Would they go on Boxing Day and leave you home alone all day?
Just wondering if I’m being unreasonable because football bores me rigid and I can’t imagine leaving my partner of 6 years alone on Boxing Day.

I’ve loosely followed football, but never religiously like DP.
His enthusiasm for his team has become infectious over the years and if there was a match today I’d actively be encouraging him to go.

A few years ago there was a NY day match he went to and there was banter in his friend chat along the lines of “how did you get that signed off?” etc

He then sent them the photo of the 2 of us there 🤣

Two days of the year wanting to spend time together as a couple, makes me needy?

What? Do you not spend time with each other otherwise all year?!? That’s rather a drip feed.

Felt a bit sorry for you until you made this comment. Would you have the same objections if your DH was off to a fox hunt or polo?!

Yes

Everywhere around me is shut, shops, pubs, gym.
Everyone is busy with their families.

So why can't you spend time with yours if being with family is so important to them? Oh, I see you answered that. Evidently their in laws are more important on boxing day than their own families then.

So go for a walk? Stop sitting in wallowing and feeling resentful and sorry for yourself.

Not sure where you live OP because shops, pubs, restaurants etc are all open today - reduced hours but definitely plenty of places open.

Maybe it’s a social class thing, I grew up with christmas being about family. Not sport.

Christmas can be both. You don’t need to spend every single hour together to make it a family Christmas.
Christmas isn’t just two days anyway.

As for the social class comment. What exactly are you trying suggest?

cheesychipsontheoche · 26/12/2025 17:04

I’m the one with a season ticket so regularly abandon DH either with or without the children (they are also ST holders but don’t always want to come)
we have no Boxing Day match this year and it’s a bit rubbish tbh.

Christmasfree · 26/12/2025 17:03

Why dont you see family then?

Because they are all with their in-laws, or dead!

Also to add I am very disappointed there is only 1 premier league game today 😂

Edited

We both have season tickets for premier league teams and are furious there’s no Boxing Day match best day out of the season

Ooh. Shots fired. We too working-class for words, OP?

Yep - obviously none of us plebs understand because she’s significantly classier than the rest of MN

TidyCyan · 26/12/2025 17:04

Perhaps OP doesn't realise Prince William takes Prince George to watch Aston Villa.

ilovesooty · 26/12/2025 17:00

Your children are all adults. Why do you need him with you? Surely you can find something to do. The fact that you work from home isn't his problem.

Good grief, you’re really doubling down when you don’t get the sympathy you want. Social class? Sport transcends social class and brings people of all backgrounds together as a community. Except you, I don’t think you’d enjoy it at all.

Uptightmumma · 26/12/2025 17:03

Yep and I leave him! We have premier league season tickets for different teams. Only the games have been moved to tomorrow he’d have been out all day today. He’s going to tomorrow with 9year old and me and the 5 year old will stay in

TwistedWonder · 26/12/2025 17:02

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 16:56

It has never been traditional in the family I grew up in.
I don’t get it at all.

Well you’ve had 6 years to realise he sees it very differently to you do whether you get it or not, you’ve known all this time it’s a thing for him so not sure why it’s an issue now.

That’s on you OP. You sound needy. Get a job where you’re more spend time with people if it bothers you.

So going out for a football match means Christmas isn't about family?

I think you are being quite melodramatic about this.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 26/12/2025 17:01

What about Afcon?

LondonLady1980 · 26/12/2025 17:01

Boxing Day games are a big deal for football followers!

My DH and our sons are currently at the game together and I’m loving having some peace and quiet.
