Who got the worst gift?

Very very lighthearted. Some people are starving so no whining about not getting the perfect gift. Instead looking at it from a humoristic perspective: who got the worst gift in our family? Please add yours as well..
In our family;

  1. DH got 200 ml cologne while he wanted/needed 100 ml to bring with him on airplane (travels every week).
  2. I got fine chocolate with alcohol from uncle again (everyone has told him I do not like it but he just can't get it). He even added "I know you can't get enough of those". Not passive aggressive- that would be sinister. He really likes me and is convinced I like them.

Also got a large hand bag from DH. Not wildly expensive but still- the cords are too thin- I keep loads of stuff in my handbag. He bought it 3 months ago so can't return it.

  1. DS1 got a sort of a travel bag for mobile Phone to attach on bike from an aunt. He hasn't been riding his bike for years.

4.DS2 got a shirt of his favourite team that was so large on him it looked like a dress. Can't return it. Bil said he will grow in it😅

  1. Dh got Mil a a stylish coat size L. It was too small. Yet Mil isn't a big woman. I'm a medium and it was perfect on me but she's got bigger breasts. She wasn't happy about large being too small.. didn't say anything because very polite but it was obvious she was unhappy.
  1. Aunt got a big box of chocolate. She's on wli and barely eats anything. Def not chocolate. She discreetly passed them on to dh.

So who wins?

I have been on a long weight loss journey. 5 stone down and 2 operations for loose skin removal.
I received 3 big boxes of biscuits. 4 big boxes of chocolate truffles, 3 boxes of Thorntons chocolates, a 4 ft long box of assorted treats (chocolates, biscuits and florentines and a box of M&S chocolates.
I will probably donate them to the food bank.

5 stone is incredible. Congratulations, that is not easy ❤️

DH and I bought each other tickets to the same comedian, same date etc. Whoops. Will hopefully sell the spares 😂

Not quite the same, but we bought each other the same Christmas card. It shows we are thinking in the same way.🙂

Am I the only one who actually doesn't mind a B+H gift set? My favorites are Molton brown and liz Earle but a baylis and harding set is alright and saves me buying shower gels etc for a little while too... 😁

No. At the risk of sounding like an arse - I am wealthy. I could afford to buy only Penhaligan’s Halfeti hand wash if I wanted to (and I do occasionally to be used just by me!)- but quite honestly why would I waste the money on something that gets literally washed down the drain?

It doesn’t matter which hand wash you buy, it cleanses your hands and the smell is gone after 5 minutes. There seems to be some weird kind of snobbery around B&H on MN like “ooh, it’s SO rubbish and a sure sign you have no taste” it’s like some kind of moronic, collective Hyacinth Bucket type mentality where all the B&H mean girls gang up together to prove how none-chavvy they are.

Its weird. It’s just hand-wash guys! And some of them smell very nice and are perfectly fine to be used in the downstairs cloakroom of my £3 million pound house 🤷‍♀️ who gives a shit?

It’s really sort of wannabe-bourgeois. I find it very interesting actually 😂

Ha- I got a whole thread on that subject titled "DH and entitled brat" because he got very upset receiving this. He hadn't specified why he wanted 100 ml and it wasn't bought maliciously. Mil is generous so wanted to get him 200 ml instead of 100. Plenty of posters talked about decanting so I will try to find a nice bottle to decant.

Christ - yes, he is very very entitled to be upset about that.

A grown man sulking bc his dm bought him the wrong size aftershave? What a melt.

The 200 ml cologne for someone who flies every week wins for me. That’s pure chaos energy. Runner up is the bike phone bag for someone who doesn’t ride anymore. At least the chocolate can be re gifted and the coat might fit someone else. The cologne is just aggressively impractical.

Sorry I disagree about the cologne - I imagine that’s an easy mistake for anyone to make who a) doesn’t fly often and is ignorant of the 100ml rule or b) thinks the 200ml is much much generous/better value and that it can be easily decanted if the receiver wants to take it abroad (as surely most people don’t take all their aftershaves abroad with them?). That is one I actually don’t get the big deal about - seems very petty (unless they are genuinely not bothered and are being mock-offended!)

I got some lovely gifts this year, but it was the gifts for the kids what were questionable. My parents have a habit of jumping in before me to buy that the my children ask for.

My eldest got a tracksuit and trainers in totally the wrong size in both clothes and trainers - I was told they don't stock their size in either and as they knew they asked for this particular set they thought any size was better than nothing and they didn't have the recipts to return (in other words they saw both things in sht shop and grabbed whatever thinking that'll do) 😬 mother then fell out with me today when I went and bought the items in the correct size to fix it and cheer said child up, she suddenly found the said receipts after I had paid for the items... And called me underhanded.

Also my youngest, a baby girl, 3 months, received 5 blatantly boys outfits and the reaction to my face was "well I don't get to buy boy clothes because the entire family seems to be female, what's wrong with the clothes, girls can wear those too not just boys, you like cars and your an adult what's the difference"

As for me, I think the worst part was receiving pyjamas and clothes size 6/8 when I'm a size 12/14.

