Cafes should have 2 lines...

...one for people like me who want sensible drinks like a cup of tea, and one for those who want freaky complicated things requiring bizarre steampunk looking machinery that take as much as 45 minutes to prepare. Take your order for a wombat milk frappy-mocha foam with cream and splash of smugness syrup and get out my way.
2 lines. One with a sign saying "Normal" above it and one saying "Can't Understand Normal Tea Stuff" overhead.
I sometimes have a hot chocolate, but without the la-di-da stuff like cream and chocolate powder. Like John Wayne or Jesus would have had.

Omg OP, I completely agree with you and have been saying this for ages!! I don't like coffee and know nothing about it (the clue is in my username) and it's really frustrating to be stuck behind a queue of people ordering their frappa chappa mocha locha concoctions which take ages to make. Happy New Year!! Brew

TheNightingalesStarling · 31/12/2025 13:15

This is why I like the impersonal order screens in McDonald's. You can order then just wait in peace away from the counter.

There should be separate lines for people who have their money or debit card ready to pay, and those that have their wallet at the bottom of their bag and will take forever to locate it, open it, decide between cash and card etc...

And those who have to put everything back in the right compartment of their huge bag before leaving the till

cafenoirbiscuit · 31/12/2025 13:14

And at those petrol stations which have a mini supermarket attached - I just want to pay for my fuel rather than wait behind someone with 2 baskets full of groceries!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 31/12/2025 13:14

*queues

HouseWithASeaView · 31/12/2025 13:14

Yes! Also a neon flashing light above the till telling you how many drinks have been ordered on the app etc and so, whilst the queue might look short - indeed you might be the only person waiting to be served and the cafe might be pretty much empty - it will still be 15 minutes before they get to you

Parker231 · 31/12/2025 13:09

I want two lines at airport security - one for those who have listened to the instructions and have shoes and coat off, laptop out and toiletries in the right sized plastic bag and one for those who didn’t listen and hold up the line whilst they undo their shoes, find their toiletries and then try and walk through the scanner with their keys in their pockets!

I was that person the first time I went into a Subway. cringes

The staff were a bit scary and impatient, though, and I ended up with a very uninteresting tuna sub on boring bread as a result. 😄

Similar here, the server was firing what felt like very complicated questions at me in a strong accent, and I got completely confused and ended up with something very basic.

I do understand it now.

I want one for people who haven’t chosen their cake when there are only 8 choices and faff about deciding.

I want a cafe where you can see the cakes whilst queuing rather than the cakes be hidden behind the people in front who are ordering and paying. Then I'll have made my choice by the time my turn comes.

LlynTegid · 31/12/2025 13:08

You mean there is enough room in your local cafe for two queues? Where is this strange place?!!

FestiveFruitloop · 31/12/2025 13:07

Clefable · 31/12/2025 12:18

Oh a separate line at Subway for people who have never been or have come down from the Planet Zog.

’What type of bread do you have? Is there a list of toppings? Oh it’s up there. What size are the sandwiches? Oh they’re not sandwiches?’ And so on.

I was that person the first time I went into a Subway. cringes

Nannyogganny · 31/12/2025 13:07

Yes! A quick line.

I was just stuck behind a woman on a coffee shop that took 15 minutes to decide.

She couldnt decide if she wanted hot or cold coffww, what milk, if she wanted matcha or syrup

angelcake20 · 31/12/2025 13:06

Voted YABU as even a simple coffee takes forever, while I just want to pay for my Diet Coke and be done with it (and agree with whoever asked what all these “lines” are - surely we queue here).

Baital · 31/12/2025 13:04

A separate escalator for people who need to stand still for an hour and a half when they get to the top/bottom deciding on their next move. Right in the middle, without moving to the side. Meanwhile the escalator is delivering a steady stream of people who need somewhere to step as they get off...

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 31/12/2025 13:04

I married one of these people. In spite of my having the same order 99% of the time he will drop out of the queue to nip and ask me a question.

