Would they go on Boxing Day and leave you home alone all day?
Just wondering if I’m being unreasonable because football bores me rigid and I can’t imagine leaving my partner of 6 years alone on Boxing Day.

😂

I could take myself shooting. I choose not to, it’s family time.

Maybe it’s a social class thing, I grew up with christmas being about family. Not sport.

Oh dear. Waitrose not open? Nowhere to go?

Home team improved and he was interested in the game again.

And? If it is such a big deal for you that he must never ever go to footie on Boxing Day, end the relationship. To be honest with you, after your snobby class comment, he is probably better off if you do, as you clearly consider yourself better bred than him.

My husband has not gone every year, any more than it would appear your partner has. Some years we have been overseas, or were visiting family. Or like this year, MIL is here and he didn't want to leave her home alone, so kids have gone without us. Some years, I have gone too, having never been to a single match before I met him. It's a great atmosphere, worth getting out of your holier than thou bubble for.

Why haven’t your family invited you to the in-laws then?

I didn't invite my children’s in-laws to my home yesterday 🤷‍♀️
They live at the other side of the country. If I was invited anywhere today, I would be invited as a couple. I would rather be on my own in my own home, than a third wheel at my child’s in-laws.

You must live in the arse end of nowhere if nothing at all is open. Maybe next year ask your dc to visit in laws on Christmas day and you on boxing day or dump the working class partner in favour of some upper class toff and hope he takes you clay pigeon shooting or something

😂

locketrocket · 26/12/2025 17:17

@HomeAloneBoxingDayhave you actually explained how you feel to your partner?

Menonut · 26/12/2025 17:17

My husband not a season ticket holder, but I’ve often bought him tickets for a big match on Boxing Day or New Year’s Day to get him and my son out of the house and get a bit of peace! 😂

Not in the countryside, I’ve been out and everywhere within 20 miles is shut.

Drive further then if you’re interested.

My thoughts too, sounds like the Op just wants to be mad at her partner for going to the football.

Harrumphhhh · 26/12/2025 17:16

I’m the one with the season ticket. I would totally go if my team was playing today. I’d have at least one DS with me though.

EwwSprouts · 26/12/2025 17:16

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 16:56

It has never been traditional in the family I grew up in.
I don’t get it at all.

Not traditional in my family either and I have zero interest in football. DH has a season ticket and always goes to Boxing Day home matches. I live with it but loathe the assumption it trumps everything. So many Boxing Days when DS was little DH never considered a family day would be nicer. We would get invitations to others' homes and I would take DS. It's also a close family member's birthday so he often missed that.

You don’t have any pubs open within a 20mile radius?

You must live very remotely then because most pubs are open today.

I live fairly rurally and all the locals are open and busy

Not in the UK they’re not. I’ve been to the gym and popped to Argos today, definitely open!

Agree, I’m semi rural and plenty of places open.

You don't have to "get" football. But you have been together (married?) For 6 years. Surely you understand the importance of this thing to him?

How about organising something for you with a friend or family member? The fixture list is available pretty early.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 26/12/2025 17:15

ExDP has one and bought one for DS. Love the fact that they go off every other Saturday during the season and on boxing day to watch

locketrocket · 26/12/2025 17:15

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:11

No I grew up believing christmas and Boxing Day was for family, not sport of any kind, country pursuits or football.

So your traditions are more important than your partners?

Ever heard of compromise?

I live in the countryside and all our local pubs are open. How unfortunate that every single one within a 20 mile radius of you is closed.

Everywhere is shut - shops, gym, pubs.

When I said 'go and do', I didn't necessarily mean go outside, I meant go and... read a book, call/text/email a friend, watch something on TV, do whatever hobby you enjoy. Surely there are plenty of things to keep you occupied within your own home?! You shouldn't need other people around to entertain you.

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:13

arethereanyleftatall · 26/12/2025 17:11

I think when people are unable to enjoy time alone, it’s puts them in such a precarious position. No freedom to leave relationships that aren’t working, very worrying for if down the line you and your partner don’t die on the exact same day.

I enjoy my own company.
I work from home, self employed.
I lived on my own happily for years.
I am happy to do my own thing 363 days per year.

Not if you live in the UK - plenty open today

I've been into town this morning shopping and the gyms are very definitely open. Mine put up a post encouraging people to come in for some freebies.

Rural SW by the way.