These were all off my own parents. Who see and spend time with my family several times a week.

I'm sure I'll laugh about it soon!

Your parents sounds very nasty. I wouldn’t want people like this in my life.

Sorry to keep commenting on individual posts but some on these are just awful.

A pack of 3 kitchen scrubbing sponges.

Actually feel a bit insulted, which is not like me as I usually can’t be bothered over-thinking it, but the giver sent Amazon wish lists for her and her DC to me.

That is taking the absolute piss - I hope you didn’t buy the cheeky fuckers amazon wish list?

Crystallllll · 27/12/2025 21:58

my dh got me a Lego set. I’ve never been into Lego in my life. His reasoning was it’s therapeutic and will take my mind off things!!

Dollybantree · 27/12/2025 21:57

My worse one was some pyjamas that I won’t wear because I’m very fussy about pyjamas! I only feel bad bc they’re a nice brand and won’t have been cheap - il pass them on to dd though.

Oh, and a dressing down my dm bought me in which I feel like Sybil Fawlty! Il still wear it even though it looks hideous though bc it’s comfy 😝

Taranta · 27/12/2025 21:56

I didn’t get anything at all this year. Not one thing. But rubbish gift that lives on in the memory was my late DF who when I was a teen, gave me a gift of a small triangle cut out of cardboard with six postage stamps arranged on it then wrapped in clingfilm. Bizarro.

Dollybantree · 27/12/2025 21:52

I got some old lady slippers and a super warm blanket from my DP and a few generic bits from my Amazon wish list which I mostly keep updated for the dcs to choose gifts from.
Overall he spent less than £100 on me - I'm not bothered about the amount of money he spent. However I know he's spent £450 on the other woman which I've recently discovered. He's booked a weekend away in a beautiful cottage for them both. They are going this weekend. He doesn't know that I know but he will when he gets back!!

Bloody hell - you win!

Old coffee jar containing a (used) pen and open packet of Post-it notes…it’s a memory jar apparently.

OMG- unless this is a gift from a child in which case it’s quite sweet you have to laugh at the audacity 🤣🤣🤣

A romantic weekend away in London with partner, lovely I thought, because I usually have to take charge of booking everything when we go away.

Turns out he's booked us in a 'capsule hotel'. So separate rooms, in separate areas of the building. The room itself is actually just a bed you crawl into and a shutter you pull down. Like sleeping in a self storage facility. Don't worry though, apparently he'll buy me a combination lock so I can lock myself in and feel safe...... FML

That sounds like he’s cheap and trying to save a buck. What the hell?!!

DS got 2 identical Lynx gift sets. One from us and one from MIL. He took it all in good humour as he’s 16 and actually loves the stuff. His view was well, I have plenty to keep me going for the year 🤣

That’s the spirit - my ds’s get about 4 lynx sets each and are always happy to receive them.

I can’t understand people who ungrateful for pretty innocuous gifts. Unless something has obviously been sent in passive aggressive way (or you’ve bought them a diamond necklace and received a half eaten box of chocs in return!)

And to the OP - receiving the same alcoholic chocolates every year from your uncle despite him knowing you don’t like them - he either has a very silly sense of humour (and thinks you’re in on the joke) or is doing it on purpose to annoy you. There’s no way he hasn’t got the memo if several people have specifically told him!

FluFighters · 27/12/2025 21:32

I got some lovely presents, including the perfume I really wanted.

But...my dh also bought me a small crossbody bag. A small crossbody bag with a 3D Daschund on it. I don't use handbags, I'm a backpack kind of woman.

We do have a Dachshund (also a pug, but apparently he didn't get a look in), but I've never shown any interest in Dachshund themed items. Its face is disturbing 🤣

My MIL gave our two money (lovely) and chocolates. DD got a bag of hero’s, DS (recently turned 18) got cherry liquor chocolates 😂 She used to always buy my DH these for years despite him not liking them. She stopped years ago and I had forgotten about it until I saw DS open them.

Kazzaa46 · 27/12/2025 21:16

My MIL has bought some cracking Christmas presents for me and hubby over the years.

Examples:
A cookbook titled “anyone can learn how to cook”
A sex game where you pull out little scrolls with tweezers and each scroll tells you what to do to your partner
I’ve had PJs that were 4 sizes bigger than my size and she said “I hope I’ve guessed your size right”

DH was gifted Brut soap on a rope.

Did they offer to take him for a spin in their Time Machine too?

I got a £15 gift voucher to Just Eat from my DH. I got him a £400 game console so we’re basically equal.

Immediate divorce

OneNewEagle · 27/12/2025 20:34

Btw what’s wrong with Baylis and Harding? I get some terrible gifts most years and i would be really happy with that. I get things like charity shop finds (I shop in them myself) that noone else would want and aren’t even good enough to donate to another shop.

This year my partner of 20 plus years decided he wasn’t doing gifts so I got nothing from him..but he bought the pets gifts though and wrapped them nicely and put them under the tree 😭pleased for them sad for me. I went to the toilet to sit quietly and cry. I’d have been overjoyed with a £10 toiletry set.
