When to take the tree and decor down?

DP and I moved in together this year and we have reached our first major disagreement. We put the decor and tree up around the start of December, earlier than he would have liked admittedly. We are done hosting for anything Christmas or New Year related. On Monday we go skiing then to his family for a few days and won't be home again until the 7th. I have work to do on the afternoon of the 7th and all day on the 8th, he is self employed so more flexible.
He believes decor shouldn't come down until after the 6th (epiphany) and we can either do it on the 7th or on the weekend after. I think as we are done hosting and won't even be here we should take them down tomorrow, do a nice deep clean and come back to a fresh home ready to enjoy the New Year. He claims that is fighting his culture and we should leave them up, he put them up early for me etc.

AIBU to want them down before we go?

I always take mine down on the last acceptable day. It's a real tree and I want the most out of it sitting there looking pretty!

Goodness, how long did it take? Mine will be removed and put away in 20 minutes, on the evening of 5 January.

Mine takes half a day

It took the whole afternoon. But that includes getting the empty boxes back out of the loft and then putting it all away in the loft as well as a full clean of the rooms afterwards. Most of our baubles are vintage glass ones so they all need individually packing. We have decorations in most rooms as well as static cling on snowflakes on the windows at the back which took a while to take off and carefully put away.
the lights outside are still up though. They won’t take long to take down.

I often take it down on new years day. But mine is actually coming down today this year. Me and husband haven't had much headspace for Christmas this year due to various reasons so both of us are ready to move on. You can take it down whenever you like but I suppose the issue is, you aren't in agreement.

Fernsrus · 28/12/2025 09:09

Mine comes down on 5th, but it wasn’t put up until the 20th, so around 2 weeks.

OneOfEachPlease · 28/12/2025 09:00

On the fifth, the eve of epiphany. I find it really weird now that social media makes everyone put their trees up in October but take them down when people are still actually celebrating Christmas.

Anyway, that’s all irrelevant! Because he’s given you a really important reason to keep it up.

itispersonal · 28/12/2025 08:56

In your situation I think you should leave them up until you get back off holiday!

Mine will be coming down on Tuesday before the new year - not religious, Christmas for me is the month of december (that’s when we do our celebrating, building up to Christmas Day and ends on Boxing Day) and not the 12 days of Christmas for me!

pilates · 28/12/2025 08:53

I’m with you op but I’m not religious. Mines coming down the day after tomorrow and a good clean.

itsthetea · 28/12/2025 08:43

Ours may come down around the 6th or may stay up a little longer but that’s what we agree

6th is traditional in the UK

in yiur case I might take them down before you travel

however you are being unreasonable to need a nice deep clean to enjoy your new year

why cant they stay up and he takes them down and cleans when you are back at work on the 7th?

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 28/12/2025 08:41

We leave ours up until mid Jan. We love the tree, No rush, it brings hoy to the darkness.

Squirrelblanket · 28/12/2025 08:39

I'm taking mine down today. I like the house to feel fresh and tidy for new year, and I'm not religious.

In your case I would leave them up as it's important to your husband.

Toastersandkettles · 28/12/2025 08:18

Ours went up 7th Dec and will come down 2nd Jan. I go back to work 3rd Jan and the DCs back to school on the 5th.
It's sad to see so many trees already down around our neighbourhood. Christmas Day is just the start of Christmas, not the end!

user1476613140 · 28/12/2025 07:38

Nothing gets taken down til after we celebrate the New Year. Nothing.

Eenameenadeeka · 28/12/2025 07:33

It's a significant and important cultural date to him, and he's already compromised for you. Your argument is just convenience. I can't see why you'd even argue, I'd let him leave it up.

DP is Italian, he says that in Italy or atleast his area very few would take them down before Epiphany which is celebrated in its own right and is a national holiday.

My friend is Italian. Tree comes down on 12th night with a celebratory dinner that evening.

XWKD · 28/12/2025 06:07

In your household, your traditions shouldn't take precedence over his.

K0OLA1D · 28/12/2025 04:27

Mine always come down before NYE. Hate having them up come Jan.

HAPPILYMARRIEDSINCE2012 · 28/12/2025 03:51

EsmeSusanOgg · 27/12/2025 23:19

Well then. It stays up until after Epiphany then. It's not an unreasonable compromise.

This

Bleachedjeans · 28/12/2025 03:46

IMO it’s not something worth arguing about. If your DP feels strongly about it, let him have his own way. What is the big deal?

chattyness · 28/12/2025 02:46

I'm taking ours down next weekend so either the 3rd or 4th of Jan. They've been up since Dec 1st and I love them. I have some special personalised decorations, that I love śo no rush to pack away.

Vound · 28/12/2025 01:27

Is it worth the battle? I would just let him win this one if it is important to him. Who would look back on their deathbed and be pleased that they ever prioritised housework over their partner's feelings?

Rather a crucial detail, omitted from your OP.
Even for many here, the Feast of the Epiphany is culturally (if not religiously) significant, but for an Italian, it’s a really big deal, with interesting folk elements interwoven with the religious one.

January 6th as a special date is clinging on by its fingernails in Ireland, where it’s long been reserved and respected as the ‘Women’s Little Christmas’, but that’s dying out now that the heavy workload for the festivities is at least half borne by men. (Or so we are told 🤣)

suki1964 · 28/12/2025 01:21

Me? Im not fussed on Christmas and its a bloody miracle if the tree goes up before christmas even, but onceits up, it stays till 12th night

its always been 12th night, no idea why, family tradition probably

I used to love getting the tree up and decorated the whole house, but then in hospitality and working what felt like 24/7 during December, it was always a job that could wait

Now taking it down 12th night , there is a stretch in the morning and evening. Small but noticeable for us early risers

SheSpeaks · 28/12/2025 01:15

I’m in full Christmas mode. There are still presents under the tree to be given out, still festivities in full swing, still meats and sprouts yet to be cooked and crackers yet to be pulled. I’ve not even opened the cheese. We have been hosting and been hosted, still have lots of hosting left to do, have nine round for lunch tomorrow and 14 for dinner, another lot of nine for dinner the day after We have panto still to go to, we’ve not opened the Christmas chocolates yet. I only put some of the decorations up on the 23rd and that’s only a few days ago.

ill be in full Christmas until the 2nd January at the earliest.

SouthLondonMum22 · 28/12/2025 01:07

Mine went down on Boxing Day. I'd happily compromise in this case though, especially if it meant him taking them down!
