This is part of the human experience. You're getting old. It's not some big conspiracy.

How do you know I’m getting old 😅

Modern day life is too busy, too commercial and too fake and it’s affected Christmas too.

FragileIsAsFragileDoes · 26/12/2025 21:29

I am on holiday in a hot, Muslim country. I went quadbiking on xmas day. It has been the best xmas for years (and that includes ski holidays). I could quite happily never celebrate xmas again. Still got some family meets planned, but everyone happy to go for a walk, picnic or sone other activity so noone has to host. Joy!!!

MrWimbleofWombleville · 26/12/2025 21:23

It did not feel like Christmas at all for us but my mum is in advanced dementia, dad as miserable as sin because of poo mum, my DC are 20 and 17 and no longer fussed about it and this will be dd's last Christmas as a 'child' so everything felt flat and frankly quite miserable.

But there were probably many people feeling like me 10+ years ago when my DC were little and super excited about Christmas and my in-laws and my parents were all in good health and enjoying the festive days with their young GC and Christmas felt magical. I suppose that's life and how things go around.

Blinkingbother · 26/12/2025 21:19

Yep - prob most meh Xmas ever. State of the Country? Maybe the world?

whatisnext12 · 26/12/2025 21:15

I said exactly the same it has not felt like Christmas at all. I feel like I see less of Father Christmas on adverts and more of the grinch. Even in the shops, they are hardly decorated inside. I feel like this country is slowly starting to cancel christmas

It's only Boxing Day! It's not over for at least another week.

Tonight I found myself asking DP when I could take the decorations down. They only went up on Saturday, but I've had enough...

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 26/12/2025 21:04

I've been really ill for 8 days now. Some sort of virus. Haven't eaten this week or been able to get out of bed. It's horrible. I'm here with my mum on end of life care and one of my adult sons, who's been a hero. Mum has carers 4 times a day and a charity is giving night cover. It's been grim

NormasArse · 26/12/2025 21:00

Yep- it’s just a big anti climax.

Every needs to petition the businesses to not start it until at least mid November!!

fruitfly3 · 26/12/2025 20:56

i agree, though I’ve never loved it. I can’t seem to conjure the magic, even with children. I just feel the excess, mess and effort and not much of the good stuff. Also feeling completely drained today. I think if you have wonderful, close,
fun and loving family, it makes all the difference in the world (I don’t).

FunkyMonks · 26/12/2025 20:51

I would agree has not been helped by the fact we’ve all been poorly.
Last year I was more excited for Christmas than I have been this year. I think it’s been a rather shit year for this country and it just feels bleak.

WakeUpchangeChannelSleeeeeep · 26/12/2025 20:45

I am 60 and this year is the first year in my entire life that I haven't felt festive at any point at all.

I am trying to get over an orthopaedic issue that I had surgery for in the summer that may or may not have worked and I have started taking antibiotics for a chest infection that I think I have had since the Spring.

I just want to take the decorations down and be done with it all which just adds to the sadness I am feeling.

ResusciAnnie · 26/12/2025 20:41

I’ve felt like that for past christmases but not this one. Had a really nice time, good food, good pressies, good weather - cold, crisp, dry ❤️

That’s exactly what I was trying to say but you put it much more succinctly than I did!

Dollybantree · 26/12/2025 20:37

I’m of the opinion that as I get older, Christmas gets crapper and crapper bc it’s yet another period of the same old shite..and I’m bored of it. It’s the same songs, the same food, the same stress over shopping and presents, the same shite on the tv, the same watching of the same old Christmas films, the same questions being asked “what are we having for dessert”? (erm, the same desserts we’ve had for the last 20 years), the same day of clearing up/cooking all day, the same “what shall we do to fill the time for the rest of the holiday?” and then doing the same things, the same indigestion, the same hangovers etc etc

Yes, I’m sick of it all - can you tell?😂

Christmas is the definition of the word “regurgitation” IMO.

I suppose if the whole shebang didn't start in September with the Christmassy food, music, light displays, pre-xmas sales, parties, present buying, TV ads, seasonal TV films, Santa shit etc etc blah blah yada yada... (deep breath .....) then it might feel more spontaneous and fun when the actual date comes round ? Maybe?

Yep. As I said above, shops in my town started with it at the end of August. After new year is done, we get about 8 months (9 if we are lucky) before the whole Xmas shit starts again and shops are ramming it down our throats!

Imbusytodaysorry · 26/12/2025 20:29

@Eyeswithoutafacey yes I am feeling it too

gogomomo2 · 26/12/2025 20:22

It was flat due to stuff going on in our life, that happens, certainly not due to external factors or the day of the week

Winterburn · 26/12/2025 20:20

I’ve felt like this for years

VivienneDelacroix · 26/12/2025 20:19

It felt pretty much the same to me. However my daughter decided last week that Thursday isn't an acceptable day for Christmas to be on, and that Thursdays aren't "Christmassy". Maybe she had a point.

Absolutely right!
We never put Christmas tree and lights earlier than 18 December, so still feel ‘christmassy’ and festive even today, Boxing Day! My lights and tree will stay on until January 6th.

TerrierCharmer · 26/12/2025 20:16

Yes, it’s been the least Christmassy one for me so far and there’s no real reason why that should be the case. Weird!

Flyingintotheunknown · 26/12/2025 20:10

I think shops have ruined the Xmas spirit by starting to display xmassy things as early as August. I took my kids abroad mid August and everything was all summery, came back towards the end of August and all of a sudden there’s Xmas stuff on shelves and we aren’t even out of summer. I’m sick of a quarter of the year every year being all about Xmas and the build up to it. I’m sure when I was a kid, the build up didn’t start until well into December!
Then there’s people who decorate their trees as soon as Halloween is over and rip them down again in Boxing Day ready to rush on to the next thing.
Not only that we seem to see less decorations and lights in towns now and where we once saw nice xmassy lights and lots of lit up santas and Xmas trees and Merry Christmas signs, they’ve now been replaced by very bland lights that don’t even remotely look Xmassy!
