80's although very much depends on the individual. I know some very spritely 80 year olds!

BugOnARugDrinkingTeaFromAMug · 10/09/2026 17:47

I think 70 for dying young, over that it can still be younger than expected but not young as such.

givemesteel · 10/09/2026 15:59

It depends. My dad is 84 and he's in great health so I'd be in shock if he died now though technically it wouldn't be befire his time.

My aunt is 79 and hasn't looked after herself, I've been surprised she's still here for quite some years.

Why has this thread been bumped up (today) after 8 months of no posts?

ZOMBIE THREAD!

Average lifespan is around 80, but average healthy life span is only 60 apparently. I guess before 60 is young.

Savvysix1984 · 10/09/2026 07:12

about 70, but I know very ‘young’ 70 year olds like my parents who have busy social lives, good health, go on holiday 5-6 times a year and can still run after grandkids. I know others who look 80 with chronic conditions and poor mobility who just present as very old.

Spidey66 · 10/09/2026 07:12

My dad died at 56 which was definitely young. My mum died at 67 which now I’m 60 seems young. I’d say if someone gets to 80+ they’ve had a good innings.

User3353821614 · 10/09/2026 07:06

I work in probate and I’d say 80. We see more and more people making it to their very late 80s and 90s.

My father died at 46 as well, and my grandfather (his father) died at 86 last year.

Edited

I’m sorry @TiagoCarvalhoits so young my dad was 46 too. My FIL is turning 80 this year and it doesn’t feel old at all. Although I would say he has aged more these last two years. My mum is 64 and about to enter her second battle with cancer. My gran was 64 when she died and that was 30 years ago and it felt young then and I was a child.

Goatsarebest · 10/09/2026 06:51

3 score and 10 is the biblical context. So below 70 would be considered young.

EsmeSusanOgg · 10/09/2026 06:40

75+ but you hope for 80+

I am 17 in my head. What is age? Oh and you are not very pleasant.

Why on earth would you want to be 17 in your head and not have the wisdom and confidence that comes with maturity? I'm 51 in my body and mind and that's a good thing AFAIC.

KC2007 · 10/09/2026 03:30

Dying in your 60s is far too soon so I would say 75 onwards.

TiagoCarvalho · 10/09/2026 03:04

My father died at 46 as well, and my grandfather (his father) died at 86 last year.

Livpool · 12/01/2026 13:22

I’d say 80. My dad died when was 73 and that was too soon

HeadyLamarr · 12/01/2026 12:47

Dying young - under 50
Dying younger than expected - under 75

Personally it will be good going to reach 70. I made some very poor lifestyle choices in my younger years.

BeFairOliveBear · 12/01/2026 12:47

I'd say under 70 is young to die.

cadburyegg · 12/01/2026 12:37

80+

So what do you suggest that we do about it - can we make ourselves un-old. I would have thought it is a mental thing. But please, do tell me how I can do something about it so the likes of you can stop insulting people.

How have I insulted you? All I’ve said is biologically 65+ isn’t young. And nobody on this thread is suggesting there is anything anyone can do about biologically ageing - it happens to all of us!

To remind you, the thread title is

To ask what age you would say is no longer dying young?

The rest of us are answering that question regardless of our own ages!

66 and this thread is depressing me 🤔

I will be 70 this year and am hoping to be really really old when I die.😁

Flibberteegibbet · 10/01/2026 02:03

I was 29 when my dad passed away at 67. I felt way too young to lose him, particularly as I was 12 weeks pregnant with my only child. My mother has been on her own since and has struggled ever since. I don’t think there’s ever a good time to lose anyone even if you think they’ve lived a long life, there is always something more they could have done

Gut says 70.

But 65+ isn't "young"

Edited

65 isn't young but it's young to die.

RecordBreakers · 09/01/2026 19:40

I also think, psychologically, there is an element of the 'stage of life' the people left behind are.

If your parent dies aged 65 - 68 and you are 28 - 32 and that means you won't have your parent there at your wedding, or they will never meet their grandchild, it seems sadder somehow than a parent of the same age dying when the adult child is aged 40 and might have dc in their teens themself.

I know it doesn't change how much 'too young' the person who dies is, but I think it makes me think how sad it is, differently.
