DH going to the gym on Christmas Day!

For about 1.5 hours mid morning. A couple of his mates usually go and have roped him in.

He is into his fitness but surely people can give it a miss for one bloody day?!

OP posts:

I can understand you POV OP but I don't think its a bad thing for him to exercise on Christmas day at all.
Sometimes people being stuck in a house all day isn't a great thing especially when it's big day like Christmas Day and can sometimes make people feel trapped, fresh air or exercise can make you feel so much better about yourself. We normally go for a walk so I think they gym or a run is pretty similar to that. I'm going to be in my exercise class tomorrow, it helps keep the anxiety down and helps me regulate myself. I will strongly be encouraging my 14hyr old he needs to go to the gym tomorrow and my daughter will be riding her horse at some point.

IsItSnowing · 23/12/2025 08:54

I don't get the problem. It's 1.5 hour out of a whole day.
I'd rather have a healthy DH than one sitting at home eating chocolate and drinking too much all day.
I admire his dedication to be honest. We'll be out getting our 10k steps in before we head out for lunch although I will skip the gym on Xmas day.

winterwarmer8274 · 23/12/2025 08:47

My gym is a coded gym and will be open Christmas Day - and I will be going! I went last year too and it was busy.

I will go in the morning after opening presents when not much else is going on (I am not cooking, but I will help with the clean up after).

Isittimeformynapyet · 23/12/2025 02:10

No, you go to a gym and it is closed Christmas day.

I remember an identical thread last year with page after page of people arguing about whether gyms are open or closed on Christmas day.

The fact is, some are and some aren't. It's really that simple.

All of The Gym Group gyms are closed on Christmas Day. I believe PureGym are too. I was responding to a PP who said the 2 biggest chains (The Gym Group and Pure Gym) are open 24/7. They usually are, but not at Christmas. They are closed so the people who provide remote supervision during periods where individual sites are unstaffed don't have to work. I didn't say ALL gyms are closed, I corrected a previous post that implied the 2 main chains in the UK would all be open, allowing their many members to access the gym.

GlomOfNit · 23/12/2025 08:44

I don't see it as any different from the amiable nutters who like to dash into the sea on Christmas Day, often with friends, so I think this is a tiny bit unreasonable, OP Smile unless you have really young kids you need help with, or a child with SEN who will be awkward, etc. I'd treat it as an hour and a half's peace and quiet, put the children in front of the Christmas tv offerings/new toys and enjoy it! Calm down?
I think you missed out the " dear".

How patronising.

I could have chosen my words better alright ..

I’m sure OPS husband’s friends are not more important to him than her On Christmas Day though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Namechange546 · 23/12/2025 08:39

I usually go out for an hour (longer if my in-laws are staying with us!) on Christmas morning. I meet up with friends for a dog walk but really it's a stroll round the local park with bucks fizz/bailey hot chocolates in our flasks while the dogs entertain each other.

We go in the lull after breakfast when the kids are playing with their toys or crashed on the sofa after the morning adrenaline rush. It's my Christmas as well and the walk is something I really look forward to.

I think, unless the OP comes back to say her DH does nothing to help prep or organise the rest of Christmas day, there's nothing wrong with him taking a short time out on the day. Especially since he has said it's something he wants to do in advance so you can plan the timings of the day around it together.

BuckChuckets · 23/12/2025 08:21

Both my BIL and my dad had 'I just have to pop here on Christmas morning' excuses (not the gym), and both of them were covers for seeing OW. I'm not saying OP's DH is cheating, but just saying it's not necessarily a ridiculous suggestion.

BringBackCatsEyes · 23/12/2025 08:20

I usually go for a run on Christmas day if we're at home.
Get up, stockings, run, get on with rest of day.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 23/12/2025 08:18

@Wifetobe21 hasnt really answered much on the thread so it’s hard to say who is being unreasonable. Did he do this pre baby? Then it’s pretty much a routine.

Does he disappear to the gym regularly and does @Wifetobe21 get get own down time?

Does he actually spend time with baby and do his fair share around th house?

Does the op feel he is trying to get out of xmas day stuff/spending time with her family/preparing the food etc, is that all left to her or will he be cooking/sharing the loa ?

