Sick of people saying Xmas is ruined over some trivial thing

Merry Christmas everyone

Past couple of days I have seen people saying Xmas is ruined by trivial things. Such as no Xmas crackers, the turkey they ordered is smaller than planned.

Your Christmas isn’t ruined,

Christmas being ruined is when your home is flooded, had house burglary, house on fire. Being made unnecessary homeless. NOT when something trivial such as above.

Those who say Christmas is ruined because they have no Xmas crackers. You have a roof over your head, other food.

Forget the lack of crackers, smaller turkey etc and enjoy Christmas.

The irony of you posting a moany thread on Christmas Day of all days about people moaning about Christmas being ruined! Honestly, most of those threads about missing food items etc are lighthearted and should be taken as such. Maybe log off Mumsnet and have a eggnog or something to lift your Xmas spirits?! 🎄🎄🎄🎄

This!

Last Thursday I found out my cancer has returned to both my lungs and abdomen. I’m determined to have my best Christmas ever.

Same here! I found out a month ago my cancer treatment wasnt working so had to start a new one.
Spent all of yesterday in the chemo unit so nothing will spoil today.

TheChosenTwo · 25/12/2025 08:57

Sorry to read this @Berlinlover - I really hope you have have the best Christmas yet.

So happy to be pagan and not have all the hassle of this, some nice food and drink for the winter solstice and the 22nd then it's finished for another year.
No big build up, no pressure, no presents, endless tat to dispose of, done it for years and 100% love it.

I think anyone complaining about trivia should be made to watch the episode of The Good Life when Margot cancels Christmas because the tree that is delivered from Harrods isn't the correct height!!!!

I was just going to mention that episode!!

”Christmas hasn’t been delivered!”

I've had a couple of years when I was younger with younger children where I wanted everything to be perfect and I would have a meltdown at some point. However, it wasn't over the most mundane thing, it was because I lost my dad when I was 24 and tried too damn hard to make christmas perfect for my 2 boys that I tried to suppress the anger and pain. It didn't work. My boys are 19 and 12 now and still with my OH who stuck by me through thick and thin. For the last few years I've 'given up' on perfection and done it our way.
We've had a really tough time this year and unfortunately still going through it. But I'm not going to let it ruin everything. Perfection is overrated.

scalt · 25/12/2025 08:20

“Christmas is ruined” reminds me of Five Go Adventuring Again, when George is sulking because their tutor does not like dogs, and the others are pleading with her “don’t let’s spoil Christmas”.

My Christmas is ruined because nobody laughed at my funny reply on another thread. (Oh wait, they can’t, the laugh reaction has gone. Sad )

Agree that the word “ruined” is overused in general.

If Christmas hinges on cracker availability and poultry dimensions, it was probably always going to be a stressful day.

I suspect some people would feel Christmas was “ruined” even if everything went to plan — they’d just find something else to unravel over. The daughter didn’t look grateful enough, the husband thanked his mum, the brother wore the wrong socks…

JingleMyBellsChristmasSmells · 25/12/2025 08:05

I voted yabu, aren't most people being sarcastic?
I forgot yorkshire puds yesterday doing the big Christmas shop so I messaged one of my guests arriving later today and asked if they could bring some because 'I had ruined Christmas' by forgetting them.
Obviously I was joking! I didn't expect 9 people to start sobbing over yorkshire puds (there may have been mutiny from the children!) but it is just a flippant statement.

Damnloginpopup · 25/12/2025 08:02

My girls are home. My mum is not doing the dinner. My partner has brought me coffee in bed. My dad got home from major surgery two days ago. I've prepped everything ready to go and I have free electric until 4...

Couldn't be better here 😀

Heyhelga · 25/12/2025 08:02

A lot of people are more highly strung and emotive these days generally in life. You see it all over social media how much stress, hate, bitterness, selfishness and jealousy people have inside them.

Cerezo · 25/12/2025 07:47

This thread has ruined my Christmas

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 25/12/2025 07:45

I love the 'Asda ruined my Christmas' articles because of rotten turkeys or online orders having missing items 🙈

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/12/2025 07:44

I don't think social media helps these days. It seems there is so much pressure for everything to be perfect.
A lot of people then put enormous amounts of time and money into trying to achieve that perfection. Often on top of demanding jobs and the usual things in daily life.
Christmas activities often start from early December so the build up is huge.

I think for some, all of that leads to a sort of pressure cooker and it only takes one small thing for them to feel it's ruined.

We always have a nice time at Christmas but are relaxes about it. We don't do lots of the extra activities such as breakfast with santa etc.
Nice, sensible amount of gifts and food.
Christmas films etc. It's lovely but not over hyped tobrhe

Meadowfinch · 25/12/2025 07:41

I agree. All this angst about gifts. Being given something you wouldn't have chosen yourself, or something you didn't ask for or something that cost less than someone else's present, or that is Chinese tat and now they have the chore of taking it to the charity shop. Or is Fred's present good enough? Will it be rejected.

Honestly, what a load of fuss about nothing. Someone bought a gift. It involves no great thought at all. The appropriate response is to smile, say thank you, stop worrying and eat another mince pie. 🙄
