AIBU to think vacuuming is important

DH spent yesterday helping DSD to move furniture round in her room including drawers etc that haven't been moved in 3years. They didn't bother hoovering under anything while they had the chance and so hard to reach corners remain caked in dust. For context I am the only one who vacuums her room approximately once every month (she is 17 but there is no expectation that she does it herself!) I do my best but am not moving furniture around. He doesn't seem to think it's important at all. Am I unreasonable to care about this? It would have taken 5 mins and now might have to wait another few years.

I hoover/vacuum at least every other day in some areas of the house. I also hoover table tops and use my Shark to dust- i've never heard of vacuuming a MATTRESS ??! Yes I would be annoyed, but also why isn't a 17 year old cleaning her own room ? I did all my housework and paid rent, whilst working as a nursery apprentice.

I was really pleased when I saw the title of your post. Yes, vacuuming is important to me, then you spoilt it by saying hoovering! The only thing I move is the bed, but I bought an extendable noodle brush, goes to 13 ft so I can get under sofas, beds and furniture. We have 2 dogs, you need to clean underneath stuff.

Taking an opportunity to hoover beneath furniture is simply not on the thought process radar of most men and teenage girls.

DH moved the tv stand to fit new lights around it. He wouldn’t have thought to hoover behind the unit either but luckily I took the opportunity whilst I had it.

Your 17yo should be hoovering her own room more than once a month!

As an aside, why is there no expectation she vacuums herself? Or was that sarcasm?

themerchentofvenus · 28/12/2025 18:44

Ewwwww dead skin cell dust!

I'm always amazed at how many people who don't vacuum their mattresses!! It's really gross.

So YABU. Always vacuum when you move stuff round!

It would not occur to me to worry about vacuuming a room I had no reason to enter. Let her live with dust.

The room is vacuumed once a month????
Once a month??????

Why were they moving furniture? Did it end up back in different places?

Gliblet · 28/12/2025 18:40

Ohhh I hate it when people do half-arsed jobs. I'm with you, it takes no extra time at all to make the most of the furniture being out of the way and get it vacuumed.

Only2daystogo · 28/12/2025 18:39

Why can’t he pull out the furniture now or tomorrow and DD can hoover under it?
