Would they go on Boxing Day and leave you home alone all day?
Just wondering if I’m being unreasonable because football bores me rigid and I can’t imagine leaving my partner of 6 years alone on Boxing Day.

So, there’s nothing open, nothing to do, so you’d rather your dp just sat in all day with you, no other friends or family available . It’s been glorious where I am today, what a waste of a glorious free day.

Nothing open.
Yes I would rather my partner be here.
No, my family are all with their in-laws today…or dead.

For 363 days of the year my expectations are pretty low. But for Christmas Day the family are all together (their choice to be ‘home’, no demands from me) and Boxing Day my family go to their in-laws, but it would be nice to not be abandoned by my partner.

Abandoned 😂😂😂

So you honestly are trying to say that of the remaining 363 days of the year - none of those are family time?

No room in the car.
But it’s also a really deprived place, town centre is mostly boarded up, I’d rather be at home.

We are all gutted there is no Boxing Day football (well one match tonight.)
We have been watching AFCON.

Season ticket holders for a PL team and DH has been going since he could walk. Past years different permutations DH/sons/I have used tickets but if there is a match of course we are there!!
Feels very much a part of the festivities to us and a lovely tradition.

If you know he is going maybe next year you can plan something?
I would never want a partner who stopped me from doing something like this!!

If the sexes were reversed and you wanted to go to something you always did and he tried to stop you ppl would be screaming about controlling behaviour.

Mylovelygreendress · 26/12/2025 17:39

Do you ever see your adult DC over Christmas?

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 26/12/2025 17:39

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:32

One of my adult children parents in law have 5 kids, if they invite each child’s partner and children, plus their partners parents, they would have a stupid number of people in their house. And I have more than one adult child and they each have in-laws.

And? For some people that is normal.
My in laws were invited to my dad’s Christmas party. My DH is one of 4 and their Christmas invites always include extended family. Not everyone says yes but it’s not unheard of for extended families to socialise together.

I do love a classic “AIBU, yes you are, no I’m not” on MN.

Yes the 93% must be talking utter rot! I don't get how the OP staying at home in a gigantic strop translates as her 'compromising'!

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:38

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/12/2025 17:31

Why didn't you go with him, make a day of it. Spend the 90 minutes he was at the match shopping or in a coffee shop have a meal on the way back

Least need person I know, but 2 days per year mean family time for me.

So you honestly are trying to say that of the remaining 363 days of the year - none of those are family time?

I think you’ll find at this time of year, family is family, even Auntie Joan who is my mums dads cousins daughter third removed gets invited 😆

It’s rural ok? Miles and miles from anywhere, nowhere open, nothing to do unless you want to hike a Munro.

I assume you are in Scotland ( reference to Munro)? Pubs are open , not just in cities but in tiny villages . I have a friend who is very rural and she is currently in a pub ! Lots of shops open too .

Because apparently every single shop pub and coffee shop is shut today according to the OP

AhBiscuits · 26/12/2025 17:35

Yes I would expect him to go.
You keep saying you only ask for 2 days a year. So not birthdays? Or Easter? Or valentine's day? I don't see boxing day as being a family day particularly, it has always been traditional for sport to take place on that day.

arethereanyleftatall · 26/12/2025 17:35

Op. I’m afraid if you’re like this in real life all the time, then he’s probably just trying to escape. Hopefully, you’re not.

TidyCyan · 26/12/2025 17:34

arethereanyleftatall · 26/12/2025 17:33

Um. My mum and dad just went on a holiday with my exhusbands mum and dad. They made friends when they met, every Christmas…

My parents go on holiday with DH's parents twice a year. They bonded when we were wedding planning.

BartholemewTheCat · 26/12/2025 17:34

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:00

Maybe it’s a social class thing, I grew up with christmas being about family. Not sport.

How the fuck is it a social class thing? I’d love an explanation.

Cuwins · 26/12/2025 17:34

ilovesooty · 26/12/2025 17:27

The fixture list was available well in advance. You could have attempted to make early arrangements with your children or other family members. You just prefer to resent your partner for using his season ticket rather than staying at home to entertain you.

Exactly. Surely this didn’t come as a surprise

locketrocket · 26/12/2025 17:34

locketrocket · 26/12/2025 17:17

@HomeAloneBoxingDayhave you actually explained how you feel to your partner?

Op, you’re not helping yourself here.

It’s ok to not like what your dp does, but you’ve asked if YABU and now seem to pissed off with the response.

I’ll ask again - does dp know how you feel?

arethereanyleftatall · 26/12/2025 17:33

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:28

Cuwins · 26/12/2025 17:33

Before my DD was born I had a football season ticket and if my team were home then Boxing Day football was an absolute must. I was always disappointed when they were playing away.
My partner didn’t care at all- sometimes he would go to his parents and sometimes chill at home with his Christmas presents.
Unfortunately I can’t afford the ST now and I have to say I have really missed it at this time of year.

Why would that be strange? They’re your extended family. It’s not strange for extended families to see each other at Christmas.

I live very rural and pubs are open.
Earlier in the thread you were saying there was nothing open within a 20 mile radius. Now that’s 30.
Sounds like you just want to add to the narrative of how you’ve been abandoned on Boxing Day.

I’m also at home on my own but I’m not making a drama out of it.
