Inappropriate present, hideous bookends and me in drag!!!!

I love christmas, and I love christmas presents, I got my best friend a lovely calendar showing photos that were precious to me throughout the year of all the good times we have shared, in return, and this is so strange, I got two bookends, which have obviously been handmade, but look like my face, but in a grotesque punch and judy way, I'm not sure whether they are supposed to look so scary, but they are hideous, I actually had nightmares about them last night, and on top of that, a smaller 3D figurine which is basically me looking like a drag queen in hideous blonde hair and a massive red bow, they obviously took a long time and I get that, but I wonder what they are trying to tell me, they have sent me a message asking what I think of them and I really don't know what to say, to be honest, Im quite upset they see me that way. Im just a normal person who loves christmas, I was hoping for tickets to see a christmas carol or something like that.

I thought it was the figurine she posted, not the bookends?

I’m glad your friendship has been restored. Whether people believe this is a genuine thread or not that’s on them. I think it is real and there was a lot of miscommunication and overthinking going on. OP, now that you know the gift wasn’t malicious and meant as a joke, can you please share the photo of the bookends (as you have already shared the figurine that came with them) 🙏

AzureCats · 28/12/2025 11:00

Before the update I thought you were over dramatic and ungrateful but now I just think you're a bad liar. Try harder next time.

Many thanks for the replies, all of which gave good food for thought, I should provide some background, I guess I am just a normal everyday person that got caught in a whirlwind of doubt and anxiety over this, and the replies gave a good balanced view which was actually quite helpful. To give some background, we are good friends, and we do have a history of playing practical jokes on each other, so I can see the funny side of it now, we tend to take turns over christmas with one of us buying an expensive present, and the other a cheap one on alternate years, so I should have probably explained this was my year for the cheap present, during the meal they were both laughing because I am a bit scatterbrained about money but I guess next day, sometimes everything can look glass half empty instead of half full .

No I am not Trans.

This morning I was about to throw the box out that had the bookends and I found half hidden away my ticket for the old vic, so they came down and there were hugs and all the sillyness was swept away.

It was interesting watching you all play devils advocate and all opinions were taken on board.

Thanks everyone for your contribution,

Happy New Year xx

Funny how you remember that part now.

This thread stinks.

Nifty50something · 27/12/2025 19:03

This thread is as deranged as that figurine looks (my last comment about being deranged got deleted but hopefully calling the thread deranged is ok)!

Wheresthebeach · 27/12/2025 18:07

Slow clap OP…slow clap

How has the ticket gone from £300 to £50?

About the same as the book ends becoming bookmarks

CJFJ1 · 27/12/2025 15:19

This is one of the greatest threads I've read on here. Great job, OP.

What a load of nonsense🙄 🤣

Zov · 27/12/2025 14:30

Oh, I've seen the update now. 😆

Glad you're OK @confusedgoldilocks Happy new year!

Zov · 27/12/2025 14:17

confusedgoldilocks · 26/12/2025 15:48

its really not funny, how would you like it if your best friend made bookmarks that made you look like a bug eyed witch with a slight goatee, when they had let you to believe they were gifting you christmas carol tickets at the old vic, as I said, i know i messed up with the bill but there is no need to be so personal, its downright hurtful and very cruel

Sorry @confusedgoldilocks but this is actually making me laugh. (I'm so sorry. 😆) It does look bloody hideous, but I'm sure they didn't mean to hurt your feelings. If they see this thread they will know how you feel. And they will know it's about them, because you have uploaded a photo of the item!

You can always bin the bookends in the new year. If they ask where they are in the future, just say you put them in the loft.

Reminds me of one time (bit of a different situation but similar,) DH, and I, and our 2 DC went into a little 'photo booth' in Blackpool, around the early 20002, and had a 'pencil drawn picture' of our head and shoulders. (It was computerised but presented as pencil drawn....) DH's looked like pic 1, the 2 DC looked like pic 2, and MY picture looked like pic 3 here. But I looked about 3 stone heavier with a chunky neck and a double chin. I looked like a fucking fat 60 year old woman. (And I was about 36!)

I ripped my copy up in anger at being presented as so awful! DH and the kids thought it was funny. I did laugh about it a day later, and still laugh about it now, but I was upset and angry at the time! I'm sure that you will find all this funny in a few weeks.

I never thought my life could be
Anything but catastrophe
But suddenly I begin to see
A bit of good luck for me
'Cause I got a golden ticket
I've got a golden twinkle
In my eye...

UncannyFanny · 27/12/2025 13:49

Goldilocks and the unopened bottle of cooking sherry.

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 27/12/2025 13:48

😂 at the update

And they all lived happily ever after

UncannyFanny · 27/12/2025 13:45

Oh come off it. And not one person mentioned that there were theatre tickets in the box when they all laughed at the video of you opening it? You realise we’ve all gone from not completely believing you to now knowing 100% you’re a wind up?

Grapewrath · 27/12/2025 13:28

lol this is such weird BS to make up.
As if you’d skank your friends out of covering the bill for such an expensive meal and then expect them to buy theatre tickets. If it was genuine you’d be embarrassed to post that surely

limetrees32 · 27/12/2025 13:08

And now I'm back to not believing any of this.
Oh well , more fool me !

Forthwith81 · 27/12/2025 13:01

And lo, the happy ending. 🙄

And who the hell takes it in turns where one year one party buys expensive presents and the other party buys cheap and you switch the next year?!! This has got to be one of the most bizarre things I have ever read on here 😂.

I actually quite liked that aspect of this story.
