...To Think There Is Male Shopping Brain...?

AlteFrau · 03/01/2026 09:13

Spouse said he'd do the shoppipng we needed yesterday, to stock up after the holiday break.

He went to the local High Street a few minutes away, and spent an hour shopping. On his return he said he'd been to two supermarkets, the two Asian run grocery shops and the chemists.

What he came back with
400 g cumin seed
1 jar mango pickle
4 bottles beer
2 toothbrush heads in contrasting colours - because the old ones were the same colour
Fancy little tomatoes
Sliced white sourdough

What he didn't get
Butter
Bananas
Frozen Peas
Bacon
Cheese
Milk

Because it's a bloke whose not getting at right, it's a male husband............................

He is an adult. He should be able to do simple tasks like completing a shopping list. He doesn't have a mental disorder FGS.

BeatrizBoniface · 05/01/2026 05:37

he can feed himself when required
That's a relief! 😁

JohnBullshit · 05/01/2026 00:27

It's about individuals, not gender. I hate letting DH go shopping unsupervised. He can follow a list, obviously. What he can't do is think on his feet about items that aren't in stock. If I send DS instead, he'll know that without aubergines we can't have parmigiana, and will buy other ingredients to make a different dish. DH doesn't cook, or rather he doesn't cook anything good. He can feed himself when required.

No, just ‘your spouse’s shopping brain’. My DH sorts the household shopping every week.

Same here. DH is always the one who knows if we are getting low on tea bags, exactly how much milk is left etc.

men are from mars - thats about it

I bet he doesn't do this at work? Unless he has a recognised disorder he is doing this because it will annoy you or he doesn't see the issue with you having to go out to actually complete what is a very simple task. Why are you making it a gender based issue? Does he struggle to perform self care routines also? I suspect not.

Did he take a list and forget to refer to it? I'd have blown my stack if DH went to the shops and didn't get the basics. Fortunately he manages to shop competently even without a list (I need it more tbh because I can't keep that many items in mind and something always drops off the mental list). What's his defence?

Blown your stack? He must be shit scared of you

Christ that’s very combative for the crime of forgetting the bananas

Male shopping brain is the same as female driving brain.

A lazy stereotype.

You get it, the classic look. But once buy for life. Charity shops are the best bet my wife got a lovely jacket for £10 last week simple top jeans and she looks like a winner at Ascot

Now you’re over-egging the pudding.

BeatrizBoniface · 03/01/2026 09:45

No. Just yours. Mine does all the shopping because he does all the cooking.
Maybe next time give him a list.

Same. My contribution is adding yummy snacks to the list 🤣

Yes, DH does all the grocery shopping here. I have a bad habit of not buying anything if I go food shopping when I'm not hungry.

brunettemic · 03/01/2026 23:15

Seems like a your DH issue. Mine does all the food shopping, plans the meals, cooks the meals.
Now if I was doing the shopping I can safely say it would take multiple trips out to get the things I forget because I’m distracted by all the offers and shiny packets, I’m basically a magpie in human form.

Before we were distracted by children-wrangling, I loved going clothes-shopping with dh. He approached it with objective methodicality. As long as we had a clear objective. Dh is not a random browser. 90% of the time we returned home with exactly what I needed.

Anyway, I like tweed, pearls, jeans and big hats. And I wear them (well, I would, if I had any tweed) - though not all at the same time!

Mine keeps buying multiples of the same thing. Next week he’ll buy the same and I’ll open the cupboard with 3 tins of Quality Street and 4 large bags of Doritos still unopened wtf!

InterestedDad37 · 03/01/2026 20:58

It's your DH...
I'm a top notch shopper 👌😀 Never run short of essentials, cupboards highly organised 👍 I'm great at clothes shopping too 😂 (but I'm rubbish at DIY)

NotAnotherScarf · 03/01/2026 16:12

What there's another like me! You poor woman! Mind you I bet he doesn't whinge as much as me even though I know I should I put it on the list.

Hey, I’m not complaining. Methodical is good!

EveningSpread · 03/01/2026 19:19

My DP does the food shopping and the monthly Tesco online shop. Yours is just not attuned to what’s in the fridge or not.

You've married a boy. There's a lot of it about. Sorry.

You learn to work round it, or you retrain your spouse, or you make alternative life arrangements. (sigh)

ToadRage · 03/01/2026 19:16

You need to give him a list. I use an app called listonic, I make the list then share it with my husband. He has been trained to shopping by himself.

Ghostmartin · 03/01/2026 19:05

It's like that Fast Show sketch where the husband goes shopping and returns with completely random items. Except that was a comedy sketch and meant to be funny.

This behaviour is not endearing or "ooh what's he like".

BeatrizBoniface · 03/01/2026 18:46

Jack80 · 03/01/2026 18:44

I think some men just can't shop, my husband does the majority of the shopping and we both forget things we haven't put on the list.

It's quite basic, really. I've no idea why "some men can't shop".
If you have a list, tick the items off as you buy them.
Before you leave the house, check the cupboards and fridge for what you need.
