Is it the begining of the end for Weight loss injections?

Just watched a report on BBC news, they did an item on a woman who had type 2 diabetes and was prescribed Mounjaro, doctors were impressed she managed to come off insulin within a month. She had some weightloss and now goes to the gym regularly.

Her doctor admitted that there was widespread concern in the medical field that people who were buying it privately for cosmetic reasons not for medical reasons could face some consequences in the future such as muscle growth and bone degeneration and lack of nutrition - they simply don't have this data at present.

Feel like this is going to be big news in the foreseeable future.

WLIs are revolutionising the treatment of obesity and obesity-related conditions such as diabetes. The only issue is around unregulated use which is the same as any other medication.

I suspect as they become more widely available on the NHS, the market for private treatment will shrink rapidly and the companies currently pushing them hard will lose interest as there won’t be enough profit to make it worthwhile. Once they are not being aggressively marketed, inappropriate use is likely to be less of an issue.

This class of drugs has been around for years so it’s highly unlikely that there is going to be any thalidomide-style side effect disaster waiting around the corner. Sorry to disappoint you, OP, but maybe you should instead focus your thoughts on why you REALLY feel this way about WLIs and what that says about you as a person.

This!
These drugs have been around for a long time.

Well committing to actual lifestyle change is surely better than injecting my self with substances that have not been looked at long term.

I was on a low carb, 1200 calorie per day weight loss regime for two years with no actual weight loss. You wrongly assume that all people who are overweight have a shit diet and don’t do any exercise. That really isn’t the case. After 20 years of high cholesterol (even when I was a slim size 8), it took less than six weeks of Mounjaro to get it under control. I had Seborrheic Dermatitis so bad that my dermotologist said that it looked like I had been burned. Six years of hell with it and at some points, I don’t want to leave my house. Completely under control now thanks to Mounjaro. The plantar fasciitis that I had for three years, completely gone. My body wasn’t functioning properly and now it is, thanks to this drug.

I agree. Also, I feel it is not researched enough at all.

They currently sell WLI over the counter to nearly everyone over a certain weight

I took Mounjaro for six months. It made me so severely sick. I had to stop.

I'm not saying that there is something inherently wrong with mounjaro, just that it didnt work with my body.

They should research it more, and not just sell a strong drug to absolutely everyone over a certain weight

Edited

It’s not over the counter though - it requires a prescription.

Agree with you, someone talking sense. Its well known people are wearing numerous clothes and putting weights in their pockets. The medical companies don't care as they are making billions.

I genuinely wish I thought of this. I am extremely overweight but a couple of digits off the required number.

Handy tip.

SilenceInside · 02/01/2026 20:22

@MyCatStoleSausages notice I said “legitimate”. Those people are illegally accessing POM. Individual pharmacies should be sanctioned if they can’t show they have robust processes for checking eligibility. There is not the capacity for physical pharmacies to check the height and weight of people in person and it does not have to be necessary to do that. It can be done remotely with sufficiently robust processes. That is not a reason to restrict access to medication for the vast majority who are legitimately accessing it.

Speaking personally, I would not have gone in person to be weighed and measured, and that would have been an unnecessary barrier to me accessing an appropriate mediation legitimately.

usedtobeaylis · 02/01/2026 20:22

Who could ever have guessed this would turn into yet another thread of people asserting their moral superiority over those who use Mounjaro.

Someone who is 28 stone is morbidly obese. A size 14 is obese for some people, it is for me and I’m the same height as you. I was obese at 21/2 stone overweight and I look bloody shocking in photos when I look back. I’m now a size 10 and I look much better, but I am far from skinny.

The problem is that there are so many morbidly obese people nowadays that many of those who are merely obese live in denial of how big they are because they see themselves as slim in comparison.

Again I don't think Im thin. However, I am absolutely sure that I am not obese.

I am thinner than a lot of people that I work with, I am thinner than a woman I know that plays sport at a high level.

