To ask what you thought was weird as a child (lighthearted)

What things do you remember from childhood that you thought were weird, even though they're perfectly normal to adults?

Bicycles staying upright, even though they only have two wheels.
How you stop noticing certain sensations (such as the clothes on your body) after a while: I remember pondering this aged four.
Puddles not being there the next day.

I used to think that when films etc were in black and white, it was because the world was black and white. I spent a long time wondering what the evolution from colour would be and concluded that eventually the world would be fluorescent because fluorescent crayons were just the most exciting things ever.

Plant crossing- I imagined Triffid style plants running across the road. I was probably 9ish before I understood.

Me too! I was vaguely scared of “heavy” plant crossing in particular.

That adults still have parents. All of my grandparents passed away before I was born/was too young to remember them so I assumed adults didn’t have parents. I remember a teacher (when I was around the age of 5) mentioning her parents and it blew my mind!

Oh and I also thought that when you were watching a TV programme that the people on the TV show we also watching you.

Allthesnowallthetime · 01/01/2026 22:50

Why it's "aren't I" rather than "amn't" I when we don't say "are I not". Maybe some pendants can explain!

Also, at friends' houses, adults would instruct me "say when" when pouring a drink. I thought they meant me to say the actual word "when" and didn't get it at all. Only years later did I realise that it was a shortened way of telling me to "say when to stop pouring".

I also couldn't understand why I and my sibling had to go to bed so much earlier than the adults, especially at weekends. My mum told me that she and my dad needed time together. Had no idea why they needed time without us!

Life seemed very complicated.

One I forgot about until my sister reminded me a few weeks ago, as a child I would sit and look through photo albums, of my sister & brother growing up (they were 13 & 11 years older than me) our parents etc, apparently I would sit and sob for hours, wailing "but WHY AREN'T I IN THE PICTURES" 😂🤦

Bananalanacake · 01/01/2026 22:36

On caravan holidays once a year my parents would get a meal called 'tay Ka way' I thought this was something only for adults as I never ate it, I forget what they fed me.

Burntt · 01/01/2026 22:34

i Genuinely believed my mother when she said mothers know everything. Didn’t understand why we bothered with school if I’d just know it all when I became a mother

Burntt · 01/01/2026 22:32

I used to have a lot of trouble with idioms. My poor ds is similar and got so upset when I had flu last month and said I feel like I’m dying. Another example is someone described him as yummy they could eat him up- he was terrified

scalt · 01/01/2026 22:28

@TamarindCottage i remember noticing how the moon seems to “follow” you when you move.

I thought rainbows were a weird thing that only appeared in books, until I saw a real one (and loved it).

I thought everything on the radio was being broadcast live.
I thought adults who were superstitious were silly.
I used to wonder if the universe had edges, and if it was in a shoebox under God's bed.

In amused at the moment that my granddaughter cannot fathom that her mummy was once my baby. She’s in such shock lol

When offered paracetamol after breaking my arm (I had only ever had them for headaches before), I asked "How does it know where to go?"

My daughter asked me this exact question 😂

ooherrmissus14 · 01/01/2026 22:14

I remember being very disappointed when I realised you couldn’t just drive wherever you wanted on a motorway and that you had to drive in lines (lanes). I used to think you drove just wherever there was a gap and not in any organised way. My mum and dad also used to point out the lights ‘in the distance’ which I thought was a specific place. It’s weird what sticks with you….

I wondered how people managed to save up hundreds of thousands of pounds to buy houses . No idea about mortgages .
I thought people as in They Say that where all in a sort of laboratory talking about stuff.

I still wonder that, but woth regards to a deposit ( which is probably the same now as a whole mortgage 30 years ago)

The first time I went to the beach I ran down to the sea in my new costume and a big wave came in and splashed all over me. I took my costume off and ran back to my mum. She asked why I had taken it off. I said it got wet. Much laughing all round as she explained it was supposed to.

henlake7 · 01/01/2026 21:33

I don't think I ever got my head round the clocks going back or forward. I mean I understand it now but it still seems to break my brain working it out!

When I was little I didn't understand calling my parents mum and dad. It just seemed really rude to call them by a 'job' rather then their names so I called them by their first names from the age of 5.😁

Flammable and inflammable being the same thing

TamarindCottage · 01/01/2026 20:55

Driving home at night after a day out, I asked my dad why the moon was following us. I was also baffled by the ticking noise (indicators) and had no idea where it came from or what it was 😂

justpassmethemouse · 01/01/2026 20:51

I thought that we were the only people in the car and that all the other cars were empty and driving themselves.

cheerfulaf · 01/01/2026 20:48

Penny sweets

going to the shop with my “penny”-a £1 coin and deciding to not buy one of the tiny sweets that would cost the whole penny. My mind would’ve been blown if I knew I could’ve had 100 of them

millymollyminging · 01/01/2026 20:48

How my aunt could be my dad’s sister. Or that my nan was his mum. My dad’s family was us, not some random woman!

RisingVamp · 01/01/2026 20:45

The expression “frowned upon”. I would picture everyone in a room simultaneously scowling at the offending party. Also “sent to Coventry” - I took it very literally and thought it very odd that Coventry has been chosen as a place of punishment.

MonaChopsis · 01/01/2026 20:41

I couldn't figure out where the traffic light men sat at country intersections. Obviously, in cities they were in one of the surrounding offices, looking to see which lights needed to go green next, but where they were in the countryside totally baffled me. In a similar vein, I always used to get very frustrated with traffic light men when the traffic was backed up in one particular direction. Couldn't they see they needed to let the lights stay green longer for that direction, so it would clear faster?!

Symra · 01/01/2026 19:14

When my dad would ask to borrow my pocket money for change for milk or bread on the way past the the corner shop saying he'd 'give it back'.

He always did pay me back later, but I wondered how he had it still after spending it...

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 01/01/2026 19:11

I used to be really confused at how Cliff Richard could still sing when he couldn’t talk anymore.
