@PeonyPatch Do you parboil the cauliflower? I can’t work out how long to do it for so it doesn’t go mushy…

@Dancingsquirrels. Me and DH are fans of one big tray of Yorkshire. I do a whole Ikea roasting tray of it! See Exhibit A, attached. This was my trial run last week. The teens prefer individual ones so that’s what we had on Christmas day… No idea why they prefer individual or why I let them decide what we had either!

Yes just boil them for a bit, not fully… as they’ll cook further while in the oven. I actually put mine in the microwave from frozen for about 3 mins. They were al dente and then I poured the rue on top and put in oven!

@Dancingsquirrels I’ve not woken up properly yet but I am confused re the freezing and defrosting. Do you make the batter and freeze it or make the actual Yorkshires and freeze them?

The freezers are full right now but I could reconsider my freezer priorities if it means I can make the Yorkshires and freeze them!

Apologies for thread hijacking and to those not invested in Yorkshires.

I cook YP, freeze them, defrost, reheat

Or, make YP day before the big meal and reheat without freezing

I like to prepare them in advance, as they just occasionally aren't so good, and I find that unpredictability stressful!

Plates absolutely overflowing with food you could eat any day of the week. I don't think any of it looks enticing at all.

I’m sure your festive low-calorie cracker was absolutely delicious.

How does everyone produce these lovely looking homemade Yorkshire puddings? I don't even bother trying any more to make mine,I just buy the frozen ones. My homemade ones were always a dead loss. I might add that I'm a pretty good cook in all other respects,I just haven't mastered the art of the Yorkshire pudding!

Another vote for Mary Berry recipe. And you need hot fat. And don't open the door while they're cooking. You can freeze them, defrost and reheat for 4 mins. I make a batch in advance

I sometimes make one giant YP in a roasting tin, which has the added bonus that it's quicker to pour in the batter in a oner

@PeonyPatchexcellent cauli / cheese ratios there. I can’t get mine anywhere near the m and S pre made stuff so I just buy it. Spent months in lockdown working on it to no avail! Any tips?

where do you feel you’re going wrong?
What kind of dish have you used? I used a small glass Tupperware - loaded it up with cauliflower and then used the bbc good food recipe and poured the rue all over the cauliflower before putting it in the oven. It did need more than 20 mins tho to get a nice gratin on top. I didn’t have breadcrumbs so I topped with crispy onions.

Totally agree. Plus the other miserable twot further up thread.

That said, I couldn’t be doing with PEAS on my Christmas dinner. That’s just wrong to me!

See, this was out Boxing Day roast to be fair. I absolutely love peas, and I love them on a roast - especially when soaked in lots of gravy, yummy yummy yummy!

ChristmasLightsLover I think that not leaving the batter in the fridge overnight is where I've been going wrong! I will certainly give this recipe a try.

mondaytosunday · 26/12/2025 23:16

@RessicaJabbitit’s half a sweet potato! My son had the other half.

@JohnTheRevelator I use Lakeland deep muffin tins, and follow all the instructions here. From what I can tell, it’s mostly about leaving the batter in the fridge overnight and getting the fat really hot before you add the batter.

I crank up the oven to 270 so it drops to 240 when I open the door and pour the batter into the tins. 13 to 15 mins and they’re done. I also get the batter out a couple of hours beforehand so it’s not quite as cold and only add the water in just before pouring.

I double this recipe and get 12 huge individual Yorkshires. My teen and DH are seriously impressed with them. As am I !!

P.S. My cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, etc is all shop bought. And the gravy is Jamie Oliver get ahead stuff that I freeze. I decided to go for it with Yorkshires and not try to do it all…

The Best Yorkshire Pudding Recipe

The secret to the ultimate Yorkshire pudding is making the batter in advance. The result is Yorkshire pudding that rises tall, is tender and lightly chewy.

This was mine (before gravy!) mostly frozen stuff as we are carers to our DD and time isn’t on our side, but always try to tart it up a bit (extra butter, herbs, seasoning or whatever) We had a load of frozen chicken that needed using so slow cooked it in sage butter and tasted fine once all mixed in!

Why do you have to be such a complete arsehole on a nice, Christmassy thread...miserable fucker

Nah not at all miserable thanks. I was completely bladdered to be fair. I own my shit though so I apologise for my post!

Buzyizzy217 · 26/12/2025 18:21

At my DS, it was lovely, but I don’t eat stuffing or sprouts, so I didn’t really get a lot. Yorkie was home made and good. 😁

The turkey is a bit buried. That white stuff is bread sauce (could have been more liquid). Best roasties ever though. Not a very delicate plate but dinner was two hours later than planned and just wanted the stuff on my plate!

What's the brown thing at 10 o'clock... Looks like a jacket potato?

The Mary Berry recipe in a nonstick muffin tin yields perfect results every time.
