Would they go on Boxing Day and leave you home alone all day?
Just wondering if I’m being unreasonable because football bores me rigid and I can’t imagine leaving my partner of 6 years alone on Boxing Day.

Boxing Day football has been the highlight of the football calendar since time immortal.
I assume he had a ST when you met him? They are so bloody expensive now I wouldn't want to miss a single match unless my leg was hanging off.
So yes YABU, very! You're not joined at the hip

No he is a supporter when they're doing well. When we met they were not.

There is no city in England that is "an absolute scary shit hole", FFS.
You could have hitched a lift and enjoyed a nice day out, but you were determined to be a pathetic martyr talking about "abandonment".

And even if your partner had stayed home, would you have spent the whole day together making sparkling conversation? I think not.....

Also this is so snobby.

No it’s just how it was.

I had the same conversation.
He wanted to go and was expected to collect family en route.

So he is spending today with family!! You absolute hypocrite. You got to spend yesterday with your family.

But it seems to me that @HomeAloneBoxingDay this is a
conversation.

as I’ve said, my DH has a season ticket to a premier league team. I am not a football fan. I don’t like it. I facilitate any match he likes. I expect him not to go on Boxing Day. But, you know what? We’ve had this conversation like the adult partnership that we are. I don’t expect him to second guess me. He knows he gets shed loads of leyway during the season where I sort the kids so he can go to the match.

it’s ok not to like it! It’s not ok to be a martyr to the whole thing and not have an adult conversation.

Least need person I know, but 2 days per year mean family time for me.

It sounds like you need to be adding more colour to your daily life rather than trying to subtract it from your partner’s. Are you seriously suggesting you rely on these 2 days for your fill of social interaction for the year? Definitely a you problem, not a him problem.

Curious which match he has gone to see . Assuming OP is in Scotland , I am not aware of any professional matches being played today !

Partner has driven a few hours and is in England.

Beginning to get a whiff of Jackonory about this thread

6 years together and she’s only just realised he like football on Boxing Day.

Lives in the arse end of nowhere so remote literally nothing opens on Boxing Day

Sneers at people who don’t agree with her as not understanding the class issue

Can’t fit in the car with her DH

The town he goes to watch football is a God forsaken slum straight out of Shameless

Cant visit any family because there’s no room at the inn

Hmm the shark well and truly been jumped

Edited

Performance has improved and the crowd increased, he is one of them.
He had lost interest before we met.
I am in the arse end of nowhere, if I wanted a Chinese takeaway it’s almost 40 miles drive, each way.
I grew up in a family where the men were not football match goers, so to leave your family for a day on Boxing Day is very alien.
The car was full, he has a couple of hours solo drive and he collects people en route.
The city where he goes is an absolute scary shit hole.
My kids have each gone to their in-laws, they live miles away. My siblings are with their in-laws laws. One parent is dead, the other is with a sibling and their adult children and families.
Genuine.

Horrible decision which shows how little match going fans matter anymore 🙁

Agree. Or OP is one of those hard work wankers who puts a barrier in the way of every good suggestion one might make for them to better their circumstances.

Cuwins · 26/12/2025 17:49

I assumed to start with he was leaving you with young children in which case you might have an argument or had been working yesterday and this was supposed to be your Christmas Day. Without that I’m afraid your being very unreasonable

ThisCalmMauveWriter · 26/12/2025 17:48

If you had PLANNED together to do something on Boxing Day and he just grabbed his keys and shouted "bye" without warning, YANBU to be pissed off.

If he's just making the most of his season ticket and you can't complaining that you can't entertain yourself for one day, you are ridiculous. If you are in a mood when he comes back, poor guy.

Nucleus · 26/12/2025 17:47

Who has he gone with, in this full car?
Did you express a wish to go to?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/12/2025 17:46

Well having just had a quick glance through the fixtures whilst I don't know how deprived most of the areas are , I don't believe any of them are so deprived you would find nothing open and nothing at all to do , and I imagine you would have been easily able to find somewhere nice to eat on the way back. You are just being difficult

CoralOP · 26/12/2025 17:46

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:44

Where have I said that I tried to stop him?

It's pretty obvious your mood will let him know that aren't happy about him going which indirectly makes him feel awkward about going in the future. It's a sneaky way of trying to stop him.

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:13

I enjoy my own company.
I work from home, self employed.
I lived on my own happily for years.
I am happy to do my own thing 363 days per year.

Then put boxing day in your "363 days per year" of happy alone time

and do something with your partner another day

it's not that hard 😂

TheHouse · 26/12/2025 17:45

He does. He takes the kids too. Boxing Day is glorious. I sit in my house, alone, eating snacks. It’s heaven. I’m always grateful when our team is at home. It’s been a long, peaceful day 😃.

RobinStrike · 26/12/2025 17:44

You are not compromising because you are not doing it with good grace, you are in a strop. Some people love football. If it’s part of their life then if you love them then you live with it. You keep going on about just 2 days, but surely when the football can’t be moved, then your day together can? It can’t only be Boxing Day and Christmas Day that you are both off work. You sound very intolerant.

clary · 26/12/2025 17:44

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:38

No room in the car.
But it’s also a really deprived place, town centre is mostly boarded up, I’d rather be at home.

No room in the car? Why, has he taken all the family? In which case it is family time, hmm?

Also - you would rather be at home - happy days as that's where you are. Just used it (I mean going forward) to have a lovely day of what you want. I have done a few jobs, read my book, had a lovely long bath and hair mask, eaten some delicious leftovers... now going to sit with a glass and watch a film with DD.

Couldn’t you do similar? Or knit, cross stitch, bake, go for a walk, a bike ride, a run, put up some shelves, sort your screwdriver collection, plan next year’s holiday, have a snooze, paint the bedroom – I don’t know what you enjoy doing but unless he has left you alone with three screaming 2yo triplets I would have thought you have something you like to do?

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:44

MrsMitford3 · 26/12/2025 17:40

We are all gutted there is no Boxing Day football (well one match tonight.)
We have been watching AFCON.

Season ticket holders for a PL team and DH has been going since he could walk. Past years different permutations DH/sons/I have used tickets but if there is a match of course we are there!!
Feels very much a part of the festivities to us and a lovely tradition.

If you know he is going maybe next year you can plan something?
I would never want a partner who stopped me from doing something like this!!

If the sexes were reversed and you wanted to go to something you always did and he tried to stop you ppl would be screaming about controlling behaviour.

Where have I said that I tried to stop him?

My dh has been at the football. I cosied up on the sofa with the remote control, a box of chocolates and a blanket. It's been gorgeous!
