To think this was a bit of an odd gift

Lighthearted, but DSIL gifted us a framed photo of each of her sons this year for christmas.

Just framed, individual school/nursery photos. We’ve put them up in the hallway but every time I walk past them I think it’s a bit odd to have them there, they are our nephews but I don’t have individual photos of any other kids, including my own 😂 But we are more of an artwork family and don’t really have photos up because I think they change so quickly, so maybe that’s why it feels so out of place.

Anyway, as I said lighthearted but

YABU - this is a normal thing to do in most families
YANBU - it’s a bit strange

I think it’s a different thing to say ‘oh, I’ve brought you a school photo of George’ and hand it over and the auntie can put it up on the fridge and giving the aunt a framed photo as a present.

I’ve had both. Usually when there’s a newborn or first school photo it might be framed as a gift, and then future photos are just in a Xmas card for example. But I don’t think it’s that unusual to receive a framed photo gift of a child family member and would gratefully receive it.

My aunt still has my school pics up in her house I’m 37 😂

This site never ceases to amaze me how different people can be, it’s an utterly normal thing to give family members individual photos of children in my family, I have up to date nursery/school photos of all my nieces and nephews and always send on photos of ours (not framed admittedly).

We have also been given the school artwork printed onto household objects gifts because they’ve come in a pack of 4 so we get the spare after the parents and grandparents have been given them. More than happy to praise DN for their artistic skills but we don’t want to display seasonal drawings on objects around our house. It’s not a great gift when it’s not your own child and it’s just a generic drawing they’ve done with the rest of their classmates.

CranberryCandyCane · 01/01/2026 22:49

We have had these as gifts. We love our DN but it feels like quite a cheap gift with not much thought put into when you’re given the smallest size photo that comes in a pack and they’ve been put in basic IKEA frames. Especially when you’ve spent around £100 on their family!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 01/01/2026 22:40

I am child free and over the years I have been given so so many photos of people’s kids some framed some not, I accept, maybe make a polite comment then file them in a cupboard. It would probably look strange DH & I with walls full of school uniformed kids.

Beardedmushrooms · 01/01/2026 22:33

You've just made me think, my sil also does this. Not for Christmas but just generally, sends us photos of her children. They're little faces are often found peeking out of drawers and cupboards and most recently I noticed the glovebox. We also don't have a single family photo on display in our house.

She probably framed them so u would have no excuse! Did she include sticky picture hooks too in the package...

UnhappyHobbit · 01/01/2026 22:31

My DSIL did this to me but with her wedding pictures. I was pleased to see her wedding pictures but I wasn’t keen on them being printed, framed and suggested I use them in to decorate my lounge in my new house. For context, I have no photos up of anyone in my home.

PhantomAfternoonTea · 01/01/2026 22:30

My sister sent copies of my niece and nephew's school photos with my Christmas card, I was really pleased to get them. Not framed though, but I will probably put them in frames myself.

Pigriver · 01/01/2026 22:28

We have a few of DN I think they are now in a cupboard....when we buy school pics we get a set of 3, 1 for us and one for each set of grandparents. For only a few £ more you get bloody loads. I always wonder who buys them and who they give them to!

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 01/01/2026 22:25

Perfectly normal with us

Thingsthatgo · 01/01/2026 21:24

This would not be the norm in my family. I am not really keen on photos of people on the walls - it feels a bit weird to me, but I am not sure why.
Like you say, children change so fast, so you either have a photo that feels out-of-date, or they update the photo every year.

Driftingawaynow · 01/01/2026 21:14

It’s worse than getting an ornament which is already bad enough.

Bluejaysforthewin · 01/01/2026 21:11

It's a pretty standard gift in my family.

Happiestathome · 01/01/2026 21:06

It’s not the done thing in my family. I enjoy seeing the photos we all share on WhatsApp, but I wouldn’t frame and display any.

DurinsBane · 01/01/2026 21:03

It was normal in my family

Yourethebeerthief · 01/01/2026 21:01

It’s more unusual to me that you put them up. I’d have thanked her, removed them from their frames and plonked them in a memory box/file and used the frames for something else if they were nice or charity shopped them if they weren’t.

ChristmasMantleStatue · 01/01/2026 21:00

Yes a bit odd.

One of my cousins has a son and I get a framed picture of him every couple of years or so. Last year I got one of those photo calendars of him.

I mean- I'm fond of my cousin (though not met in person for 7 years or so as we live in different countries) but I have children of my own and do not even have a photo calendar of them.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 01/01/2026 20:59

I would hate to receive this as a present and would never give photos of my kids as a present.

BauhausOfEliott · 01/01/2026 20:55

Sending school photos to aunts, uncles and grandparents would be totally normal in my family. Not framed though - it’s the frame that makes it an awkward gift as the implication is that you’re expected to display it. If it’s just a photo tucked inside a card, you can choose whether you want to display it or not.

@Silverbirchleaf that completely threw me as I am currently watching traitors 😂

Sorry!

Allthesnowallthetime · 01/01/2026 20:36

My aunt and uncle used to send photos of my cousin every year. Not really my thing (I'm not a fan of lots of family photos all over the place).

But some families do like it. So I'd say it's something that some people do appreciate.

junebirthdaygirl · 01/01/2026 20:31

I wouldn't mind getting the pictures but would pop them standing on a side table or something but not put them permanently on the wall..too much! Some of my nieces live abroad and their parents would have sent us pictures over the years buts that's different as we rarely got to see them. Also we pop up pictures of our own kids with their cousins but l would change these around regularly. If they are up in the hall they may be insulted if you ever take them down.

Bilingualistic · 01/01/2026 20:31

Thanks everyone, thought it would be a split! Maybe I need to just pop them on a bookshelf instead, maybe it’s the hallway that’s throwing me 😂

Also please don’t get me wrong, we have our wedding photos up and a few family photos, we’ve just never been gifted individual photos of our neices/newphews before. Maybe I need to do a gallery wall as someone else has done, I like that idea.