Lots of people are active. No one needs to be at the gym every day (rest days!) and more research is showing we don’t need excessive amounts of exercise all the time. However i feel better when ive moved so i can understand why people do it. Is this more a catch up with mates?

mrsconradfisher · 23/12/2025 08:16

My DH and 2 teen boys are playing golf (only 9 holes) on Christmas morning!

borntobequiet · 23/12/2025 08:10

Barney16 · 22/12/2025 22:29

I wish my gym was open on Xmas day.

This.

yomellamoHelly · 23/12/2025 07:55

My issue would be that afterwards he would want a leisurely bath / shower and then a sleep to recover.......

Willyoujust · 23/12/2025 07:50

I find this really strange that he would want to leave his family and young daughter to be with his friends at the gym on Christmas Day?! I would be upset that he’s even considering it.

scaredysquiggle · 23/12/2025 07:49

I will be exercising Xmas day. Great not to be squeezing it in on a work day. Better than sitting and eating chocolate.

fatcat2007 · 23/12/2025 07:47

I’m going to Christmas Day parkrun. I have two kids. Before that was a thing I used to go horse riding or walking. It wouldn’t be healthy for my marriage if my husband tried to say we had to spend the day in the house with no exercise. You build your Christmas traditions around what you enjoy.

Tooobvious · 23/12/2025 07:44

Arlanymor · 22/12/2025 22:15

If it doesn't have any responsibilities that aren't in direct conflict with a gym session, why shouldn't he enjoy a fitness session on his bank holiday? It's only for an hour and a bit. I know people who go sea swimming in Penarth on Christmas Day morning because it will set them up for the rest of the day. Also isn't there an annual Serpentine Race in London? It's a bank holiday, a day to do what you enjoy.

The things you mention are special events (note the word "annual"). Going to the gym, just as you do every other day, is not a special event.

Simonjt · 23/12/2025 07:43

wouldnotswapwithyou · 23/12/2025 00:00

Then it’s just like any other day.

A strong family unit wouldn’t even think about being away from each other on Christmas Day.

I could imagine a park run working or something similar, as the spouse and DC could go and cheer the runner on and make it a fun family event.

A strong family unit wouldn’t think anything of one person being outside of the home for 90 minutes. A family going through difficulity or one finding it hard to be a unit however may feel threatened unless they are all
together.

2021x · 23/12/2025 07:42

Torn on this one OP.

There are some incredibly defensive people on here about going to the gym at christmas but none have them have said that they have a toddler. I also assume that the decsision to do their exercise was pre-planned where is this is off the cuff.

Yes I think he can miss the gym for one day without it being a disaster. If he was just going for a run then I would be less bothered for some reason, but actually going to workout like its a normal day is a bit different. I think its the choice to spend it with this mates (who I presume he spends a lot of time with when working out) that is the thing that irks me a little.

Simonjt · 23/12/2025 07:40

Our gym is 24/7, so I’ll be going on chrismtas day, just as I went on the first and last day of hanukkah and I’ll be going throughout shaheedi week.

MyBrightPeer · 23/12/2025 07:33

This is such a non issue. Lots of people exercise on Christmas Day. Your child doesn’t know what Christmas is at 19 months and you also have your parents around. Make sure he is contributing later and you also get that time back to do something you want to do but it’s not like he’s taking an entire day to do something else. He’s not having an affair, he’s going to the gym with some mates.

AgnesX · 23/12/2025 07:32

Wifetobe21 · 22/12/2025 22:27

1DD age 19 months. My parents will be here too so not just me left with DD

So, it gives you an opportunity to have them to yourself. That bit would be nice.

Presumably this is his excuse to dip out of any prep?

Pollyanna87 · 23/12/2025 07:18

I feel sorry for the staff who work in the gym.

It has been stated countless times on this thread that most of the gyms open on Christmas day are not staffed. Members let themselves in with a code.

Lemonyyy · 23/12/2025 07:28

My dad always ran on Christmas Day - still does in fact. He was always back to help mum with dinner and my childhood Christmases definitely weren’t ruined. I think you’ll be fine op, just make sure you get a break too!

Simonjt · 23/12/2025 07:24

Zov · 22/12/2025 22:54

Yeah, I do agree actually. It's a bit of a shitty thing to do unless he has cleared it with his wife/the mother of his child that it's OK. (As I said, I would have been OK with him getting out of the way for a bit.)

As you say, no woman would do this. She would be slated and berated by her husband's family if the shoe was on the other foot.

Only if her husbands family were raging sexists.
