Ps thank you for the hand comments - I’ve had quite a few people say the same over the years 😅 I think I’m going to go and get an opinion on the size and if I need it resizing rather than exchanging it

here is my small .04ct plain- low-key ring. i have small-ish fingers , size j. did you buy the ring when your hands were freezing? i'd go back to jewellers and try ones with warmed up hands if you think you need a re-size.

my setting is almost full bezel as i'm a very practical person and didn't want it catching. it's also set straight on the band so my rings dont sit neatly together but i like that. my wedding ring has visible diamonds one side and set on a diagonal on the other side.

Shinyandnew1 · 27/12/2025 11:11

it does feel a bit tight on my finger and I couldn’t get it back on when I woke up!

I wouldn't say that was the right size then-I'd go back to the jewellers; it shouldn't feel too tight.

grooveraidiator · 27/12/2025 11:07

i love it - beautiful shaped band and understated. it's like mine except i have yellow gold. i do wish i'd chosen the 0.8ct ring instead of the 0.4 ct but my wedding ring is a knife-edge shaped ring with diamonds on each side. very small micro diamonds on the wedding band but i love it. congratulations and what a lovely time of year to shop for your ring!

All I’d say to people buying diamonds is to please shop ideally in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. And shop around when you’re there. You’ll get a LOT more for your money - it doesn’t have to be about size but about the quality of your stone.

Totally agree. Was going to say similar but don’t know to word it. There are so many places also in Hatton garden where you get so much more for your money.

usedtobeaylis · 27/12/2025 10:49

Oh my god she just wants some congratulations and 'I love your ring'. Can you not just give her that and move on?

Well firstly in a cost of living crisis, and right after Christmas, where a lot of people have been really struggling and worrying about whether they’ve got enough presents for their kids etc., advertising that your engagement ring cost £1200 is in very poor taste.

Secondly, if the OP just wanted to share they got engaged, there’s no need to mention money at all!!

Therefore, this = humblebrag.

And FWIW my engagement ring cost £60.

Mine cost £150 but that was more than 20 years ago - it's a 1/5 carat diamond solitaire in white gold (not unlike the OP's but mine is in a twist setting). You wouldn't get a similar ring new for that price nowadays.

An engagement ring is - or should be bought with the intention of being - a once in a lifetime purchase that you can see yourself wearing for the rest of your life.

I really don't think £1200 is an unreasonable amount to spend, or an unreasonable price to mention. There used to be a 'rule' that an engagement ring should cost about one month's salary - well, if OP's fiancé were on the minimum wage, £1200 would be less than half that amount!

The OP mentioned the price because some people were criticising the solitaire for being too small - in other words, hinting that her fiancé had skimped on the cost.

For all you know, he might have been saving for months to buy the OP a nice ring.

I do think you are being a little unreasonable,

justpassmethemouse · 27/12/2025 10:30

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 27/12/2025 08:36

Oh, come on. £1200 is not ridiculously extravagant for an engagement ring - hardly in humblebrag territory! Have you looked at the prices of gold and platinum lately? Even rings set with zirconias are going for £200 +

Assuming you meant you were together when you bought it then I assume you played a part in choosing it, therefore I assume you like it. If so, then I don't get the post?

Blueskiesandrainbows · 27/12/2025 09:49

Wouldn’t it be nice if this thread could have been minus the snarky comments, someone always has to take a dig and be unkind don’t they!
OP you sound lovely, your ring is lovely, because you chose it and it’s your choice, ignore any nasty comments.
Thank you for sharing your happy moment with us.

I am here! I just didn’t get chance to read and reply last night.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and wishes! I know it’s maybe small and simple but it’s honestly the type I’ve been wanting always. The man in the shop did say if I go home and want to change my mind we can exchange it for the larger diamond and just pay the extra (or change it altogether) but I’m sure I’ve made the right decision.

im just worried it’s too small now! How should a ring fit? I was measured in store and this ring is the size I was measured at but it does feel a bit tight on my finger and I couldn’t get it back on when I woke up! Is this normal?

I love it. It's very elegant and a solitaire is a classic design for a reason. I have little barrel sausage fingers so rings never look lovely on me.

Water retention, I was the same but give it a few months before thinking of resizing.

I don't know why you'd post it because it's irrelevant what people think. You must also be aware it's tiny in comparison to most because you said you chose it.
I didn't want a solitaire, and would look stupid with a huge stone because I have ring size i, but given the choice even I would have gone a little larger.
DH chose a Ceylon sapphire (it was the early 90s) and the side stones are small diamonds, around the same size as your solitaire. It is also 18ct yellow gold, not something many would choose today, but I love it and that's all that matters.

Surely your post is also irrelevant then, or does that only apply to others?

It's relevant to OP as she wanted to share as no friends close by as says in her post.
Also may be small (tiny to you) but OP was chosen it and likes it.

The size of your fingers does fluctuate with temperature. I always find mine are a bit bigger first thing in the morning. Not an expert but I like my rings tight enough that they don't twist round on my fingers and I'm not worried about them coming off. Depending on the style of ring, I sometimes have to push them over my knuckle.

Bloody hell. This thread has some truly unpleasant comments!
it’s not tiny at all, it’s a fair size and not flashy and overdone like a lot of people seem to prefer. It’s elegant.
god knows what people would thing of mine, it’s not even a diamond and is definitely not gold!

couldthisbe2501 · 27/12/2025 08:56

I love it OP. Nothing more minging than a grabby woman that only gets engaged because she wants a massive diamond.

See posts like this is one of the reasons why we left Britain. I didn't want my son to end up with a woman who would make drama over her engagement ring 💍 instead of being happy that she was going to spend her life with a wonderful, handsome, intelligent man who is good at cooking.

I hope that you will have a nice wedding and that your husband and his family never finds out about you posting this.

I wouldn’t want anyone to end up with your son if they’d get you as a MIL.

Be very careful with how you go about things with your opinion on his choices or you may just cost him the very happiness you want for him and end up a very sad old woman into the bargain.
