Who got the worst gift?

arcticpandas · 25/12/2025 21:47

Very very lighthearted. Some people are starving so no whining about not getting the perfect gift. Instead looking at it from a humoristic perspective: who got the worst gift in our family? Please add yours as well..
In our family;

  1. DH got 200 ml cologne while he wanted/needed 100 ml to bring with him on airplane (travels every week).
  2. I got fine chocolate with alcohol from uncle again (everyone has told him I do not like it but he just can't get it). He even added "I know you can't get enough of those". Not passive aggressive- that would be sinister. He really likes me and is convinced I like them.

Also got a large hand bag from DH. Not wildly expensive but still- the cords are too thin- I keep loads of stuff in my handbag. He bought it 3 months ago so can't return it.

  1. DS1 got a sort of a travel bag for mobile Phone to attach on bike from an aunt. He hasn't been riding his bike for years.

4.DS2 got a shirt of his favourite team that was so large on him it looked like a dress. Can't return it. Bil said he will grow in it😅

  1. Dh got Mil a a stylish coat size L. It was too small. Yet Mil isn't a big woman. I'm a medium and it was perfect on me but she's got bigger breasts. She wasn't happy about large being too small.. didn't say anything because very polite but it was obvious she was unhappy.
  1. Aunt got a big box of chocolate. She's on wli and barely eats anything. Def not chocolate. She discreetly passed them on to dh.

So who wins?

Oh please can I win this thread…? My boyfriend gave me a set of smart/body composition scales for Christmas!

I was given a handmade shit-brown cosmetic bag with brown cats on it, filled with dollar-store hand-creams and body washes that I can’t use. Also gifted the same terrible book I was given last year, that I haven’t read 🙂

Come on - what’s the book? 😂

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 28/12/2025 01:59

My DS got a bath bomb. Firstly, he has severe eczema. Secondly, he’s 3. Who buys a bath bomb for a 3yr old boy? 🙄

Just go nearby for dinner,.read up on the play and pretend you went...

or just book a hotel near the venue and let you MIL look after the kids

I spent about £3k on the ‘perfect’ Christmas; trips to see Santa, decorations, food, gifts (probably more for his side than mine), organised 95% of what needed to be done, who was getting what etc etc and got him a lovely gift from our DC. I got nothing.
I also work FT and pay 90% of all household costs.
Feeling so miserable I could cry.

I’m so sorry. This is awful.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/12/2025 00:52

My Dad got three different scarves 😄

I got some lovely present - only one thing I don’t really like - some gloves that don’t fit me.

The actual gift here is the clarity to see what a fucking ridiculous relationship you are in, allowing you to get the hell out in the new year.

sgtmajormum · 28/12/2025 00:22

My mother excelled herself with her charity shop finds this year - all flamingo themed.
I got a flamingo bag (i shall use it with joy in the summer as a dog walking bag)
My DS 18 and 15 got plastic double walled flamingo themed pint glasses
Totally wacky, but i'd rather her crazy gifts than the generic TEN boxes of shit chocolate selection boxes i got. Love chocolate but despise selection boxes. No thought whatsoever

What was the pathetic specimens excuse?

Catdaddy1978 · 28/12/2025 00:06

Not this year but 14 years ago my then partner decided to get me what he thought was a great gift. A bath mat, an old record of a song I’d never heard of (and didn’t like), and a thong that was far far far too big. Like a 5XL. Everything except the bath mat went in the bin soon after we split about six months later but I still use the bath mat under the cat box as my cats are messy little chaps and have a tendency to pee out of the box onto the floor.

So ungrateful OP! I hope one day I am in the position to be moaning about such gifts!

Oh ffs. She did say lighthearted! Catch yourself on.

A bottle of Sainsbury’s Prosecco, a joint gift for me and my husband. Neither of us like wine and we don’t drink often anyway and the friend who gave it to us knows this. She usually gives really thoughtful gifts, I actually looked in the empty bottle bag to see if there was something else in there. Feel like we’ve somehow upset her.

