Cafes should have 2 lines...

...one for people like me who want sensible drinks like a cup of tea, and one for those who want freaky complicated things requiring bizarre steampunk looking machinery that take as much as 45 minutes to prepare. Take your order for a wombat milk frappy-mocha foam with cream and splash of smugness syrup and get out my way.

I sometimes have a hot chocolate, but without the la-di-da stuff like cream and chocolate powder. Like John Wayne or Jesus would have had.

And at those petrol stations which have a mini supermarket attached - I just want to pay for my fuel rather than wait behind someone with 2 baskets full of groceries!

In rural areas, those petrol stations are often the only shop for miles around and perform an essential function.

As an NHS worker I would like a separate line for staff so I don’t have to spend 20 minutes of my break queuing.

Oh and I drink tea, because I don’t like coffee.

But everyone else has to queue except a NHS worker?

Ordering a standard cup of tea in a cafe is weird and this is a hill I will die on. I can lob a teabag in a cup at home but I can’t make a fancy shmancy coffee so I’m ordering one of those! Going to the effort of going to a cafe just to have a plain cup of tea is crazy behaviour. Shouldn’t be allowed. Or only for people over the age of 80.

Grin

My 96 year ol, Great Aunt has a cappuccino! 🤗😂

DontStopMe · 31/12/2025 13:30

We have fast and slow lanes on the escalators in the London underground which work a fair amount of the time. I don't see why we can't have something similar in cafes.

millymollyminging · 31/12/2025 13:29

Can we have a cafe (yes Costa, you) that has more than one person using one machine when the queue is out the door? They have 3 machines (drive through) but only one being used for the cafe, with numerous staff wandering around. USE THE OTHER BLOODY MACHINE! Instead one guy on the till taking orders at a rate of knots as the barista faffs about, also if one order has 2 lattes heat enough milk for them both instead of heat one serving, pour, fill jug, heat then serve.

I think I will have to change cafes for the good of my blood pressure!

DrMorbius · 31/12/2025 13:29

I would like one line for people with payment ready (mainly men) and another line for the people (generally women), who when the server announces the cost, look genuinely perplexed as to what to do next. Then when they do realise payment is required, only then do they start to look through a Mary Poppins bag for a purse (which can take some considerable time).

Not sure about Jesus. Apparently he had a "special" cup, and then it would be lost for thousands of years . I dont want to be in that queue while they look for it ! .

That's some Crusade.

TheNightingalesStarling · 31/12/2025 13:15

This is why I like the impersonal order screens in McDonald's. You can order then just wait in peace away from the counter.

This. These should be everywhere. You key it in, then collect.

Scout2016 · 31/12/2025 13:26

These places that sell fancy coffees that require machines for stuff like frothed up milk need to have more machines. They are utterly ill equipped to provide what they sell but for reasons that mystify me people just accept this and wait.
If they wanted food and they only had one saucepan and had to do one meal at a time then clean the pan would they wait??? And your food goes cold while you wait for your friends...
I suppose people do wait on pancakes / crepes but you can at least see the progress underway there.

Why are we calling them lines? They're queues

Yes, and for that reason alone, the OP is being very, very unreasonable.

Justchillinhere · 31/12/2025 13:24

Couldn't you just take a travel mug with hot tea, that's what I do,

Negroany · 31/12/2025 13:24

Totally with you.

As a tea drinker I resent that my drink takes ten seconds and everyone else's take ten minutes!

Also, if I have "large", it's a slightly bigger cup and a splash more hot water, yet £1.20 more price. Bigger coffee, I get it costs more, but bigger tea (I don't have milk) doesn't!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/12/2025 13:22

😂😂
TBH that’s why I tend to avoid coffee shops, if you can actually call those caramel hazelnut pumpkin spice etc. abominations ‘coffee’, and all the sodding endless faffing to make them.

They're basically coffee flavoured knickerbocker glories aren't they.

I can forgive Subway newbies. We've all been there and it isnt clear what the process is.

They need a clear sign with instructions:
Step 1 - choose your bread from a choice of...
Step 2 - choose your size. You can have...
Step 3 - choose your filling from the following...
Step 4 - pick your salad at the counter

You'll still get confused people but hopefully less of them.

The same in central Edinburgh during August; a separate lane for locals who are just trying to go about their normal lives.

Will that include inside Edinburgh Wakerley for the local witches who comprehend the labyrinth while us non locals just try desperately to escape with our sanity intact?

Entering into the Tea debate, it is only acceptable to order it from a cafe if it comes in a tea pot.

Op - YANBU

My local Costa went though a weird spell of serving it in a tall glass, but have thankfully reverted to teapots.

Mysterian · 31/12/2025 13:20

Slow and fast lanes work with roads so it should be fine with sidewalks as well. I'm a fast walker of course.

Two pedestrian lanes on the south bank, one for tourists bumbling along and generally being oblivious and one for people running to London Bridge to catch a train.

I mean, it feels a bit extreme to just launch them into the river but needs must.

Instead of going to a cafe as in Coffee shop, maybe you should go to a Tea shop...

I went into Greggs a few weeks back for a cake. The lady in front of me ordered some frozen syrup drink thing. After 5minutes (not joking!) and still looking nowhere near done, I walked out, as did various other people behind me.

It's Greggs! If I wanted to stand in line while they made fancy drinks, I would not go to Greggs.
