Socially acceptable Christmas alcohol but weed is not ok?

Just that I find it mad that alcohol is socially acceptable especially at Christmas, around kids, morning or middle of the day, all day, all normal. Despite it being a poison, a personality changer, a catalyst for fights, memory loss etc. There’s never been a study to support its use medicinally, with the exception of red wine in moderation.

But it’s not socially acceptable to get a little high on weed? Which does have many studies demonstrating its efficacy in treating a whole host of problems.

It’s mad IMO.

I think that its the smell 😄

Its awful and discriminatory that the smell is associated with classlessness tbh

Someone doing a line or a brownie would be more acceptable, maybe bake brownies (😉) instead??

Doing a line? Cocaine has secondary effects too. It makes you into a massive cunt if you're around people not on it.

Neither is okay in my book. A small drink around kids, fine, but no-one should be overindulging in front of kids. Smoking anything around children is also bad, and I wouldn't want to encourage children to think weed is a good idea, because for so many people it really, really isn't.

I don't drink and dislike the effect alcohol has on other people. I also hate smoking of any kind. But, starting this afternoon, I will enhance my Christmas with some light, homemade cannabis edibles, which will have no adverse effect on anyone.

I hope your edibles are lovely. It takes a while for the effects to hit when eating so go steady. Trouble with edibles is they give you the munchies and then you eat more and then is goodnight for a damn fine sleep.

I haven’t smoked in over a decade, and have serious air filters in every room so the vape doesn’t linger. It’s a much nicer smell than dogs, and I have one of those too.

Sounds perfect, I may well join you! Grin

Alcohol does smell. It stinks, and people who have been drinking smell too.

JamesClyman · 24/12/2025 13:33

The smell of booze does not linger the way the stench of weed does. YABU.

Because you can't get passively drunk?

Also, rightly or wrongly I would say a lot of people associate daytime smoking with the underclass so hardly aspirational.

ETA that obviously there's drinking and then there's drinking

MissMay95 · 24/12/2025 13:30

Alcohol is legal but shouldn't be. How many deaths per year are alcohol related? I know 2 people killed by drunk drivers also. It's vile. People who condone it and make excuses for it, tell me everything I need to know about that person 🤷‍♀️

One is legal and doesn’t smell. The other isn’t.

This.

Plus of course in lots of houses alcohol at 9am or whenever also isn't socially acceptable and neither is any drinking to excess.

tigger1001 · 24/12/2025 13:29

It's the smell I hate. It can be so strong.

and you say not socially acceptable- the smell is everywhere, so it very much suggests it is commonplace.

MissMay95 · 24/12/2025 13:28

I agree about the alcohol, i despise it and it's so normalised it's mad.

Been teetotal since I was 19, it's vile and everything about it is negative. Can't understand why people love it so much.

I thought cannabis (the CBD oil from the plant) was only beneficial to health when eaten and not smoked?

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 24/12/2025 13:28

Weed smells bloody awful and lingers on clothes, hair, furniture. Totally anti-social to inflict that on others.

TeenageSu1cideDontDoit · 24/12/2025 13:27

Weed stinks and is dangerous for other people. Would you smoke a ciggie around kids?
