Xmas day in PJs?

Ultravox · 24/12/2025 11:13

I read it on here quite a lot that people spend all of Xmas day in PJs. Each to their own and all that but I just can’t imagine it…I guess I could imagine it more if we got a takeaway for dinner but just can’t imagine cooking & eating a Xmas dinner in PJs! So am I in a minority? Is it normal?

I was thinking of wearing some dressier PJs tomorrow but I just can’t imagine cooking Christmas dinner in them so I decided against it.

vanillalattes · 24/12/2025 14:37

It's just as normal as dressing up, or wearing normal clothes, or putting on jeans and a Christmas jumper.

We take the dog for a walk on Christmas morning so no PJ's here but I'll be wearing leggings and a jumper as comfort is more important to me than anything else.

I wouldn't do it, but to me 'pj's' means traditional style pyjamas that you slept in. Not sure why anyone woukd have a shower and put night clothes back on but each to their own I guess.

Even in care homes they get the residents in clothes. I'd only wear night clothes during the day if I was actually ill in bed but it seems people enjoy it.

I won’t be wearing the traditional ‘go to bed in’ pj’s. There are other types which feel special and glamorous.

dudsville · 24/12/2025 14:25

Your post reads as a criticism op, being unable to imagine something you don't do but that others do. Fwiw, if it helps you to picture the scene, our plans just came to a halt a few hours ago. It's a beautiful day here, so we went for a walk. Just got back, it's just DH and me, and I've showered and put on a great pair of pyjamas. We're about to tuck in to the great lunch that DH made, and we're going to eat it on the sofa, whilst watching something festive, and I'll be curled up under one of my Nan's quilts.

Yes, it’s normal to wear pyjamas. It’s also normal to dress up in your best clothes. It’s also normal to wear cosy jumpers or any other clothes.

What’s not normal is the amount of time, energy and sheer strength of feeling that half of Mumsnet seems to devote to when/where/how other people wear their fucking pyjamas. I swear to god there’s about three threads a week about pyjama habits and they’re always full of people getting really cross about the pyjamas of total strangers. It is mental that anyone gives a shit about this.

I wear a jeans-and-a-nice-top combo on Christmas Day but frankly, other people can spend the day dressed in pyjamas, wearing full evening dress or eating your dinner stark bollock naked for all I care; it doesn’t matter.

You are giving it a lot of energy here PP..

I don't think it's 'normal' as in what most people do, but it's not very unusual either, judging by these threads every year.

I had never heard of it pre MN, and do find it bizarre - where is the sparkle etc - but it is the rich tapestry of life innit.

PersephonePomegranate · 24/12/2025 14:15

I'm not really a wearing PJs around the house person, but lots of other people are! Just because it's not your thing, doesn't make it unusual.

FoxLoxInSox · 24/12/2025 14:13

I find the idea of being in invalid clothes weird and skin-itchingly incongruous on the most special day of the year. I wouldn’t go to any other special occasion (wedding, baptism) in “cosy clean PJ’’s” so why would I want to celebrate Christmas dressed like that. Yuck.

AuntiePushpa · 24/12/2025 11:25

Sounds cosy if they're fresh pj's. Slobbing around not having had a shower tho - I hope that's not what people mean

This 👆🏼

allthingsinmoderation · 24/12/2025 14:11

Of course its normal!
People wear whatever they please.
Ill be wearing pjs ,it just a small family Christmas though and the pjs are silk with marabou trim (not for everyone but heigh ho)

I am not sure why feeling bed bound would make it enjoyable for me. Might as well put on a silk skirt and a top, be dressed and able to open the door, not just spend the day thinking it's bed time.

nightwear is too baggy and loose to feel comfortable during the day , but I don't even like being bra-less - and I have got small boobs!

I don’t wear pj’s for bed but tomorrow’s pj’s will be a luxurious outfit . They are hanging up ready to wear. I won’t need to open the door (other than for the dog to have a quick wee in the snow) as all our visitors are arriving today other than DT’s whose flights arrived yesterday.

FoxLoxInSox · 24/12/2025 14:10

As a family we’ve always dressed up for Christmas Day. Women and girls with new dresses, sometimes heels, men with chinos or shit trousers, nice crisp jewel-coloured shirts, smart shoes. Both sexes wear their more expensive fragrances or ones they got for Christmas.

We’re not generally a dressy fussy family but Christmas Day is just always automatically the day we make an effort. Nice make up, done hair properly. Then paper hat on top to wreck it all 😹

SillyNavyTiger · 24/12/2025 14:01

Parker231 · 24/12/2025 13:49

Why wouldn’t you feel nice after a shower and put on new silk pj’s? (I never wear makeup up so not relevant and hair is always a wild and curly look!)

Ineedanewsofa · 24/12/2025 13:52

I’m taking from this that a lot of people have very warm houses, I’d be freezing wearing just PJs around the house in December!

Parker231 · 24/12/2025 13:49

Cherrytree86 · 24/12/2025 13:47

Nope, shower, do hair, do makeup, get dressed here

I want to look and feel nice

It’s not something I would do ,but if that’s what other people want to do then I certainly wouldn’t judge anyone.
Maybe if I owned some stylish pjs then I’d might contemplate wearing them during the day.

littlemissalwaystired · 24/12/2025 13:40

I’m 39 weeks pregnant. You can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be just putting on clean pjs tomorrow😂

Parker231 · 24/12/2025 13:39

Bayleaf30 · 24/12/2025 13:34

If you’re making the effort to get showered, changed, presumably put underwear on, then put PJs on I don’t get why you wouldn’t just get dressed in normal lounge clothes. That way you can also go outside when needed.

I’d be too cold sitting around in PJs anyway. All power to you though if it works for you.

We wear pj’s on Christmas Day because it’s fun. Other than letting the dog out, we’re staying at home all day. It’s minus something horrible and snowing, the furnace is on so everyone will be warm. Back out on Boxing Day for skiing so a day inside isn’t going to hurt anyone.

PermanentTemporary · 24/12/2025 13:38

Urgh. No.

WaitingfortheThingtoHappen · 24/12/2025 13:37

I don't know anyone in real life who wears nightwear during the day on any day of the year.

If I visited someone on Christmas Day, or they came to me wearing nightwear of any kind, I would assume they were unwell. It's just not normal for the people I know.

It would seem from reading this thread that there are some people for whom wearing normal daytime clothing is uncomfortable or "not fun".

I have never met any of those people, but if not getting properly dressed is the best way to enjoy their day, then that's what they should do.

mondaytosunday · 24/12/2025 13:35

Yes, I’ve put so much effort into decorating the house, setting a lovely table, cooking the food (actually my DD is in charge of that this year) and using our special china that it would feel weird rocking up to the table in my, admittedly pretty ragged, pjs! As we aren’t having guests casual is fine, but out of respect for the occasion we will be showered and dressed. The morning in pjs is fine (my late hubby would get dressed and I felt it was almost a tradition to open presents in pjs)!

I hate wearing pj's in the day, any day.

Also giggling at the thought of my family sitting around in pj's. It just wouldnt work for us.
