To find January depressing?

Sunnylily · 01/01/2026 21:25

I love December and November as we get ready for the Christmas and the new year.
I reflect about the whole year and get ready for the next year.
But once the new year starts it becomes very depressing for me
Everyone else seems to be coming back fresh and happy to office. Wondering if it's just me who find January more depressing?

Yabu - I like January
Yanbu - January is depressing

But you get to watch the sun rise and set as you are doing it, which is magical. And when you are done, you can sit in the dark.

I'm confused by people who say they just stay in, relax, read, drink hot chocolate etc etc. Don't they have to go to work or school run? Visit aging parents? Get to appointments, grocery shopping and all the other things life brings? All of this is a million times easier in warmth and daylight.

That’s what I was thinking! Sadly we still have school runs, work, club commitments etc. We’re rarely all home in the evenings before 8pm.

I love January. I know I’m in the minority. I like cold, crisp weather, I like being all cosy indoors and lighting the fire. I’m happy that Christmas is behind me - lovely as it is, it’s a lot of work. I love the peace and the freshness of January - a new year is a blank page. Mostly I’m grateful to be here and healthy, in another brand new year.

DrunkenKoala · 02/01/2026 00:25

I also really enjoy Nov and Dec and then beginning of Jan as it’s my DD’s birthday but once I’m past her birthday I’m ready for January, the calmness and not having to think about anything other than normal every day things until mid Feb, by which point I feel like doing things again. I’ve got a belated birthday treat for DD organised for half term and it’s also Shrove Tuesday - love pancakes!
I don’t mind the cold and dark of January but I do get a walk in my local park every morning (part of the school run) which I do think helps keep depressing feeling away.

YANBU. It’s 9 weeks until
msrxh. I’m going to count off those weeks!

Wonderful things about January:
Christmas, and all it's pressure, indulgence and consumerism and excess, is over.
The sun rises and sets at times when you can see it.
Cold walks. I hate the sweatiness of Summer.
Dark evenings when it feels OK to read a book or watch TV, no pressure to be out exercising or socialising.
The promise of Spring.
The days are getting longer.

I find it such a peaceful, hopeful time, of quiet and acceptance. Low spend, low expectations.

Allswellthatendswelll · 01/01/2026 22:54

I like Christmas but I don't mind January. It's still winter so all of the nice winter things we do in December- resting, lighting candles, eating warming meals should still happen. It can be a nice cosy month. Plus it's getting lighter. I find the closing in of November much worse.

It's the weird mentality that we should all start eating salads and running around that makes it shit. We should do the "new year detox" stuff in Spring.

Fixydodah · 01/01/2026 22:54

I don’t mind January. Once that month is over the lighter nights are well on their way. The older I get the less the winter bothers me.

cityanalyst678 · 01/01/2026 22:51

I love January. Less of a rush to get things done, I don’t feel guilty for not keeping up with the gardening and when I come in from work, I can relax more than other months.

Come and have a read of our positive January thread; you may find something to change your mind www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5467566-anyone-else-love-january?page=1

I hate January! It’s dark and cold and usually wet and / or icey and windy. It goes on forever and no one has any money towards the end of the month and i think at least November Christmas is coming and then i like December!

i don’t like February either but at least it’s shorter & the kids get a wee break again from school. Once we get into March i start to feel a bit better as it starts looking brighter again with Spring around the corner.

April we often have some really nice sunny weather & can start to look forward to things like the summer holidays. My kids have summer birthdays too so June, July & August are my favourite months. I find May and September funny “in between” months but kids have a few days off and sometimes we can get a few days away to break them up so all in i can tolerate most months but not January! 1 day down 30 more to go….

I love January! I don’t like November and December with all the ridiculous fuss about Christmas. I breathe a sigh of relief when it’s all over and I can get back to normal. Maybe if people didn’t hype up Christmas so much they wouldn’t have such a ‘crash’ when it’s all over?

I don’t ’hype up’ Christmas, but I do enjoy it and am sad when it’s over. Mid winter festivals were invented for a reason… some light and joy in the middle of the long, dark, cold days. There’s no shame in enjoying a mid winter festival.

ChopstickNovice · 01/01/2026 22:26

I don't love it but find it's what you make it. Plan nice things to enjoy even small things.

clinellwipe · 01/01/2026 22:22

Historically, I have found January utterly miserable for the reasons you’ve said. But my autistic son thrives on routine and therefore I now thrive on routine! He loved Christmas but we’re all desperate for term time to restart and get back into a normal rhythm

Tryingatleast · 01/01/2026 22:21

This morning was bright and dry. That’s all I need!!!

Icecreamhelps · 01/01/2026 22:21

Make of it what you will, but if your lucky there are going to be lots of Januarys in your life. Look forward each day gets longer, spring bulbs are coming through. I'm having a bit of a clear out it's a good time to have a reset.

Coka · 01/01/2026 22:20

I have embraced Januarys crappyness. Less pressure to go out so I stay home and hibernate. I try to focus on rest and reset for the year ahead. Lots of family time at home and less spending. Its now one of my favourite months.

UnhappyHobbit · 01/01/2026 22:18

If you try to make January less depressing, you may change your mind about it. January is only what you make it, just like any other month is.

Dollyfloss · 01/01/2026 22:16

You find JANUARY DEPRESSING?? Wow, hold the front page!!

🤣🤣🤣Only joking op - it’s just that most people would say they find jan/feb the most depressing months I think. I’m googling trips to NY in Feb for something to look forward to.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 01/01/2026 22:15

I'm a big fan of light evenings and for me January has turned the corner getting lighter every day.

RaraRachael · 01/01/2026 22:14

I hate January. It's cold, dark and depressing and so far from nice weather.

There's just not anything good about it.

HumphreysCorner · 01/01/2026 22:14

I don’t like long January and short February but like March onwards.

WaneyEdge · 01/01/2026 22:13

Bloody awful month.

It’s about 25 weeks long and is so depressing. Dark, cold, nothing to look forward to.