I'm just back from lunch with him after a supermarket trip.

"Hmm, olives. Should we put out olives? Maybe the nuts are enough. No, let's get extra of both to be sure. Let's go back. Is there champagne? No. Yes. Wait, let me check if there's special champagne in the Christmas aisle."

Toddler was screamingly overtired by the time we'd dealt with that AND the lunch dithering.

StopBothering · 31/12/2025 13:04

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 31/12/2025 12:14

John Wayne or Jesus - 😂

That tickled me as well.

I'm going to be nicking that line, OP. Hope you don't mind! 😂😂

MrsFaustus · 31/12/2025 13:03

….. and the old couples (I’m old myself) who have to place every item on the supermarket belt very carefully into their trolley in a specific place. It seems to take two, people longer than I do by myself. After this they look around wildly for their card or cash as if they’ve never been in a supermarket.

while I’m moaning, why is it that service in every National Trust cafe is so slow ….huge queues with people waiting for hot meals while most people were holding cold food but waiting for hot drinks.

No need for that in am Irish bar. Irish bar staff will pull the Guinness, leave it to settle and move on to the next customer, serve them, top up the first Guinness and finish serving the first customer.

I had a major culture shock when i first went to an English bar and discovered the bar staff would only serve one customer at a time!!

THIS!!! Staff don't seem to understand that they could actually do more than one thing at a time. They literally just stand there looking at something happening slowly rather than think what else they could be doing whilst waiting. Just no concept at all of "Multi tasking".

I very nearly lost it at a fast food outlet once. I only wanted a portion of chips. There was a huge stack of chips in the "heated" dispenser. Apparently everyone in front of me were waiting for drinks and/or burgers etc as literally nothing was happening. Several staff stood around behind the counter looking at the cooking area and looking at the guy on the drinks machine clearly waiting for things. I waited a while whilst people in front were being served very slowly, and eventually I got fed up and got the attention of one of them and asked if they could just get my bag of fries - she looked as if I'd asked her to sacrifice her first born and told me I'd have to wait in line! When I asked why she couldn't just pick up the fries and hand them to me, she couldn't actually explain why. It just clearly never occurred to her to serve what they could serve whilst waiting for everything else! It wasn't as if they were busy nor that by "jumping the queue" I'd make others wait longer. Anyway, the fries were going cold and soggy whilst I waited looking at them! Eventually with the usual huffing and puffing and eye rolling, she handed them to me!

I want a supermarket for people who have spatial awareness and are considerate of others, and one for everyone else.

This is probably my main criteria for choosing a supermarket (currently my local Lidl is best). Went in Tesco yesterday for a couple of things, a fiasco. Just would not use regularly. That said, some of it is down to management.

Notmyreality · 31/12/2025 13:02

Totally agree. In fact everywhere - one line for me and one for everyone else.
Perfect.

Pranksters · 31/12/2025 13:01

As an NHS worker I would like a separate line for staff so I don’t have to spend 20 minutes of my break queuing.

Oh and I drink tea, because I don’t like coffee.

Chemenger · 31/12/2025 13:00

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/12/2025 12:45

A line just for first time flyers and people with sensory impairments/other needs? With dedicated staff to guide them through the process? Sounds excellent.

Assistance is usually available for disabled people. First time flyers are otherwise able to read signs and listen to announcements.

Freda69 · 31/12/2025 13:00

Tea drinker here and totally agree- people fannying about forever with fancy coffee, while I just want a nice pot of tea (not a teabag in a mug) and a cake drive me insane. And the noise the stupid coffee machines make is deafening!

Chemenger · 31/12/2025 12:58

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 31/12/2025 12:48

Oh no, someone’s not as funny as they think they are

You might need to be more specific?

MissDoubleU · 31/12/2025 12:54

45 minutes? To make a caramel latte? Yes I do see where you’re coming from. One pump of syrup usually does add another ten minutes on.
