To think the London NYE fireworks were an excellent FU to Farage and Tommy Ten Names?

The NYE fireworks always get me a bit emotional but this year I think it was up there with the 2020 covid ones. The message was beautiful and ran through the whole thing. The way they got the EU stars in, the dig at the mini roundabout painters and flag hangers.
I’ve lived in London my whole adult life and I felt the display reflected it perfectly.

What was politicised about it? How is a message of togetherness and inclusivity political? (Maybe the EU stars, but it was just a clever way of depicting “Europe” on a circular background…)

I didn’t see it but how can you claim it was both a FU to Farage AND non-political? Either you think it sent a political message to Reform or you think it didn’t.

selfloveandselfrespect · 01/01/2026 22:20

Let's face it, fireworks are pretty boring after a while. There's only so much swirling Catherine wheels they can justify - so we enjoyed the Wicked bits for example as my daughter and I had just returned from seeing the film. We all watched the display on tv then went to bed. Didn't think it was that deep xx

Why does there have to be a message rammed down throats? It's just fucking fireworks

Who is ramming anything? It’s just fireworks.

Okiedokie123 · 01/01/2026 22:02

@cardibach no I havent watched it tbh (I presume its on BBC? I havent got a tv licence) but other people on this thread mentioned "inclusivity" so I was wondering whether the fireworks were "lets all love each other regardless of ethnicity/race/colour/creed" or also included a trans inclusivity message - it seems not which is pleasing to my ears.

Okiedokie123 · 01/01/2026 21:58

Oooops the image I tried to post didnt upload - black background, white text that says "Woman, noun. Adult Human Female"

Or as @Yesitisnotthatitbe dont politicise a fireworks event. There is no need.

And which flag would represent those women? 🙄

Why would we need a flag? Oh I think I get what you mean now (having not seen the fireworks display) - did it have the baby blue and pink flag?
This would be rather tricky in fireworks lol but its the most apt. Or alternatively dont make women feel excluded by including men in womens spaces.

@Dollybantree

You know Khan is totally corrupt right?

Can you provide a reliable source for that allegation? Thanks!

In part, estimates vary because they include different groups. Some include asylum seekers or children born in the UK to unauthorised migrant parents, while others do not. However, all figures are highly uncertain and have large margins of error – meaning that all estimates provided below should be treated with caution.

In other words, nobody knows because all figures are estimates and different estimates count differently.

Unauthorised migration in the UK - Migration Observatory

This briefing examines irregular migration – also called ‘illegal immigration’ – in the UK, including the difficulties in defining and measuring it, and evidence on its nature and scale.

We don’t really have a figure for illegal immigration because those people don’t let the authorities know they are still here/have arrived.
Did you mean asylum seekers?

Edited

@Lamington posted that so-called illegal immigration had roughly halved under Labour.

I asked if he/she had a source for that.

Perhaps when that happens, it will become clear exactly what was meant.

BadLad · 01/01/2026 21:29

Thanks. Could you highlight where your link says that illegal immigration has roughly halved under Labour?

This link says that “irregular arrivals” are actually up in the year ending March 2025, compared to the previous year. Admittedly that had three months of Tory rule, but it was the best source I could find.

If the pp means irregular arrivals end of year was in the headlines today, it’s up on last year, definitely not halved.

So not about raising concerns about so cslled "illegal immigration" (which has roughly halved under labour)

Do you have a source for that?

I don’t think it has halved for illegal immigration.

Such a pity that London can't have a firework display without it being used to force-feed people a left wing political agenda.

It should just be fireworks with no cringe-making voice-over to convey the official party line. It's BS and people have had enough of it.

Obviously people haven’t. There are plenty of people who enjoyed it immensely. All the people I saw watching it seemed to be having a very good time.

So you are confirming you think being nice to each other, being inclusive and being a part of international politics is a left wing agenda?
Weird.

"Operation Raise the Colours, a UK-wide campaign that began in August 2025, aims to promote national pride by displaying the Union Flag, the Saint George’s Cross, and the flags of the other UK constituent nations in public spaces. Organisers claim the movement is a patriotic effort to restore civic pride and unity, with some groups stating their goal is to "cover every town, city and village in the UK with the colours that remind us who we are and what we share"."

So not about raising concerns about so cslled "illegal immigration" (which has roughly halved under labour) and hotels for asylum seekers (which labour are stopping) then?
Or are the organisers lying about their true motives?

@Dappy777 I’m not sure if you missed my post, but you haven’t told me what you and the American/Canadian people thought the U.K. has become. I’m curious.

My DH and I commented on this when we watched the NYE fireworks at midnight (on the tv). It’s not the time and place, and it felt like propaganda, especially the bit about mums of a specific religion saying ‘merry Christmas’ as an example of what London is about. I thought that was an odd statement and directed at making a political point.

2025 was a shocking year for terrorists of a particular religion committing atrocities in the UK and Bondi, and Christians being murdered in Africa. The comments in the fireworks felt flippant to me, kind of a minimisation of the concerns much of the public have regarding hatred and extremism coming from a particular religion. And the flags were an attempt to dismiss or minimise the flag protests which are aimed at raising concerns regarding migration, particularly illegal migration and the use of hotels for asylum seekers.

I know I’m overthinking this all a bit, but in the context of the year we had in 2025 if did feel like pointed virtue signaling and a kind of telling off directed at those in the UK with concerns about religious extremism, problems with assimilation and the use of flags as a protest against too much migration or illegal migration.

I didn’t like the overlays either, but otherwise loved everything else about the fireworks.

London is a major international city. People have been suffering from low-level crime (pickpocketing, mugging, scamming) for centuries, and blaming it all on “foreigners” for just as long. All major cities have crime problems, locals who resent diversity, violence and social problems, and they always have had. Just as there have always been cynical super-rich grifters like Farage ready to exploit the hard of thinking and channel their prejudice and discontentment into anger and division. It’s great to see a display of unity and positivity to counter all that nonsense.

Year on year they have a diversity theme so nothing new there. I thought it was awful, the"special effects" were hideous and blatantly there so Disney could use it to advertise Wicked, no drones but instead excessive fireworks (paid in part by Disneys revenue) and where was the nod to Lando Norris?

Wicked is not a Disney production 😂

ZoeCM · 01/01/2026 20:44

As much as I despise Farage and Tommy Robinson, I wish people would realise that saying "fuck you" to a large percentage of the country won't make them reply "Ah, now I have seen the error of my ways, I realise now that the other side is right and I will never vote Reform again."
