 or 2 going on this package holiday not a huge amount but not wanting to ruin the friendship or set expectations for the future.

Part timer is definately a CF….they want to save for something else…great…don’t go on holiday…fucking piss taker

Wreckinball · 04/01/2026 20:38

If you can’t afford it you can’t go - simple- applies to all finance

Cat1504 · 04/01/2026 20:38

No

No of course not.

Bloozie · 04/01/2026 20:31

No. You go halves.

Singleoldermum · 04/01/2026 20:31

Not for friends, no. You each decide what you can afford to budget and you either book a holiday together within both your budgets, or you find another holiday pal.

For partners it might be different depending on the understanding between the two people for financial splits within the relationship.

Nn9011 · 04/01/2026 20:30

It depends, if the higher earner is willing to go to location/hotel etc within the budget of lower earner then no.
If they are unwilling but also not accepting of the lower earner not going on the holiday then yes.
If it's a case that lower earner can't afford any holiday without it then whilst it's a nice thing to do, it shouldn't be an expectation.

WanderleyWagon · 04/01/2026 20:28

No, both people should agree on a holiday which is within both their budgets.

Ritaskitchen · 04/01/2026 20:27

Part of being an adult is living to your means.

cityanalyst678 · 04/01/2026 20:27

My friend is a CEO of a large company, earning millions. When we meet I always insist on paying my way.

Horses7 · 04/01/2026 20:26

Ha ha ha 🤣

Eyeshadow · 04/01/2026 20:26

I’d love to work PT and have my FT working friend pay for me - only joking I’d never be that much of a CF.

They both pay the same amount.
PT CF obviously can’t afford it so they can’t go.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 04/01/2026 20:24

Absolutely not. I’ve been the person with little money and I just politely decline an invitation if I cannot afford it.

Shedeboodinia · 04/01/2026 20:21

No. Choose a holiday you can both afford. Unless one person is insisting on a more expensive room for example. Then if they are insisting and want to cover the additional cost thats up to them.

SouthernNights59 · 04/01/2026 20:21

Definitely not! I'm the person working less hours can't afford the holiday then they shouldn't be going, it's certainly not up to the other person to subsidise them.

Whatwerewetalkingabout · 04/01/2026 20:19

I would say this is only acceptable if the wealthier person wanted to upgrade the holiday and wanted to go somewhere outside the part timers budget. So if the part timer was thinking static caravan in Wales for a long weekend but wealthy friend was pushing 5 star abroad for a week maybe they should chuck a bit more in? Who's idea was the holiday and who set the budget?

I understand heavily subsidising a romantic partner but not a friend (although I personally would subsidise a friend if I wanted a holiday upgrade out of their budget). You should really only go somewhere you can both comfortably afford. Xx

Middlemarch123 · 04/01/2026 20:19

When I had less money, and better off friends planned weekends away, even meals out, I would decline if I couldn’t pay my way. It’s really as simple as that.

No.

I thought this post was going to be about a couple, which is a different situation.

But why should someone cover their friends costs just because their friend works part time?

MrsPerfect12 · 04/01/2026 20:15

50/50 unless the person is suggesting somewhere that is unaffordable to the lower earner.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 04/01/2026 20:12

Not even in the world of MN should the full time worker sub the part timer.

Thehop · 04/01/2026 20:09

Not for friends no
