Anyone else spending new year's eve on their own?

I have a toddler who will be put to bed between 7-8 and my husband works on oil rigs so he is away.

My friends are either ill with this horrible sickness bug that's going round or they are able to get out and about later as their children are older.

I'll have a glass of wine and some nice snacks while watching the telly but I feel a bit down about it for some reason.

I know this doesn't help but I think it's bananas having the 'new year' in the depths of winter. I ignore it as much as possible. March 1st would be so much more 'new' feeling.

I celebrate on 21st December, the Solstice when the year actually does turn and from then the days start getting longer. I don't understand the whole 01 January arbitrary date - celebrate when it really IS a new year!

Anyway. It's here now. I hope you all managed to enjoy yourselves, whatever you did. I went to bed early but woke up by myself at ten to twelve, and sat up while all my kids messaged in, which was lovely.

It used to be 1 April

Oh @WorkingMum1391 I can imagine if your OH is away you might feel a bit lonely.

Make yourself as comfortable as possible and enjoy your snacks, wine and viewing.

I've got a cold and haven't washed my hair so I'd rather do my snotting and endure sore throat and sinus pain in peace. Boyfriend has it too so he's at his home as well. It's only for a few hours then NYE over.

Londonrach1 · 31/12/2025 21:41

I'm not as hot dh here but I'm already in bed as it's cold outside. I've five friends on their own and we messaging on Whatsapp...they all very pleased to finally be at a age where it doesn't matter if they on their own on nye. Have a lovely nye op

BarilynBordeaux · 31/12/2025 21:40

Me! Been working all day so quite happy to come home and pass out in front of the tv. I love New Years and this year I’m feeling a bit despondent at having no one to share it with tbh, but I can chat to my lovely friends via WhatsApp.

Okiedokie123 · 31/12/2025 21:39

Me and I don’t mind a bit. :) I almost never have company in the evenings so it’s just like always for me.

I'll be at home with my dog, watching The Wire for the 3rd time. I've been invited to a house party but I have no desire to go, very happy to stay in, in my PJs.

The best series ever made!

Tomorrow life will go on as usual. Same for Christmas, thats gone too and all that prep, for what really? Just another day!

I'm not a fan of all this forced fun and prep so I ignore it and I feel no different. Life is very liberating when youre a grinch like me 😊

Its the last day of the year that's all. Shit still happens and always will.

I think.your sensible.

I think.its only when we are really young we think nye is something special.

It's 9.15pm, there have been intermittent fireworks going off since about 7pm, I can't find anything i really want to watch on TV or catchup TV so I have a feeling I will probably be in bed by 10.30 with my book.

It's as foggy as hell out there and has been most of the day so I am more than happy to not be going anywhere that would involve driving or even just opening the front door. 😆

JohnTheRevelator · 31/12/2025 17:15

Yes I am and perfectly happy about it. I gave up on going out on NYE years ago when I developed bad health problems. To my mind,it's too much like hard work! I'm quite happy staying in in the warm with some wine and nice food, and watching the fireworks on the TV.

Totally understand how you feel, wish there was a way to set up a group video chat for us all 💔

After some dinner, some games and maybe a little disco with our daughter; I’ll be sitting on the sofa watching stranger things with my exdp as we’ve separated but we’re still living together. We haven’t told any friends yet and luckily our good friends didn’t invite us over for nye drinks at theirs tonight as usual. I’m not sure I could have coped with more pretending.

edited to say: I’m not alone but feels very much like I am!

It’s normally too overpriced and busy to go out. Enjoy your cosy time and do something nice for yourself at home. HNY!

ilovesooty · 31/12/2025 16:11

Just me and the cats. I had an invitation to a party but I'm not well so I'm not going.

Genevieva · 31/12/2025 16:03

I’d rather be you then your I’ll friend. I spent last NYE in ICU thinking it was my Dad’s last few days with us. By some miracle he is still alive.

Splendidlydidy · 31/12/2025 16:01

Just me and my dog. DH died very unexpectedly just a year ago, so I’m still getting used to being on my own.

Greenwitchart · 31/12/2025 15:59

I am in my own and loving it. I spent the day doing DIY on my upper fixer, hoovering and changing the bedding. I am planning to enjoy my tidy house with my pets this evening, watch some films and enjoy a nice chocolate cake. I am neurodivergent so socialising in loud environments/ groups is just not for me.

Fontet · 31/12/2025 15:59

Sounds like heaven to me....having to go out and would much rather be at home in my jammies and my book. X

crimsonholly · 31/12/2025 15:54

Dh divorcing me but living together amicably while we sell the house. Managed a family Christmas together with adult dc but he’s spending nye with OW leaving me home alone.

LakieLady · 31/12/2025 15:45

I'll be on my own, as I have been every NYE since my DP died 5 years ago.

I'm old and so are most of my surviving friends, and the few that are left are mostly caring for their partners and/or not up to partying. Pubs are heaving at New Year, public transport here is non-existent and taxis hideously expensive and hard to come by on such a busy night.

purpleme12 · 31/12/2025 15:29

Me
My child is going to her dad's
Can't remember spending new years without her in the house
I'd prefer she was here for company...

Friendlygingercat · 31/12/2025 15:18

Im single and childfree so well used to NYE alone. I am 81 so I dont know how many more NYEs I will have as my health is not good. I dont really care. I have a friend coming to spend the early part of the evening with me. However as he does not drive and will have to walk home he will be leaving about 9 before people start going mad and throwing fireworks about. We are having a nice dinner with wine and a couple of liqueurs. If I am still awake I will ring him at midnight to wish him happy new year and we can watch the fireworks together on TV. Why go an stand iin the cold when you can get a better view at home from across the world.

TheWibble · 31/12/2025 15:17

I'm on my own too, and this will be my second NYE spent alone. I'm a single mum, but I co-parent 50/50 with my ex-husband, and it's his scheduled evening to have DD. I'm going to have a lazy evening with an easy ready meal, nice bottle of Chablis, and a bath. then I'm going to curl up on the sofa with either a film or a book.

Dolamroth · 31/12/2025 15:12

My favourite NYEs were when the kids were little and I went to bed as normal!
Now I have MiL staying and teenage dd so have to stay up and be sociable.

ravenclaworslytherin · 31/12/2025 15:11

I'm at home all day and most of the night with the three kids. My husband is on a long shift today, won't be home til the early hours. The kids are all 8 and younger so will be in bed by 8.30. think I'll curl up with a book and some snacks. Probably won't stay up til midnight as my youngest doesn't sleep through so will be up for few hours with her around 2am
