People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

Irish and never had it.

I’ve no idea what bread sauce is or what it’s made from.

The words bread sauce don’t sound very appealing however. 30’s east anglia.

Im originally from Lancashire and had heard of it but we never had it growing up. DP is from London and its always been an integral part of Xmas dinner and I always make it now and love it.

Barneysmomma · 25/12/2025 17:03

Always had it growing up in Yorkshire but DH not keen (Scouser) so don't usually have it. Fancied some today with roast chicken but packets out of date (>2yrs!) so missing out. I know I can make it from scratch but no white bread in the house. Sad now...

Someone who said it's a generational thing, I'm 32 🤣

Well my 27 year old daughter was happily blitzing loaves of Lidl bread in the food processor yesterday and helping me infuse milk

AhBiscuits · 25/12/2025 17:01

I've only heard of it because DH insists on it. It's gross.

ResusciAnnie · 25/12/2025 17:00

I’m from Somerset and yes, had bread sauce every Christmas of my life. Obvs!

Tacocat2 · 25/12/2025 17:00

I know what it is, but it’s pretty pointless! We were making Dinner this year so didn’t bother. My mum always makes it though.

Porkpieandmustard · 25/12/2025 16:59

Love bread sauce. We had it with our chicken today. I’m from London, DH from SE, my parents (who used to serve it with Christmas dinner) are Welsh.

intrepidpanda · 25/12/2025 16:58

I've heard of it but never tasted it.

I’m in Scotland and I am aware of it but I haven’t tried it and I don’t know anyone who has it with their Christmas dinner.

I think it's a working class thing

😂

EverardDeTroyes · 25/12/2025 16:56

I would never make Christmas dinner without it. I used to make it a lot with roast chicken too but haven't done that for years now. From the south west.

butterdish93 · 25/12/2025 16:56

Love it. The stuff in packets is bland. Gotta be home made with plenty of nutmeg or cloves.

JudgeBread · 25/12/2025 16:55

Welsh, heard of it but don't know anyone who still has it, it's minging

ilovesooty · 25/12/2025 16:55

I love bread sauce. I like it on sausages and cold in chicken sandwiches.

Lunde · 25/12/2025 16:55

Love bread sauce

I live in Sweden and we made 2½ litres of bread sauce yesterday from scratch

Pollqueen · 25/12/2025 16:55

MyRoseRaven · 25/12/2025 16:50

We have it here in Ireland but it's not very common. Gravy would be more ususal.

It's not either or. You have bread sauce and gravy. Food of the Gods, love bread sauce

RaraRachael · 25/12/2025 16:54

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 25/12/2025 16:52

Heard of it but never eaten it - just the thought is off putting

Elbowpatch · 25/12/2025 16:52

I thought it was a normal accompaniment to roast chicken and turkey.

Hiptothisjive · 25/12/2025 16:51

I’m a foreigner so we didn’t have it in NA but in-laws do it and I thought I died and went to heaven. Delicious.