Another friend gave me a Dove gift set which includes a Dove reed diffuser. I don’t like the smell of anything Dove so will donate it to a food bank.

More likely she’s been stressed and busy and forgot to get you a present so grabbed a bottle last minute from her own supply - I know I’ve done this too many times to mention.

If she’s a good friend don’t overthink this ❤️

Could you get your DH a perfume atomiser as a bonus present? I don't own one, so maybe check with someone who does, but I think he could refill it from his cologne and it would be a lot smaller so maybe more convenient for flights?

Surely he uses eau d' toilette when he is at home. He can keep the 200ml one for then. Maybe get the smaller one for his birthday. You can't have too much perfume .

sumayyah · 27/12/2025 23:41

I bought my own present, a dress........ some how ive ordered the wrong size

I think I might be winning so far.

My husband and I are on the verge of burnout. My MIL bought us tickets to stressful and intense play an hours drive away and has promised to babysit. They don’t live locally.

This means I have to clean out my guest room which is currently used for storage for them to stay. Host them the day & the evening until we leave, she never stops talking and gets up at 5am so I’ll have my four year-old running around at 5am after we’ve driven back after 11 pm from the miserable play we don’t want to see.

I have no idea why she’s bought them. The tickets are expensive and nonrefundable.

Just go nearby for dinner,.read up on the play and pretend you went...

@TheatricalLife Thank you. I appreciate that. It’s been a journey

mellicauli · 27/12/2025 23:30

My Mum used to get us monumentally shit gifts. Poor DS (15) got a homework planner with pink unicorns on it last year. Other DS (20) got a lime green and shiny grey laptop bag. And she really made us work for her work - obscure and expensive stuff which then she'd probably never use.

I kind of missed it now she's gone. It gave us something to laugh about.

my dh got me a Lego set. I’ve never been into Lego in my life. His reasoning was it’s therapeutic and will take my mind off things!!

This has reminded me of a gift DH gave me a few years ago - a wooden model kit of a steam engine. The kind that requires you to pop out fiddly bits of wood from a template, use tweezers to hold them and super glue altogether. He said similar about taking my mind off things!

I had a newborn and a toddler at the time. The eldest is 10 now and I honestly still do not have the time, patience or space to commit to this activity.

Sixoclocksomewheredahling · 27/12/2025 23:06

A 30 year old book on aromatherapy, complete with dried out samples, mildew and ancient sellotape from MIL.

To be fair the whole thing was DP's fault - he was getting his Mum's decorations out of her loft and noticed the book had been dripped on by condensation and bought it down to ask her if he should chuck it away. He got distracted and left it on the table with some proper pressies he'd bought round for her to wrap up ( she doesn't do computers so he handles buying the internetty bits for her ) and she seems to have assumed it was something l'd asked for!

DS and I both bought each other a CD. Both thinking the car had a CD player. It doesn't. We have nothing to play them on and both have Spotify anyway .... the fact we both did it is bizarre.

Edited

This made me giggle.

We have one car with a cd player and one without. Thr one with is driven by me more than DH, so I have my selection of cds in there.

I got some lovely presents, including the perfume I really wanted.

But...my dh also bought me a small crossbody bag. A small crossbody bag with a 3D Daschund on it. I don't use handbags, I'm a backpack kind of woman.

We do have a Dachshund (also a pug, but apparently he didn't get a look in), but I've never shown any interest in Dachshund themed items. Its face is disturbing 🤣

This is giving me Roland the Rat vibes! 🤣

I got a £15 gift voucher to Just Eat from my DH. I got him a £400 game console so we’re basically equal.

Return it? Mention the fact that he was so mean every time he uses the console? Get a takeaway with the voucher and don't share it, eat it in front of him while he has spaghetti hoops or similar 🤣. And most definitely take out the money to repay yourself from the join account. And get him a tin of soup next year if he's not under the patio by then.
What a man child! I'm so sorry.
