People who will only have Yorkshire pudding with beef

Can I ask why? Yorkshire puddings are a nice addition to any roast meat. I’ve just never understood why you would deprive yourself of Yorkshire pudding on a roast because the meat isn’t beef, what is the reasoning? Some people seem to feel quite passionately about it.

You’re missing out on all those extra Yorkshire puddings and a good Toby Carvery - what’s not to like?

An oxymoron there, surely.

worcesterpear · 27/12/2025 18:35

Thanks @Blossomtoes, I am going to do double quantieis of yorkshire the next time I do roast beef, so I can do a pudding along these lines.

harriethoyle · 27/12/2025 18:32

I’m having them tonight with leftover parsnips and carrots, leftover dauphinois potatoes, broccoli and lashings of gravy. I can’t WAIT.

23Shadows · 27/12/2025 18:32

Gravy stealers, that's what they are. I'm not a fan.

LightDrizzle · 27/12/2025 18:30

Me! It’s me!

It’s conditioning. My grandma, my mum, and now I, only do/did them with roast beef because you use the rendered fat off the beef joint in the roasting tray. Like them, I don’t do those individual muffin type ones but a big rectangular one. In short; I’m a conservative (small C) northern bigot. My Yorkshire pudding are the dog’s bollocks too.

I can’t bring myself to do them with chicken but accept other people doing so. I’m tolerant like that.

worcesterpear · 27/12/2025 18:27

That sounds devine @Blossomtoes was it for pudding or did it go alongside roast pork?

It was as a pudding. She also did it with plums and even strawberries when they were in season. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

A good Toby Carvery?Confused
we went to one this year for the first time in several years and it wasn’t very nice. Sad

How long ago are you talking? Because I've been aware of pigs in blankets all my life and I've past the half-century

Well…I’m older than that but PiBs only seem to have become ubiquitous in the last couple of decades I’d have said vs the individual items. They’re convenient and of course require less trays but imo sausages and bacon cook better separately.

My parents were inveterate snobs and purists. I’m even worse. A Yorkshire pudding goes with roast beef.

I’m the William Hanson of our household. And our household is not a Toby carvery.

I have yorkshire puddings with all the meats. Stuffing too.

BIossomtoes · 27/12/2025 18:24

My gran used to make Yorkshire pudding with apples cooked in it. Served with a big pat of butter and topped with dark brown sugar. It was the food of the gods.

No, I thought it always used to be separate chipolata sausages and bacon (either rolled or just crisply cooked slices) until the supermarkets found a way to upsell the combination.

I'd happily have a Yorkshire pudding with a fried breakfast.
Although I am from Otley by birth, so a tad biased.

Why on earth is that not a Thing? Pancakes are…Pancakes, bacon and maple syrup are in the US, toad in the hole is Yorkshire pud and sausage … perfect fusion food brunch.

tobee · 27/12/2025 18:17

I don't understand mumsnetters who can't cope with fruit sauces to go with savoury. Apple sauce with pork, apricots with lamb etc.

dizzydizzydizzy · 27/12/2025 18:17

My DCs insist on DM's Yorkshire at every opportunity.

ImTheLyricalDanceFlap · 27/12/2025 18:15

I love Yorkshire puddings but don’t see a roast as a homogeneous meal. When I’m cooking I prefer to serve certain accompaniments with certain meats. I wouldn’t turn a Yorkshire pudding down if someone served it with a Christmas dinner but I wouldn’t cook one myself as there’s enough going on with the side dishes I cook with Christmas dinner.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 27/12/2025 17:25

Well, as your mum has passed, she will avoid my shaming, bless her

I do wonder why though - is Yorkshire associated with beef only?

God, a life of roast dinners without gravy, support girl, support 💐💐😄🥰

Then again, maybe thats how its supposed to be? I cant have a roast without it swimming in gravy 🤤🤰

The worst thing was that my mum made absolutely epic Yorkshire puddings, @mumofoneAloneandwell - and we could have had them every week, not just with roast beef.

I have tried various different recipes, including hers, and can’t replicate hers.

tobee · 27/12/2025 18:15

Why do people want them with every roast? They are lovely but I don't have to them with everything. Having them only with roast beef is fine.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/12/2025 18:14

tilypu · 27/12/2025 18:10

Yeah I know pigs in blankets. So it's basically that without the sausage? Never come across that.. Wonder if it's regional?

No, I thought it always used to be separate chipolata sausages and bacon (either rolled or just crisply cooked slices) until the supermarkets found a way to upsell the combination.

LatteLady · 27/12/2025 18:14

I like a Yourshire pud, or bags of wind as my mother would have called them, but I prefer them with beef, preferably cooked in beef dripping. Happy for others to eat them as they see fit but for me, it is akin to putting apple sauce on beef, horseradish on chicken or bread sauce on pork. I suppose it could taste nice but that is not the way that I happen to like it.

I feel like my username comes into its own here!

Mmm…. Love Yorkshire puddings….have them reheated next day with jam 🤤

Sometimes I make them specially so they can go with a bit of jam.

there are rarely left overs on the day of a roast

Parker231 · 27/12/2025 18:12

tilypu · 27/12/2025 17:15

My dad would have them with syrup.. After all it's basically pretty much the same as pancake batter!

We make huge ones and fill them with sausages and vegetables - gorgeous with loads of gravy.
