Is it the begining of the end for Weight loss injections?

Just watched a report on BBC news, they did an item on a woman who had type 2 diabetes and was prescribed Mounjaro, doctors were impressed she managed to come off insulin within a month. She had some weightloss and now goes to the gym regularly.

Her doctor admitted that there was widespread concern in the medical field that people who were buying it privately for cosmetic reasons not for medical reasons could face some consequences in the future such as muscle growth and bone degeneration and lack of nutrition - they simply don't have this data at present.

Feel like this is going to be big news in the foreseeable future.

That's nice for him. I assume that he's on the committee who analyse the actual data and make decisions based on that?

You assume correct.

I agree - admittedly I don’t need wli but I have been very overweight in the past and would have probably snapped them up at the time - early to mid twenties I fried every fad diet, pharmacy only shakes, everything (heartbreak diet solved the issue in the end haha) BUT I do think they are poorly regulated/controlled…… people are injecting insulin when they are not diabetic! That’s so dangerous! (I work in healthcare and have seen devastating effects and death from incorrect insulin management for people that actually are diabetic). Then again, I smoke and ecig and I’m sure in years to come there will be consequences with that.

It’s a bit concerning that you work in healthcare and think WLI are insulin. They absolutely are not and you shouldn’t be saying otherwise. Very dangerous.

lol as if you work in health care coming away with 💩 like this.

if you do indeed work in health care, I assume you patrol the car parking or take the bins out?

You do realise that people taking the WLI do actually eat as well and shock horror exercise effectively.

It’s a well known side effect that they cause tiredness, FFS. We’re not talking in absolutes here. These are new drugs.

Scarlettpixie · 02/01/2026 19:31

The level of ignorance on this topic from people with something to say about it is mind blowing.

OP why after reading an article saying how well someone was doing after taking MJ makes you think you think the fact that it may have a detrimental impact on the health of people taking it for cosmetic reasons is the beginning of the end? I don't get it. The vast majority of people taking it are those with genuine need who are being properly prescribed and are seeing real life changing improvements.

I have a good friend who is a senior medic, working in endocrinology- no idea how related this field is but I’m guessing at least a bit.

He maintains that WLIs are great for those who are morbidly obese and the danger of whose co-morbidities outweigh the unknown of WLIs.

However for people who only have a couple of stone to lose it could be cumulatively detrimental. The loss of muscle tone, bone density and who knows what else because we just don’t know yet, outweigh the health benefits of weighing less.

Personally I’d love to be 3 stone lighter but I’m aware that WLIs are likely to take away my appetite and consequently my ability to exercise regularly oreffectively. And that’s the reason I won’t bother. At 52 health is more important than appearance to me.

That's nice for him. I assume that he's on the committee who analyse the actual data and make decisions based on that?

I am concerned about the long term implications of these drugs. I agree they are a great tool and work really well for a lot of people, but I don't agree thay they should be available over the Internet and from online pharmacies. They are a medical drug and they should be monitored by a doctor, weather that be the NHS or private.

And yes I'm aware that would make them more expensive then they are now.

They are monitored by doctors. Doctors are the only ones who can prescribe them.

This is exactly what im taking about benefits versus risk

It's the beginning of the end, but only in the sense that the injections will be replaced by pills this year. One brand has already been approved by the FDA, and another is expected to be within 6 months.

Came here to say this. It's only the beginning for weight loss medications.

Already here. I've just been prescribed with the tablets for Type II Diabetes.

(Feeling very ambivalent about it.)

ThePeachHiker · 02/01/2026 19:21

You know if you’re thinner then it’s easy to exercise to build muscle and improve bone density. My family members who are on them appear to be exercising regularly as they feel more comfortable and confident to do so.

Arraminta · 02/01/2026 19:20

Only 2 days into the New Year and already I'm depressed again how ignorant and hard of thinking too many people are.

Wise up!!!!
I've lost 6 stone in MJ. Reversed diabetes, high BP, potential heart disease, never felt as good as info right now.
Scaremongering doesn't work, my muscles are great, and my autoimmune disease has completely reversed.

Yep, I wasnt exoecting it to reduce autoimmune sympotoms and inflamation. A nice wee extra bonus.

It's like all medication. It has side effects and those risk side effects need to be balanced with the therapeutic effect.

This is a WLI criticism thread. Actual research and proved facts not welcome.

You may work in healthcare but you clearly have NO clue at all about weight loss injections …
it is not insulin !!!!
I can’t arsed to tell u what it actually is - educate yourself before u consider yourself in a position to comment !

chelle who 'works in health care' and is talking bollocks or just confused.
I use insulin [type 1] but not wli, don't need it.

If you are "concerned" dont take them. Simple.
Are you cobcerned about paracetamol use as well? Because there are more hospital admissions for that than for GLPs

Sameshitedifferentday · 02/01/2026 19:11

WLI are not insulin so I am confused why someone working in health care is mentioning the impact of non-diabetics injecting insulin.

Scary isn't it? I presume they aren't a HCP though as that would be even worse.

Schoolchoicesucks · 02/01/2026 19:10

Did the report OP watched raise concerns about effects on the muscles or bones of the person who had reversed their diabetes?

WLI are not insulin so I am confused why someone working in health care is mentioning the impact of non-diabetics injecting insulin.

There may well be some adverse long term health issues that we don't yet know about. But the medical evidence is that doctors and researchers believe the positive impacts outweigh the potential risks for those who meet the criteria for prescription - those who are obese and/or overweight with a co-morbid health condition.

Clefable · 02/01/2026 19:10

Christ alive. Not another one. The amount of ignorance and lack of critical thinking on here and elsewhere is depressing.

Ukefluke · 02/01/2026 19:08

TheRealMagic · 02/01/2026 18:56

What are you on about? You watched a report about a WLI success story and from that concluded that they are actually a terrible thing that will soon be stopped? Do you normally struggle with comprehension?

Cue, the fake concern......

It's not insulin... I think if you don't know anything about them that's fine but maybe reserve judgement?