I don't think BMI online calculators are accurate.

Again good for you, but let adults do what they choose for themselves, no one’ says YOU have to take it.

Livelovebehappy · 02/01/2026 20:17

My thoughts exactly. It’s going to be one of those where 5 to 10 years from now, it’s going to become apparent the long term effects on health, and they will be banned for none medical situations. I was thinking about doing it a couple of months ago, but the uncertainty of long term effects on my body/health put me off (I’m very risk adverse!). Same reason why I didn’t have the covid vaccine. The vaccine was thrown together in such a short time, that I just didn’t trust that it was safe long term.

Nannyogganny · 02/01/2026 20:11

I didn't say I was thin. I said I don't think I am obese.

Obese is the highest weight range possible

A size 14 is not obese. Should I be in the same category as someone who is 28 stone?

So tell us about you….are you a fatty who is feeling under pressure as people become thinner around you or are you a thinny who is worried that they will no longer be able to feel superior around the fatties?!!

Can you people not actually read this post?!

Edit - apologies, I assumed if was sarcasm/facetious but on reading it again I’m not sure…

I have. 5 years of maintenance. No kore kids so no more baby weight. I have an eggs and veg for breakfast. And a salad for lunch. And whatever I want for dinner. That is the only regime I now follow. I make sure to walk as much as possible and rarely use my car. Even with three kids

Obesity is a medical condition.

People who aren't overweight shouldn't be taking it, but why should fat people not take it? Literally paying, THEMSELVES, to assist in fixing an issue that affects many health conditions they may have.

How the fuck is that cheating? Just admit, you resent it.

MyCatStoleSausages · 02/01/2026 20:06

SilenceInside · 02/01/2026 20:01

@BeginingoftheendforWLI anyone getting a legitimate private prescription from an online prescriber meets the clinical criteria for the medication. It is not for cosmetic reasons, it’s for health reasons. It’s odd that the doctor in this story apparently raised a concern about something that is nothing to do with peiple being legitimately prescribed WLI. There may be an issue with people acquiring POM illegally for conditions that they don’t have, but that’s not going to affect the legitimate uptake of WLI for those who meet the prescribing criteria.

This isn't true though? I've only read a few threads on WLI here but there have been posters who have said they are 5'2" for instance instead of 5'6" so this pushes their bmi up to whatever is needed to get the drugs. That is lying to meet the criteria. In person prescribing would mean that people can be weighed/measured/monitored properly. Signs of eating disorders discovered faster etc. I don't see why anyone would have a problem with needing to go to in person clinics throughout their weight loss and it would make it safer for everyone which is a good thing.

Boohoo76 · 02/01/2026 20:05

Tattiana · 02/01/2026 19:58

I mean I’m sure there are many people doing it for health reasons but I think in the main it is absolutely about being thin/cosmetic. I know LOADS of people on WLIs who perhaps needed to lost a stone or two, but they certainly weren’t life-threateningly obese.

I was obese at 2 1/2 stone overweight.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 02/01/2026 20:05

Yawn OP.

Another person who doesn't understand WLI and shows faux concern about the future of all wli takers.

People who make posts like this, I believe it's usually someone who's mate/family member has dropped a load of weight after wli's and has been getting positive attention and it pisses them off.

Always the green eyed monster lurking as they think it's 'cheating' and it really gets under their skin 😂.

Posts ALWAYS dressed up as concern.

'Obese' is not that big for some people.

Im a size 14 - 16. Im short 5 foot 3.

If I use a BMI calculator, It calculates me as obese. Therefore, I was able to get Mounjaro

SilenceInside · 02/01/2026 20:04

I am also quite happy that the MHRA is more of an authority on what is appropriate than concerned posters on MN.

BunnyLake · 02/01/2026 20:02

I have heard that if you don’t have diabetes then there could be some reactions from it but I don’t know what they might be. Research the meds before taking is probably the best bet.
